The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Unit was established in January 2018. Some of the key responsibilities of the EDI Unit are to: • Lead on the development and delivery of the EDI strategy across UCC, working with the University senior leadership team and wider partners in support of the University Strategic Plan. • Lead and oversee the University’s Athena SWAN award and other national initiatives and provide effective management and support of various University committees and groups. • Support staff to demonstrate their commitment to EDI. • Raise awareness amongst all staff to fulfill their responsibilities to comply with UCC’s regulations, policies and procedures. The EDI Unit is happy to advise students and staff on equality-related issues. We are a city within a city. People come to UCC from a huge variety of backgrounds and experiences, mirroring the modern society in the historic community around us. Support for diversity and equality is more than just a good idea. Diversity nurtures the fertile fields in which great ideas grow. Diversity of background, of thought, of approach, and of action together promote a robust and sustainable society. The richness of life experiences and differences that all of you bring to our community help make us make us stronger and better individually and collectively. At UCC, we are dedicated to promoting diversity and to building welcome, culturally-inclusive, equality-driven communities within and around the university. We must all be ambassadors who spread the word about the importance of diversity and equality inside and outside UCC. Our UCC Diversity Calendar highlights our equality and diversity related events and opportunities throughout the academic year. Professor Patrick G. O’Shea President University College Cork About this Calendar UCC Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Unit created this calendar to highlight a variety of religious, civil and University dates and events. The ‘Significant Dates’ section of each month highlights specific internationally recognised religious and civil events. A call was put out to UCC students and staff to name these significant dates. Please note that certain religious events are subject to the lunar calendar, and that this calendar can only offer an approximate indication of when these events will happen. Unfortunately we do not have space to provide details on each event, but we hope that they will raise conversations about diversity, and about local flexibility for staff and students observing events of religious significance in particular. The lower middle section of each month highlights both UCC events and Irish events specifically relating to the Equal Status grounds. Month-long global events are noted here also. Note that certain equality-related events may be subject to change, and that certain dates were not available at the time of going to print. Finally, the left hand column of each month highlights particular UCC initiatives and related themes that support the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda. Photo credits include: Tomás Tyner, Emmet Curtin, Clare Keogh, Sebastian Knuettel, John Sheehan, Wavebreak Media and The Glucksman, UCC. We welcome suggestions for improvements to the calendar in future years.
