IMPRESSIONS ART PROGRAMMES The Leisure Artist These classes are suitable for the beginner & hobby artist who is looking to develop their creative and technical skills in a relaxed setting while enjoying the company of others. Students can bring their own choice of project to the class, or work with Glenys to define their specific interests and needs then embark upon an artwork which will progress their skills. Classes are kept small to allow for plenty of tutor attention. Pay-as-you-go or pre-pay for the term at a discounted price – the choice is yours. Just bring any art materials you have for your project or if you are new to painting and drawing, just come along with your ideas and any images you may like to work from, and Glenys will provide guidance for the most suitable materials which can be purchased at the time. All media are catered for, except watercolours – although you are welcome to “dabble” with watercolours, Glenys prefers not to teach in this medium. Fees: You will receive a 10% discount on all art materials from Impressions purchased during your course. • $22 per class pay-as-you-go (BYO materials) or • $20 per class ($180 for 9-week term, $200 for 10-week term), if full term is paid before the first class or • $25 per class – all materials supplied (except for canvas or board) or $23 per class if full term is paid before the first class ($207 for 9- week term or $230 for 10-week term). 2

SHORT COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PROGRAMME TERM ONE Introduction to Painting: February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. TERM TWO Playing with Pencils: April 12 Oils Made Simple: April 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24 Image Transfer: 31 May Making the Most of Acrylics: June 14, 21, 28, July 5 These courses and workshops are held on Monday mornings, from 10am – noon. SHORT COURSES Introduction to Painting This short course is designed to introduce students to the materials and processes to get them starting to paint in acrylics. Students will be given guidance to: - • Plan a simple image, • Prime and seal a canvas with acrylic gesso, • Complete a tonal sketch and underpainting, • Learn basic skills in colour mixing and manipulation, • Use both wet and dry brush techniques, • Apply glazes of thin transparent paint to build deep, rich colour, • Add reflections and shadows to indicate the direction of light on the subject, • Discuss how and when to varnish completed acrylic paintings safely. 5
By the end of this course, students will have completed a small painting to take away. Acrylics have been chosen because of their quick drying time; however, the content of the course will provide a sound basis for continuing into other media if so desired. • 10am – 12 noon, Mondays February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15, 22. • $150.00 fee includes all materials used • Protective clothing is recommended. (“Oils Made Simple” and “Making the Most of Acrylics” are other short courses that are suitable for anyone wishing to extend the knowledge and experience gained in this course.) Oils Made Simple This course is designed to de-mystify how to paint with oils effectively and safely following the rules of oil painting. As oils take time to become “touch- dry” the course is scheduled over 4 weeks to allow participants to complete a simple, but effective painting. Course content includes: - • The foundations and principles behind the rules of oil painting. • Safe painting practices when working with solvents. • Creation of a value under-painting. • Building a series of stable oil glazes to achieve luminous and rich colours. • Direct and indirect painting techniques including the use of painting knives. • Guidelines for varnishing. By the end of the course, students will have completed a small painting to take away. • 10am – 12 noon, Mondays April 26, May 3, 10, 17 and 24. • $125 fee includes all materials used for 4 x 2-hour classes • Protective clothing is recommended 6
Making the Most of Acrylics This course is for anyone interested in comparing different ways of using acrylics and a range of acrylic mediums. Students will choose a subject to paint, then paint that using up to 5 different approaches and the products that enable that to be achieved. Then the paintings will be compared to select the one (s) which achieve the level of satisfaction you want. Painting approaches taken may include: - 1. Alla Prima (Direct) 2. Glazing (Indirect) 3. Painting on an absorbent ground 4. Modelling the form with moulding paste 5. Mixed Acrylic Media This course allows you to experience a range of acrylic products and processes so that you can select those which suit your style best. • 1am – 12 noon, Mondays June 14, 21, 28, July 5 • $100.00 incl. all materials used. Protective clothing is recommended. WORKSHOPS Image Transfer Using Acrylic Mediums This workshop will explore a simple method for transferring images which have been copied or printed into a painting or collage that you are completing. 7
Acrylic mediums will be used to transfer images onto an artwork surface to become part of the completed image. The special charm of this simple process is the “aged” look achieved. This is a workshop to be playful. Whether you consider yourself to be highly creative – or just wish you were – this is a workshop which caters for all. When the session is over, you will be able to apply your own creative style to create interesting pieces. • 10am – 12 noon, Monday 31 May • $25.00 fee includes all materials used • Protective clothing is recommended Playing with Pencils To draw means “to pull” – hence the correct way to hold a pencil enables the artist to “pull” marks. This workshop will give you the opportunity to learn about the ranges of both dry and water-soluble pencils as well as the tools and accessories available to use with them. Students will explore a range of pencil techniques, the various types of pencils, both wet and dry, as well as the types of mark-making that are possible. Accessories including papers, water brushes, sharpening and erasing tools will be used. • 10am – 12 noon, Monday April 12 • $25.00 fee includes all materials used. • Protective clothing is recommended.
