TrentoRovereto. Towns of Culture Just two years after being introduced, the “TrentoRovereto. Towns of Culture” card is already a consolidated point of reference for those who visit the two towns of art and culture in the Valle dell’Adige. The tourist and cultural offer launched to ideally bring together the two areas and their history has proved to be, and will always be, an effective means of attracting visitors to the Valle dell'Adige. Trento offers a variety of attractions including splendid Renaissance palaces, the majestic Castello del Buonconsiglio and the new MUSE, one of the major natural science museums in Italy designed by Renzo Piano, as well as Roman and medieval remains, the Renaissance splendours of the Council of Trent and evidence of the troubled wars of the 20th century. Rovereto has just as much to offer in terms of innovation and traditions. The architectural gem of the Mart is just one of the treasures of this cultural centre in the Vallagarina, which also include the Museo della Guerra, the Campana dei Caduti and the Museo Civico. In the “Town of Peace” visitors can follow an ideal route that spans the Roman period, medieval times, Venetian rule and the 18th century, the period when Rovereto became an essential stopover on trips made by intellectuals and artists, including Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart. In addition to Trento and Rovereto, there are the villages along the river Adige, and castles, vestiges of the past, dotted along the valley. Not to mention the museums, palaces and international festivals. All this is “TrentoRovereto. Towns of Culture”, a new cultural project intended to overcome any local rivalry and provide a winning synergy. It is a new way of exploring the local area, which is neither political nor geographical but mainly based on culture and tourism. With the “TrentoRovereto Card” is quicker and easier to visit the museums, palaces and castles, take part in festivals, eat in the best restaurants and purchase quality products. The Departments of Tourism and Culture of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the municipal councils and the tourist boards of Trento and Rovereto, and Trentino Tourism and Promotion all aim to promote this opportunity as a means of extending our cultural horizons so that we can learn to enjoy a place along with its excellent cultural, gourmet and commercial features. 1
Museums Art, history, science and traditions. Culture plays a leading role in tourist attractions for visitors to the local area. The major new feature is the MUSE, the new science museum building designed by Renzo Piano, which now houses the contents of the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali. It invites visitors to reflect the facts of nature and importance of paying close attention to the relationship between nature and the environmental changes caused by human activities. Another outstanding museum is the Mart, one of the most prestigious museums of modern and contemporary art in Italy. It houses a rich collection of art including Futurism, Pop Art, Arte Povera and Realism. An additional highlight of the cultural offer is the Castello del Buonconsiglio, the largest monumental complex in Trentino Alto Adige, which holds very popular exhibitions every year. It also hosts an absolute masterpiece: the famous Ciclo dei Mesi (Cycle of the Months) at Torre Aquila. Visitors must not miss the Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina, the leading centre of local ethnography in Italy, and the Gallerie di Piedicastello, a unique exhibition area housed in two former road tunnels. Many other museums in the district match the most diverse interests of visitors. 3
The MUSE - Science Museum | Trento The MUSE is a dream come true due to substantial investment in culture by the Autonomous Province of Trento. It is an open site, where scientific and tech- nological knowledge is the key to examining the relationships between man and the environment while choosing sustainable development for the future. The new museum, inaugurated in summer 2013, offers a new approach for visitors: multimedia exhibits, interactive games, first-hand experimentation and culture mixed with practical activities are the distinguishing features of visits and a valid tool for informal learning. The architectural design by Renzo Piano is an outstanding added feature: the profile of the building recalls the surrounding mountains, with a balance of open and closed spaces that add charm and prestige to the entire exhibition location. Inside, displays feature the principle of “zero gravity”, namely, lightness and transparency. Once through the entrance, visitors are the protagonists of a multi-sensory tour, which follows the shape of the building, from top to bottom, as if on a mountain peak. The MUSE also coordinates other museums including the Museo Gianni Caproni, the Museo delle Palafitte di Ledro, the Stazione Limnologica on Lake Tovel, the Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti in Predazzo, the Giardino Botanico Alpino and the “Terrazza delle Stelle” astronomical observatory situated in the Viote valley of Monte Bondone. muse.it 4
