Course Calendar from 03/02/2020 to 03/12/2020 Art Courses - Restricted 20ART01: Watercolour - Beginners Type: Long Course Dates: 11/02/2020 - 24/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Tue 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Jan Oliver Excludes school holidays. This is an introductory tutored class for those who have not used watercolour before or would like a revision. Various techniques will be introduced to develop skills in mixing and using paint, using different brushes, papers and tools, including plastic Yupo, salt, masking fluid, pen and wash, and charcoal so students can produce landscapes, still life and flower paintings, while avoiding 'mud' or boredom. We have lots of fun in a supportive environment. A list of materials is available from the U3AM website (www.u3amornington.com.au/courses/course- resources/). Members with no internet access can collect a copy from the U3AM office. 20ART02: Watercolour - Intermed Type: Long Course Dates: 12/02/2020 - 25/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Wed 14:15 - 16:15 Location: Currawong Hall Tutor: Jan Oliver Excludes school holidays. Members must have completed Watercolour for Beginners in past 3 years or attended another Art Course so you can apply basic techniques, mix colours and have appropriate watercolour equipment to build on techniques and methods used previously. Includes outside painting. Course covers abstract, landscape, cartoons and experimental use of different papers, canvas and boards with watercolour paints, pencils, charcoal and pen and includes some acrylic and multimedia work. NB All members will be waitlisted for this class 20ART03: Watercolour Advanced Type: Short Course Dates: 12/02/2020 - 16/09/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Wed 11:30 - 13:30 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Margaret Thompson Excludes school holidays. This class is not suitable for beginners but students who have studied watercolour in other classes are welcome to join. Now is the time to take all those wonderful skills and techniques you have learned in Watercolour Intermediate and make them work for you. Watercolour Advanced is a shared learning environment where we will be taking the time to practise and explore our own creativity using our intermediate set of skills. Bring relevant materials. We will also be experimenting with different mediums in a bid to enhance your learning experience. As Picasso said 'Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist.' This class is all about taking chances, pushing yourself into the next level through exploration.You will expect to share your skills and be part of an art team, working with a monthly theme and then having a 'Showcase' each month so artists can explain their processes and learn from each other. 20 20ART04: Mixed Media Self Help Type: Long Course Dates: 14/02/2020 - 27/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Fri 10:30 - 12:45 Location: Currawong Hall Tutor: Maryanne MacPhee Includes school holidays. This course provides great interaction between artists using any medium except oils. No tuition but lots of help and encouragement is given if wanted. 20ART05: Oil Painting & Mixed Media Type: Long Course Dates: 13/02/2020 - 26/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Thu 9:30 - 12:00 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Bruce Brunsdon Includes school holidays. Oh, so you would love to be able to draw but think you can't? I have heard that so often, but I know that all it takes is for you to want to do it. We meet as a group of learners and have fun seeing how well we can learn to try: life drawing, natural forms (flowers, trees, etc.), perspective, composition - and with a group of lovely people! Requirements: A4 spiral bound book , (good cartridge paper), Stanley knife, Ruler, Eraser, Pencils- 2H,H,F,HB,B,2B,4B,6B. 16 20ART07: Drawing Practice - SELF HELP Type: Long Course Dates: 12/02/2020 - 25/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Wed 9:00 - 11:00 Location: Meeting Room 1&2 - Stables Tutor: Jude Burrows Excludes school holidays. This self-help course provides space and time for participants to develop drawing skills through practice. It is open to any member who wishes to improve their current drawing skills and learn in a non-tutored, supportive and shared environment. 20ART08: Drawing Wildlife-Beg & Intermediate Type: Short Course Dates: 10/02/2020 - 22/06/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Mon 11:30 - 13:30 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Allison Roche Excludes school holidays. Bring your passion for wildlife and art to this course and uncover your unique style. You will learn drawing techniques to perfect your placement, angles, tone and colour. Suitable for beginners and for students continuing on from the last 2 semesters who have previously completed Term 1 & 2. Term 1 - pencil work Term 2 - pastels. This is a self help class with no tutor. It is not suitable for beginners. If you have some experience with watercolour painting and would like to paint with like minded people, you are welcome to join. Bring your own equipment and materials. Food courses 20COOK01: Fabulous Foodies Type: Long Course Dates: 04/03/2020 - 04/11/2020 Frequency: Monthly, Wed 10:00 - 12:00 Location: Berts Shed Ballanrong 58 Roberts Rd South Mornington Tutor: Anne Bould Includes school holidays. 1st Wednesday of each month. This is a course for men and women who appreciate interesting and good food. This is a self-help group facilitated by Anne & Myra. The idea is to draw on the group's own experiences and involves sharing information on different foods and cooking techniques, sampling food, and sharing recipes. NB: Not meeting at Bert's in July, August or November. Some weeks we hope to be visiting other food related venues. The first meeting will be a get-to-know-you session and a planning session.Bring along ideas of what you would like to discuss and learn about and food places you would like to visit. It's all about sharing our foodie obsessions. The course will be held at Bert's shed, which is located at 'Ballanrong', 58 Roberts Road South, Mornington. For map of location check website: https://www.u3amornington.org.au/berts-shed/ 20 Craft courses 20CRF01: Currawong Crafties Type: Long Course Dates: 14/02/2020 - 27/11/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Fri 13:00 - 16:00 Location: Currawong Hall Tutor: Jeannie Bridger Exludes school