This month, Jason L. shares his story of perseverance: Jason was recently hired by Bay Ridge Security and works as a Licensed Security Guard in the guard booth of a gated community. Jason’s path to employment was a rather rocky one—After his long-term position at a community center was eliminated due to the impact of Covid-19, Jason remained unemployed for over a year. However, he did not let his struggles define him and instead dedicated this time to enhancing his work readiness skills, actively searching for, and applying for jobs, and following-up with employers regularly. Jason’s support team stood by his side. After landing his new job, Jason is now adapting to his new role with the support of a Job Coach. According to Jason, work allows him to meet new people and “keeps him busy and out of trouble.” Work also keeps Jason financially stable and fosters a sense of belonging. Jason lives independently in a condo of his own and enjoys any opportunity to socialize while earning money. He has an unmatched level of motivation and sustained optimism, taking every chance to increase his skillset to be a better worker. He is working to renew his Security Guard license and is considering coverage at other complexes with the company to expand his employment options. The Employment Connection Vocational Services Program at UCP-LI is proud of Jason’s accomplishments and the support he receives in his dream job. He is truly living a Life Without Limits! Advocacy
Geraldo Rivera's Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace 50th Anniversary Fifty years ago, ABC investigative reporter Geraldo Rivera responded to a call from doctors and social workers at the Willowbrook State School to report on the appalling conditions under which its residents lived. Rivera and his crew captured footage in that clandestine visit to the School that became the explosive and honest exposé, "Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace." In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the original broadcast and as part of the 2022 Year of Willowbrook at the College of Staten Island/ CUNY, the Willowbrook Legacy Project presented an evening of reflection and discussion with Geraldo Rivera on Wednesday, February 16 from 6-7 p.m.. Additional information about this event can be found here, and the full 2021 Annual Willowbrook lecture can be view here. Winner of the SANYS Board of Directors Elections - Joe Dorr Joe is involved in many activities here at UCP of Long Island. Most recently, Joe was involved in making molding for hallway displays as a part of the Graphic Design group. He was very excited about campaigning for the SANYS Board of Directors. Lets give him a round of applause! Meet the Family Meet Alex and Claudia, Alex was born with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and is microcephalic. Additionally, Alex has cortical blindness and is non-verbal; he
requires constant support in all areas of his daily life. When Alex was a toddler Claudia’s determined search for services brought her to The Children’s Center at UCP of Long Island. “We walked into The Children’s Center and Alex’s face lit up. I knew we were in the right place.” When Alex was 12, he moved into a UCP Children’s Residence—a milestone in both of their lives. Soon Alex will turn 21 and graduate from The Children’s Center. Claudia plans for Alex to transition to a UCP Adult Residence and struggles with the emotions of a parent watching as their child enters the next phase of life. Thankfully, UCP will be right beside them as Claudia and Alex embrace the next chapter. The Children’s Center at UCP of Long Island has been a life-enhancing resource for children with disabilities and their families for more than 60 years. We ensure parents like Claudia are not alone, and that Alex and his peers receive the best possible opportunities to learn and grow. But we can’t do it alone. We give thanks for you. Leroy! UCP-LI is proud of the many programs and services offered to children and adults with disabilities. Our in house art program "Brushstrokes" was originally introduced many years ago to help stretch our participants muscles. It opened a world of creativity for our participants and became a full-blown art program which features many very talented artists with varying disabilities. Their artwork has been featured at art exhibits and pieces are also sold at UCP-LI's Special Events. Art can take on many forms, paintings, poetry, writing, music etc. Quarterly one artist within the program is selected to be the "Featured Artist". The featured artist is selected by votes received from their program peers. This quarter we are celebrating Leroy! Leroy is a member of our "Brushstrokes" art program and creates many amazing paintings. Leroy enjoys painting abstract art but is most well known for his animal paintings.