Museo Caproni | Trento The museum is definitely a must not only for those who love flying and the history of civil and military aeronautics but also for those who are simply interested in history. Founded in 1927 by the engineer Gianni Caproni and his wife Timina Guasti, it can easily be considered the oldest aeronautical museum in the world. museocaproni.it Museo delle Palafitte di Ledro | Ledro In 1929, this fascinating archaeological site was discovered when the level of the lake dropped and thousands of poles surfaced, revealing evidence of important Neolithic sites. Today, the Museo delle Palafitte is home to over 4,000 everyday objects and organises educational activities and archaeology workshops. palafitteledro.it Giardino Botanico Alpino - Terrazza delle Stelle Osservatorio astronomico | Viote Monte Bondone The Giardino Botanico Alpino is one of the oldest in the Alps. It is home to over one thousand species of alpine and officinal plants, as well as plants in extinction. The Observatory is the ideal place from which to observe the starry sky with experienced experts. muse.it 5
Castello del Buonconsiglio Provincial monuments and collections | Trento Castello del Buonconsiglio is the pride and joy of the artistic, historic and architectural heritage of Trentino. The highest tower of the castle overlooks the town of Trento like a sentry. Once the ancient residence of the Prince-Bishops, from the 13th to the late 18th century, it houses precious permanent collections and magnificent frescoes, including beautiful ones by Romanino, as well as the extraordinary Ciclo dei Mesi at Torre Aquila, making it one of the most popular destinations in the “TrentoRovereto. Towns of Culture” district. The splendid building is divided into three sections: the Castello Vecchio, the Magno Palazzo and the Giunta Albertiana. The branches of Castello del Buonconsiglio are Castel Thun in the Val di Non, the symbol of the ancient grandeur of one of the most powerful noble families of Trentino, Castel Beseno, situated between Rovereto and Trento, the largest fortified complex in the province, and Castel Stenico, a treasure trove of art and history that overlooks the Giudicarie area. buonconsiglio.it 6
Museum of modern and contemporary art of Trento and Rovereto | Rovereto The symbol that makes the Mart recognisable worldwide is its enormous steel and glass dome, designed along with the rest of the building by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta, which welcomes visitors leaving them literally speechless. Today, the museum attracts a large number of visitors with its tens of thousands of works of art. PopArt, Arte Povera and Realism are just some of the art currents represented in the museum. In its exhibition rooms, permanent exhibitions are accompanied by interesting temporary ones, but the backbone of this museum is undoubtedly Futurism. Of great interest are also the two branches of the Mart, the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero, situated nearby, and the Galleria Civica di Trento based in Trento. Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero | Rovereto This branch of the Mart, just a short distance from it, is the only Futurist museum in Italy. Here visitors can admire the collection donated by the artist Depero, native of the town of Rovereto: paintings, cloth tarsia, furniture, furnishings and applied art objects. mart.tn.it 7
Galleria Civica di Trento | Trento The Galleria Civica in Trento re-opens to the public. The town re-acquires an exhibition space, enriched with the collections and expertise of the Mart, allowing visitors to rediscover the artistic heritage of Trentino. At the same time, Trento will host a permanent workshop: the old premises in Via Belenzani will become the new space for international research. mart.trento.it/galleriacivica Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra | Rovereto The museum, inaugurated in 1921 by King Victor Emmanuel III, is a place of memory established just after the end of the Great War to keep alive the memory of the war it and of the many patriots who died. The documentation at the museum fixes all aspects of the war in our memory, including cultural and social, making the it one of the major and most complete museums in Europe, with its rich collection of uniforms, photographs, paintings, weapons and other war relics. In a dark tunnel at the foot of the castle, open from May to November, visitors can observe European artillery dated 1915-18. museodellaguerra.it 8
Le Gallerie | Piedicastello - Trento Today, the Gallerie di Piedistallo, through which thousands of cars used to pass, recount the history of Trentino and its community. This is done through a variety of forms of expression and tools, including state-of-the-art technology and painstaking historical research by the Trentino History Museum Foundation, which coordinates the exhibition space. The two tunnels, covering 6,000 square metres, host events, temporary exhibitions and workshops. Rather than a museum the Gallerie are a new way of portraying a community's past and the small and important events that have characterised Trentino in recent centuries. They focus on the tragedy of the wars and the social and cultural changes that have taken place in this extremely beautiful borderland. museostorico.it 9
Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina San Michele all’Adige By examining folk traditions we can learn about fundamental values in order to face the present and approach the future: this is the message of the Museum of the Customs and Traditions of the Trentino People, which not only exhibits folklore objects, just like the majority of European folklore museums, but also carefully examines the work culture of peasants and artisans, presenting them in a global context. All this is thanks to its founder, the Trentino-Bohemian scholar Giuseppe Šebesta, who, in the late 1960s, decided to house the museum in the ancient fortified monastery, the Prepositura Agostiniana in San Michele all'Adige. Once inside the entrance gate, a maze-like path takes visitors to the heart of the building, to a large number of exhibition rooms arranged according to thematic areas that include agriculture, woodworking, metalworking, textile crafts, livestock breeding, sheep farming, hunting, as well as religious and folklore traditions. The museum is an active institution, which, among other things, collaborates with local communities on projects concerning cultural restoration and enhancement. museosanmichele.it 10
Fondazione Opera Campana dei Caduti | Rovereto What could be more symbolic than a bell cast from bronze cannons? A great allegory that demonstrates and advocates universal peace among all men: this is Maria Dolens, the Bell of Peace, which overlooks the town of Rovereto and the Vallagarina from the top of Colle Miravalle hill. The Bell of Peace, the largest pealing bell in the world, tolls a hundred times every evening to commemorate those killed in all wars, invoking peace and brotherhood among peoples. Ideated by Don Antonio Rossaro, the enlightened priest of Rovereto, it was cast in Trento in 1924 using bronze from the cannons of the belligerant countries of the First World War. Over the decades, the bell has been recast twice. It was blessed in Saint Peter's Square in Rome by Pope Paul VI in 1965. fondazioneoperacampana.it 11
Museo Diocesano Tridentino | Trento Just behind the Fontana del Nettuno visitors can find the entrance to the Museo Diocesano Tridentino, housed in Palazzo Pretorio, the ancient residence of the Prince-Bishops, where important evidence of local religious art from the 11th to the 19th century are preserved. The museum tour ends in the splendid room of the Flemish tapestries, opposite late-Gothic sculptures and ancient polyptychs . The museum is also custodian to the early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio and the archaeological finds uncovered between 1964 and 1977. Not to be missed is the multimedia station that uses 3D models to reconstruct the main building stages that marked the history of the cathedral. For those who love sacred art, a visit to the branch of the museum at Villa Lagarina is also recommended. museodiocesanotridentino.it 12
Underground Tridentum | Trento Every Italian town with an ancient history has a hidden wing or underground space, where its pulsating heart lies and where past relics of a Roman town can be visited. Trento also has “underground depths”. The many sites of Tridentum currently open to visitors include the S.A.S.S. (Underground Archaeological Site), the Porta Veronensis, the archaeological area of Palazzo Lodron and the early Christian Basilica below the Duomo. Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé | Fiavé The Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé is one of the 111 locations that comprise the site dedicated to the prehistoric pile-dwellings of the Alps, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Extraordinary wooden artefacts, evidence of remarkable con- struction techniques, videos, installations and a large plastic structure lead visitors to the amazing atmosphere of a pile-dwelling village dating back 3,500 years. Museo Retico Sanzeno | Sanzeno The museum hosts a collection of original artefacts from eras dating from the 11th century BC to the Roman period. The museum guides visitors along an educational tour called the “Well of Time”, which starts at the bottom of the building and continues along a spiral route that covers the entire history of the Val di Non. trentinocultura.net/archeologia.asp 13
