New Initiatives to Increase Awareness and Education The HCQU has committed to providing an increase awareness and education on skin integrity/ pressure injury prevention and The Fatal Four. Skin integrity means that the skin is healthy, undamaged and able to perform its basic functions. A skin integrity issue might mean that the skin is damaged, vulnerable to injury or unable to heal quickly. A pressure injury is localized damage to the skin and/or underlying soft tissue, usually over a bony area or related to a medical or other device. The injury can present as intact skin or an open ulcer and may be painful. Pressure injuries can be devastating for the people they affect. They cause pain and distress and can potentially be life-threatening. The Fatal Four training addresses the top health issues that impact the people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) at a greater rate and with more severity than those in the general population. The top health issues include: • Aspiration • Bowel Obstruction • Dehydration • GERD • Seizures • Sepsis These health issues are linked to serious illness and preventable deaths in community-based settings. They often go unrecognized for several reasons, which calls for an increase need for awareness and education. As more individuals with IDD transition into community settings, caregivers need to be familiar with these common medical conditions. These conditions are often preventable or at least managed effectively with attentive care. Caregivers play a vital role in the lives of the people they care for. Knowing how to prevent, recognize and seek treatment for select medical situations will not only improve the quality of their care, but will also save lives. Further in-depth information is available on each medical condition upon request. iii
The PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum is now Available Online The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) and The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) have undertaken a joint initiative to address the needs of people who have an intellectual disability as well as mental health challenges. People who have both challenges are commonly referred to as those who have dual diagnosis. The goal of this training curriculum is to provide information that can aid in the understanding of the struggles and the triumphs of those you support or will support. This curriculum was designed to demonstrate the complexity of dual diagnoses and the factors that need to be considered to best support those with whom you come into contact. The PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum was also designed to demonstrate that all people in this world, regardless of their challenges, are much more alike than they are different. For more information about each of the specific modules and the course outline, go to the Philadelphia Coordinated Health Care (PCHC) website: www.pchc.org under Resources/Publications/Behavioral Health and click here for the DDX Direct Support Curriculum Training Booklet. The PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum is now available Online. This curriculum is designed for Direct Supporters who work in either the intellectual disability field or the mental health field. Each specific module has a quiz, certificate and resources attached. The online version of the PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum is available on ** https://www.myodp.org/course/view.php?id=1186 iv
