A bachelor, Mr Khattar joined RSS as a full-time Pracharak in 1980. After 14 years of service to the Sangh, he was moved to BJP and placed at the helm as party general secretary in Haryana in 1994. He was made chairman of the BJP's campaign committee for Haryana in the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 when the party won seven out of the 10 seats. The first-time-MLA-first- time-chief minister enjoys close proximity to the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi. Besides sharing RSS back- ground, Mr Khattar worked closely with Mr Modi who kicked off his Haryana campaign for the Assem- bly polls from Karnal, the seat chosen for the new leader. It was in 1996 that Mr Khattar started work- ing with Mr Modi, who was then in charge of Haryana. In the aftermath of the Bhuj earthquake, Mr Khattar was called upon to manage the elections in Ku- tch district of Gujarat by Mr Modi and the BJP secured three out of six seats. The BJP stormed to power in Haryana winning the state for the first time alone since it was formed in 1966. The party that had never won more than five seats contesting on its own has a tally of 47 in the 90-member House. The Modi wave has crumbled the bastions of Congress, which was in power for the last 10 years. BJP's vote share rocketed to 33.2 per cent from a meagre 9.05 per cent in the last Assembly polls in 2009, bringing a dramatic victory for the saffron party. It had been earlier playing second fiddle to the regional parties in Haryana, including INLD that has now finished second. CELEBRATING BJP'S VICTORY The BJP workers and supporters painted the state red with their joy and enthusiasm. They broke out into a dance at the thumping beats of dhols to express their happiness. HARYANA REVIEW OCT - NOV 2014 COVER STORY 13 It was celebration time at the Haryana BJP headquarters when the election results were announced. Par- ty workers as well as supporters, who had started assembling at the state party office celebrated Holi as well as Diwali together as the pro-BJP elec- tion results poured in. They danced to “dhol” beats, applied “gulaal” on one another and distributed sweets to celebrate the party’s victory. Some enthusiastic youngsters also burst crackers to mark the occasion. The winning candidates, mem- bers, workers and supporters of the saffron party took out victory processions in their respective con- stituencies to celebrate their victory and express gratitude to the electors. People came out in large numbers to greet their newly elected leaders and extend their best wishes. Enthusias- tic supporters and children wearing Narendra Modi masks could be seen at the processions. VICTORY PROCESSIONS FOLLOW While BJP leader Capt Abhimanyu lead a victory procession in Hisar, Manish Grover, the winning BJP candidate from Rohtak, thanked the residents and accepted their greetings as his supporters showered flower petals on the onlookers. Krishan Lal in Israna For the first time, the Panchkula constituency witnessed a surge of saffron when Gian Chand Gupta of the BJP was elected to the Haryana Assembly by a huge margin of 44,602 votes. Ecstatic after his victory, Gupta said that he would fulfill all his prom- ises. “I will make Panchkula a smart city, and will build better educational institutes, including a university. Modi leher chha gayi,” he smiled, as he left for the victory procession. While it was a moment of jubila- tion and ecstasy for the winners, it was that of dejection and low spirits for the ones who lost the election. Accepting defeat, the former Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who though managed to win from his constituency Garhi Sampla in Rohtak, said he hoped the BJP continue the momentum of growth of his 10-year regime. “It is democracy. Last time, the people of the state gave us their mandate, and this time to the BJP.” g Giving the joy an exit through drum beats