Fondazione Museo Civico | Rovereto In the village of Santa Caterina in Rovereto, visitors can delve into the fascinating world of archaeology, from prehistoric to medieval times, in search of relics of the past. These can be found at the Museo Civico in Rovereto: founded in 1851, it is one of the oldest in Italy. The museum currently houses permanent naturalistic and historical collections, a planetarium, the Lego Education Innovation Studio, a copious library, as well as educational activities including workshops on archaeology, botany, palaeontology, geology and robotics. Another urban space coordinated by the Museo Civico is Palazzo Alberti Poja, an architectural gem, which currently houses the works of the Quadreria Comunale (Municipal Picture Gallery), as well as many other permanent and temporary exhibitions. museocivico.rovereto.tn.it Museo del Fossile - Giardino Botanico | Brentonico A few kilometres from Rovereto, visitors can go hunting for fossils dating back to ancient times. The Museo del Fossile houses many such finds, where over one thousand specimens are attractively displayed in the vaults of Palazzo Eccheli Baisi. The museum is situated on the slopes of Monte Baldo, also known as the Garden of Europe due to its immense wealth of flora, which can be admired by visitors in the Renaissance-style botanical garden. visitrovereto.it 14

Castles Symbols of power and evidence of centuries-old history, ancient mansions and splendid castles are so widespread throughout the valleys of Trentino that they are one of the main tourist attractions. Many of them are located in strategic positions that were ideal for guarding territories and defending properties. The ancient Castello del Buonconsiglio, with its incredible historic heritage, is the symbolic monument of the town of Trento. It houses a famous cycle of frescoes at Torre Aquila. With such a large number of castles in Trentino there really is something for all tastes. The impressive fortress of Castel Beseno, which overlooks the entire Vallagarina, houses fascinating artefacts of the ancient art of war, whereas Castel Thun, in the Val di Non, is an architectural gem, recently restored to its former splendour. The Castello di Stenico, in the Valli Giudicarie, is located in a strong position overlooking the communication routes to the valley. Its history is linked to the Prince-Bishops of Trento. Then there is the Castello di Rovereto, a medieval building and important historic site, and the Castello di Avio, owned by the FAI (the Italian National Trust) with a splendid cycle of medieval frescoes. 17
Castello del Buonconsiglio One of the symbolic monuments of Trento is the famous Castello del Buonconsiglio, an attractive location for a museum. It forms part of an exhibition network that includes three other castles in Trentino: Castel Thun, Castel Beseno and the Castello di Stenico. Castel Thun The castle is an architectural gem situated among the apple orchards of the Val di Non. In 2010, after painstaking restoration, this princely residence in Trentino returned to its ancient splendour. Today, it still preserves intact its original furnishings. Castel Beseno The largest fortified complex in Trentino is situated about half way between Trento and Rovereto. It is a true time machine for visitors, which does not comprise electronic devices but stones, lintels, battlement walkways and underground passages. Castello di Stenico The Prince-Bishops of Trento used this castle to exert their political control over the Valli Giudicarie. The castle offers a new exhibition tour dedicated to the applied arts, offering visitors evidence of the creativity of the craftsmen who have worked in the local area throughout the centuries. buonconsiglio.it 18
Castello di Rovereto An impressive medieval fortress, the Castello di Rovereto is a major historic site. Situated in a strategic position, on a rocky hill on the right bank of the river Leno, it looks like an imposing military stronghold. The first nucleus was built by the nobles of Castelbarco from the 13th - 14th century as the seat of their feudal power in the Vallagarina. The castle has been restored and now houses the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra: for over ninety years, it has been collecting and preserving documents about WWI. The museum organises temporary exhibitions dedicated to the memory of the Great War and modern conflicts. museodellaguerra.it Castello di Avio The high keep and boundary wall of the Castello di Avio, perched on the slopes of Monte Vignola, dominate the Valle dell'Adige. The castle became the property of the Castelbarco family and was later taken over by the Venetians in 1411. Since 1977, it has been owned by the F.A.I. (Italian Environment Fund), which has carried out complex restoration work. Inside it is adorned with 14th century frescoes, including the series on warfare, as well as the “Room of Love”. fondoambiente.it 19
Festivals The word “festival” originally meant a “period of festivities”, mainly referring to forms of entertainment and fun, with particular emphasis on music. With the addition of contents and nuances over the centuries, this word now encompasses a wide range of meanings, yet it retains its original etymological core. Today, it means festivities but in the broad sense, referring to moments of entertainment concerning various aspects, including music, cinema, science, exhibitions, theatre, contemporary dance and economics. The Trento and Rovereto area offers a variety of festivals: the FilmFestival della Montagna, Festival Economia, music festivals as a tribute to Mozart, reflections on the world of education, artistic forms of expression and contemporary culture with Futuro Presente and Oriente Occidente, as well as a journey back to ancient times with the Rassegna del Cinema Archeologico. Such a variety, embracing a wide range of interests and subjects, offers something for everyone. 21

