Thinkers Leaf November 2020 Vol - 5 Book Review A man called Ove - by Fredrick Backman An emotionally charged drama! Ove’s life is detailed both past and present. Ove has specific ways that he likes to do things, and his way is the only ‘correct’ way. He does not like most people, and he wants nothing more than to end his life. It is not until a pregnant woman, with two kids, and a useless husband (Ove’s opinion not mine) move in next door that his heart begins to open once again. I really liked the book, and I had so many emotions while reading this. I would laugh, cry, get angry, then repeat the cycle all over again. I both loved, and disliked his character at the same time. I struggled with this at first, but in the end, I think it was my dislike of some of Ove’s character traits that made me love him more. I liked the writing style, and the different timelines of Ove’s life that were covered. I especially liked reading about Ove’s past, his life as a little boy with his father, and then later as a teenager. I did feel that the story was a bit slow at times, but I only felt this when the story was focused on present day. Overall the book is well written, 2 and the story of Ove’s life is beautifully shared with the reader.
