OVERVIEW This tour introduces you to a rich textile heritage as it follows a route through the some of the country’s most exotic destinations. In the blue haven of Chefchaouen, visit an NGO where artisans create cloth for traditional robes, known as Jelaba and Kashaba. In Fes, famous for brocades, experience how artisans create highly detailed and textured lampa cloth on a hand-operated pull-out loom. In Marrakech, visit the Musée Berbère to see Yves Saint Laurent’s collection of North African textiles. Additional textile highlights include demonstrations of rug making and wool dyeing, a tour of a dyeing district, hands-on embroidery and natural dyeing workshops, and practice making a needle-woven cherry button--those delightful small buttons found on garments throughout the region. TOUR HIGHLIGHTS MOROCCAN ART & CRAFTS The colorful handicrafts of Morocco include a wealth of textile goods, from embroidery work to wool blankets, from leather bags to slippers. Alongside these soft goods are creations made from clay, wood, and metal, all of which display the country's multicultural heritage. CHEFCHAOUEN This city washed in shades of blue provides an enchanting visual, but tourists also delight in shopping for handicrafts, including wool garments and blankets, and in catching glimpses of artisans at work through open doorways. FES The medieval city of Fes is an architectural treasure trove. Ancient tombs, breathtaking mosques, and impressive palaces and riads are found throughout the city. A major tourist draw is the tanning industry, which has been active since the city's founding. MARRAKECH Founded in 1070, Marrakech is a tourist destination of note. Its old town area is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also boasts the largest market, or souk, in Morocco, where offered goods range from rugs to crafts. DETAILED ITINERARY Included meals are shown with the symbols B, L, and D. TOUR START & FINISH TIME The tour begins at 11.00 am on Thursday May 25, at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport to meet the coach to travel as a group to our hotel in Casablanca. The tour concludes at 12.00 noon on Thursday June 8, with a Hassan II Mosque Minaret, Casablanca coach transfer departing the hotel in Casablanca to Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport. Day 1 Thu May 25 Arrive Casablanca Arrive in Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco for group transfer to hotel. Check in and after time to refresh take a short walking tour. Welcome dinner at the hotel. (D) Day 2 Fri May 26 Casablanca-Rabat-Chefchaouen This morning visit the Hassan II Mosqe before leaving by coach for Chefchaouen. En route, stop at Rabat, the capital city and residence of the King, to enjoy the beauty of this coastal city. Blue Medina of Chefchaouen Continue travel to Chefchaouen for overnight. (B, L, D) Day 3 Sat May 27 Chefchaouen Explore the many small streets of the medina in this lovely town known for its rich blue color. Its multicultural heritage arises from its varied inhabitants, including Berber tribe people, Muslims, Jews, and Moors. Spend the afternoon at an NGO where craftspeople card, spin, and weave wool into fabric for Jelaba and Kasaba garments, traditional long, loose-fitting, outer robes. (B) Day 4 Sun May 28 Chefchaouen-Fes Travel to Fes with en route visits to Volubilis and Meknes. (B, D) Day 5 Mon May 29 Fes Take a walking tour of Fes and enjoy a visit a tannery to see how colorful leather is produced at the continent's largest such facility. Next, attend a cactus silk weaving workshop. Cactus silk is loomed by hand, from fibers found in the Agave Cacti in the Sahara Desert. This beautiful Moroccan textile is a crowd favorite due to its distinctive silky touch and the intricate, natural way it is traditionally assembled. (B, D) Day 6 Tue May 30 Fes Visit Medersa Bouaanani, an outstanding example of Marinid architecture. Then visit weaving and embroidery workshops before heading to the Cherry Button Cooperative to practice making needle-woven buttons. Then explore nearby Bhalil, a village known for cave houses and the making of djellaba buttons. Day 7 Wed May 31 Fes-Afourer Cross the Middle Atlas through the city of Ifrane, known as Little Switzerland because of its rooflines and almost perpetual snow on its moutain peaks. En route to Afourer, visit Khenifra, Kasbah Tadla and the city of Beni Mellal. (B, L, D) Day 8 Thu June 1 Afourer-Marrakech Depart for Marrakech. En route, visit a Berber village where Berber people live in mud brick houses. See rug making and rug wool dyeing demonstrations. Arrive in Marrakech in the late Marjorelle Gardens, Marrakech afternoon. (B, D) Day 9 Fri June 2 Marrakech Start the day with a visit to Jardin Majorelle, a breathtaking, enclosed garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle that was 40 years in the making. The property was once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, whose collection of North African textiles is at the Musée Berbère. (B, D) Day 10 Sat June 3 Marrakech A guided tour provides an introduction to Marrakech, called "the pearl of the south." Historical sightseeing includes the late 19th century Bahia Palace, Medersa Ben Youssef, Saadian tombs, and many other treasures. Enjoy an afternoon visit to the dyer district. (B, D) Day 11 Sun June 4 Marrakech-Tameslouht-Essaouira Travel the short distance from Marrakech to the village of Tameslouht. Meet the ladies of the village cooperative who will lead embroidery classes. Later travel to the coastal city of Essaouira. (B, D) Day 12 Mon June 5 Essaouira Travel south of Essaouira to attend a full-day Natural Dye Workshop. (B) Day 13 Tue June 6 Essaouira Enjoy a city tour of this Portuguese fortress dating from the 18th century. It is a beautiful destination on the Atlantic coastline. Along the way, visit a jewelry cooperative. (B) Day 14 Wed June 7 Essaouira-Casablanca Berber market, Marrakesh Travel to Casablanca with an en route stop at Safi, famous for ceramics and textiles. It is the Moroccan capital for pottery and home to the largest tagine in the world. Continue via El Jadida for a tour of the Portuguese citadel. Upon arrival in Casablanca, check into hotel. Enjoy farewell dinner. (B, D) Day 15 Thu June 8 Depart Casablanca After breakfast, group transfer to Casablanca International Airport for onward flight.