The real star of the festival, even more than important economists and Nobel Prize-winners, is the general public which crowds into the debates, asking the speakers pressing questions. This is presented with the support of prominent directors, screenwriters, actors and composers. In addition to meetings and shows, film screenings and artistic performances are scheduled. This path of research and reflection, open to the world, focuses on new input from far-away cultures. festivalfuturopresente.it Festival Mozart | Rovereto The bond between the famous composer and Trentino is reintroduced in the Festival Mozart, organised in Rovereto in the month of August. The festival is based on the music of this composer from Salzburg and deeply investigates historic and cultural aspects. In 1769, Rovereto was the first stop on the journey to Italy of young Wolfgang Amadeus, who was 13 years old at the time, and accompanied by his father. At Christmas that year, in the rooms of Palazzo Todeschi, Mozart gave a remarkable concert, delighting the local nobles with his genius. festivalmozartrovereto.com 23
Oriente Occidente | Rovereto, Trento Oriente Occidente is one of the major European festivals of contemporary dance and dance theatre. It is scheduled in Rovereto and Trento at the end of August, beginning of September. Different genres and forms of expression come together not far from the Mart with shows, meetings and discussions that often focus on the intercultural dialogue between different peoples, starting with the assertion that diversity is the mainstay around which art revolves and creates new and attractive forms of expression. orienteoccidente.it Settimana Mozartiana |Rovereto e Vallagarina For five days, in September, the music of the famous composer from Salzburg can be heard in the villages of the Vallagarina as part of the Settimana Mozartiana, perfectly strengthening the connection of these places to the composer and his life. Educa | Rovereto Educa, organised in September, is a national event on education that arises from the wish to emphasise the importance of education, which is the driving force for balanced progress. In this current period of contrasts, Educa aims to bring together and encourage reflection in all those who do not wish to passively take part in the chorus of complaints about the education crisis, the delegi- timization of schools, parental incompetence, uncontrollable children and adolescents. The event will focus on the theme of education, looking at the future with courage, hope, awareness, dreams and emotions. educaonline.it Rassegna Internazionale del Cinema Archeologico Rovereto Held every year in October, the Rassegna Internazionale del Cinema Archeologico is an important international venue for directors, archaeologists, researchers and students. Trentodoc
Excellent metodo classico of Trentino Trentodoc sparkling wine is the genuine expression of the land it comes from, a small area with a broad climatic range. Trentino is naturally suited to growing grapes to make Metodo Classico sparkling wine, mainly due to its high altitudes. The base wine is made, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanche and Menieur grapes, and then develops its unique flavours and aromas. After second fermentation in the bottle, it acquires a refined perlage that has unmistakable sapidity, freshness and fragrances, making it the only sparkling wine of the mountains with truly excellent international acclaim. Its secret is not only in the land but also in its Metodo Classico production method. Everything began with Giulio Ferrari The history of Trentodoc began with Giulio Ferrari, an inquisitive young winemaker who became an international symbol for the sparkling wine sector. During his study-trips he was greatly aware of the similarities between the soils of France and Trentino. After his many experiences, he put what he had learned into practice and began to produce the first bottles of Metodo Classic sparkling wine in Trento, not far from the Duomo. His insight was well-founded and led to the establishment of other companies, including, in 1984, the Istituto Trento Doc. to protect the quality, origin, method and popularity of this wine. But that is not all: the sparkling wine of Trentino was the first, after Champagne, to achieve D.O.C. acknowledgement for its Metodo Classico method. In 2007, the collective trademark was established. Today, it groups together 39 sparkling wine producers, and can be found on each bottle. A versatile wine Trentodoc is a complete wine that is ideal for pairing with many different foods. Those who taste it should be given the opportunity and pleasure of discovering its versatility and nuances each time. Trentodoc is ideal for festive occasions, everyday toasts and dinner with friends. Trentino sparkling wine, recognised by the trademark on each bottle, is available in the following varieties: Brut, Millésimé, Riserva and Rosé. 29