holidays. Currawong Crafties is a group where the skill levels range from Beginner to Advanced. This group is not only for sewing, it is also open to all kinds of crafts, i.e. knitting, crocheting, card-making, beading, anything really! We are a group of creative people who gather together on Friday afternoons to enjoy each other's company and work on our individual projects. Our group works on a Skills Share basis where we are happy to share our craft knowledge or answer questions where we can. 20CRF02: Sculpture in Clay - Beginners & Inte Type: Short Course Dates: 11/02/2020 - 24/03/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Tue 9:00 - 11:00 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Antoinette Bonnici-Carey Sculpture in Clay - Hand Building. This course will cater for beginners and those with some experience. Beginners will create functional objects using techniques including: Pinch, Coil and Slab methods. More experienced students will develop their own projects with assistance from the tutor. All students will need to pay a levy, to cover the cost of clay, kiln firing, paints & glazes. We estimate that beginners will pay a levy of $45 per term and intermediate students $90 per term. The cost differentiation is based upon the amount of materials, power costs (firing) utilised by the respective groups. The tutor will explain the levy in detail at your first session. Equipment required: Plastic Container - large enough to hold your clay so it will not dry out - large Chux Superwipe, apron, plastic container to hold slip, plastic container to hold water, and a hand towel. Course Calendar from 03/02/2020 to 03/12/2020 20CRF03: Mixed media, Texture in Art and Collage Type: Short Course Dates: 20/04/2020 - 22/06/2020 Frequency: Weekly Course, Mon 9:00 - 11:00 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Cathryn Hart Excludes school holidays Create works of art using texture from materials found in nature and by recycling or re-using any materials you can imagine. Collage uses the same material in a different way. When making a piece using texture, the artist often paints over the texture pieces to make landscape or example, whereas collage uses the same materials to make the picture without the use of paint. The tutor will provide examples of the differences at the first class. Large bottle of PVA glue Thick paper 300 gsm Mont Martre water colour paper (both readily and inexpensively available) Masking tape wide and thin (not coloured) An artist board (2 would be good but not essential) Paint brushes, Acrylic paints. Come and join our small group where you can socialise, have a cuppa and learn the very basics to get you started on your knitting journey. We will learn how to cast on stitches, how to read a pattern, how to fix mistakes, some easy and fun stitches for a little wow factor, plus casting off and finishing. And bonus, you will love learning how to create your own simple but stunning lacy scarf just in time for the wintry weather! BYO size 5mm needles, some 8-ply yarn and notebook and pen. U3A supplies tea, coffee and milk, but please BYO mug. Or water bottle. 20CRF05: Puppet making Type: Short Course Dates: 15/04/2020 - 27/05/2020 Frequency: Dates as specified, Wed 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Art Room - Stables Tutor: Veronika Rae Classes will be held on weeks 2 & 4: 15/4, 29/4, 13/5, 27/5 Puppet making utilising recycled materials (plastic, cardboard, fabric etc). Hand puppets, marionettes and glove puppets. Great fun! Make them for your grandchildren. I will teach you the names of the stitches and how to do them all. Our aim will be to crochet a GRANNY SQUARE•, the kind that can be made into blankets. I will also teach participants how to read a simple pattern. Equipment required: A number 5 crochet hook, 2-4 balls of 8 ply yarn in different contrasting colours. A diverse collection of illustrated History Presentations. Immerse yourself in ideas and opportunities to see our past world in new ways through this carefully chosen series of widely different presentations. This course is designed for people who want to increase their understanding of matters of national and international significance. Participants will be expected to undertake some preliminary research/reading for themselves for the topic under discussion. This course is suitable for people who enjoy thinking, discussing and understanding the world in which we live. As a guide to leading a discussion, five key ideas/dot points should be regarded as a minimum. Discussion should be based on logic, facts and analysis. N.B. For those interested in discussing various matters that affect Australia, our way of life, culture and values. These include local, national and international developments and the impact of the new. TED Talks is a series of TV talks spreading ideas usually in the form of short, concise and powerful messages. Topics can include environment, social issues, life, science, health or, whatever the class decides. There are a huge number of topics available; many of them with a humorous look at the subject matter. Each episode lasts approx. 10 mins and will be followed by discussion. 20DISH05: Armchair Travel Type: Long Course Dates: 27/02/2020 - 26/11/2020 Frequency: Monthly, Thu 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Portable Classroom Tutor: Jill Condie Includes school holidays. 4th Thursday of each month. Armchair Travel provides an opportunity for you to travel to countries and share experiences in a relaxed environment - without costs and security checks! In 2019 we visited Portugal, Malta & Israel, toured Vietnam & Cambodia, went to the Kimberley region and Kakadu and then spent a winter in Finland and Sweden. There are other exciting destinations as we share travel experiences in varied locations. The program for 2020 will be advised in February and we hope it will prove interesting and include somewhere on your bucket list. 20DISH06: Mad as Hell - SELF HELP Type: None Dates: 03/03/2020 - 06/10/2020 Frequency: Monthly, Tue 14:00 - 16:00 Location: Portable Classroom Tutor: Maurice Johns Includes school holidays. 1st Tuesday of each month So what do you really think about the world you inhabit in 2020? How do you consider our Federal Government is addressing the major issues we face as a community? Are you "Mad as Hell" or a "Quiet Australian"? Come and argue your point of view, agree, disagree, or sit back and just observe. There are no rules....just come and express yourself.
