United Arab Emirates fast facts Fast facts Fast facts Official name United Arab Emirates (UAE). Religion Islam is the official religion of the UAE. Form of government Federation. There are specific powers given to the federal government, National flag The UAE flag includes the four Pan-Arab colours, red, green, white and black. with others reserved for the Emirates. Green represents fertility, white represents neutrality, black, the petroleum resources, and red was the colour used in the flags of the emirates before unification. National emblem Area 83,600 square kilometres (km). Economy Since oil was discovered in the 1980s the UAE has gone from being an incredibly poor region, to being one of great wealth. Major rivers There are no permanent rivers in the deserts that make up the UAE. The lack of fresh water is made up for by desalination plants that make salt water drinkable. Man made structure Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, at over 828m. It has more than 160 stories. Natural events There are frequent dust and sandstorms in the UAE.
