WELCOME TO OUR REMARKABLE HOME We acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land. WELCOME TO THE FACULTY OF LAW At the University of Toronto, we offer one of the world’s outstanding legal educations. To be a student at our law school is to join a wonderful community of the finest legal scholars and students, working together in the pursuit of academic and professional excellence. You will learn from our esteemed faculty, who frequently win major research awards, and are significant thought leaders in academia, the legal profession and public policy. Studying at U of T Law will give you access to some of North America’s most estab- lished co-curricular opportunities that will acquaint you with the best of the legal profession both locally and internationally. You might work on criminal appeals pending before the Ontario Court of Appeal or Supreme Court of Canada, volunteer for the UN while on an international human rights intern- ship, or help give legal advice to tech start-ups at law firms and incubators across the city. Our commitment to accessibility, diversity and the public interest means that as a student, you will experience a community with a wide range of knowledge, experiences and perspectives. A legal education at U of T not only teaches legal doctrine, but equips our students with analytical tools that can be brought to bear on a range of real-world problems. Our graduates go on to leadership positions in public interest organizations, politics, business, and on the bench and bar with an education that serves them well in making a transformative impact on our community. I am excited about the future of our law school. Our new Jackman Law Building, which opened in 2016, includes innovative technology and houses many of the programs and centres that make this faculty truly unique. Expanded classrooms and social spaces create dynamic engagement opportunities for students, professors and the community. I hope that you’ll take up our invitation to visit with us as you carefully consider the many options available to you. EDWARD IACOBUCCI DEAN, FACULTY OF LAW JAMES M. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS - UPPER YEAR INDIGENOUS INITIATIVES OFFICE In accordance with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, Indigenous and non-Indigenous students engage with Indigenous Elders, scholars, activists and professionals in classes and activities at the faculty, in the courts and in the community. You can compete in the Kawaskimhon Moot, work on the student-run Indigenous Law Journal, and have opportunities to learn about Indigenous and Aboriginal law inside and outside the classroom. You can also gain practical ex- perience by participating in our clinical program with Aboriginal Legal Services, and deepen your academic experience with the Certificate in Aboriginal Legal Studies. During my 1L year, I was co- president of the Indigenous Law Students’ Association (ILSA). Not only are the other Indigenous students a great support system, but the ILSA office itself is a great space to study, bead, smudge and hold meetings. It’s even right next door to Amanda Carling, Manager of Indigenous Initia- tives - another incredible support within the Faculty! FINANCIAL AID As the first in my family to attend university with the support of my hard-working single mother, I initially thought I would have to sacrifice U of T’s top-notch legal education for a less expensive program. The financial aid program gave over 35% of my tuition in bursaries, and the interest-free loans will cover my remaining tuition and bar admis- sion fees . I expect to fast-track my way to getting called to the bar in January 2021 and be debt free sooner than expected. Without the law school’s financial aid I would not have been able to spend my 1L summer on a human rights internship in Sierra Leone, or spend a term of my final year in Australia as an exchange student.
