Be Prepared While many will choose to stay home this year, if you do travel, be sure your vehicle is in good running condition, you have plenty of rest and are prepared for any emergency. Traveling by car during the holidays has the highest fatality rate of any major form of transportation based on fatalities per passenger mile. In 2020, it is estimated 163 people died on New Year’s Day, 485 on Thanksgiving Day, and for Christmas Day 2019, it is estimated 115 lost their lives, according to Injury Facts. Alcohol impairment is involved in about a third of the fatalities. If leaving town, let the Harris County Sherriff’s office look out for your property while you are gone. Call (346-286-1700), ask for the Vacation Watch program or report it online at www.harriscountyso.org go to “Services” then “Public Programs” and tap on “Vacation Watch”. Stay safe on the roads over the holidays and every day: • Prepare your car for Winter and keep an emergency preparedness kit with you, make sure your brakes and tires are in good condition. • Get a good night’s sleep before departing and avoid drowsy driving. • Plan! Leave early in case of heavy traffic. • Make sure every person in the vehicle is properly buckled up no matter how long or short the distance traveled. • Put that cell phone away! Many distractions can occur while driving during the holidays, but cell phones are the main culprit. • Practice defensive driving! Designate a sober driver to ensure guests make it home safely after a holiday party. Alcohol or over the counter prescriptions and illegal drugs can cause impairment. FALL CREEK WINTER 2021 | PG 3
TREES FOR FALL CREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE by Glenn Olsen and Elizabeth White-Olsen The Fall Creek Landscape Committee took a “socially-distanced” field trip in December with Cory Schneider of Earthcare and Becki Johnston of Spectrum Association Management to recommend trees that would grow well in Fall Creek. We visited sections along Wilson Road where unhealthy trees will need to be replaced in coming years, as well as portions of Fall Creek View Drive that currently lack trees. Our goals were two-fold: 1) To serve Fall Creek homeowners by adding trees that offer striking spring and fall color to our neighborhood and enhance the overall attractiveness of our community, which can help boost home values. And, 2) To enhance habitat for Fall Creek’s birds, butterflies, and pollinators and improve the quality of our natural environment. Here are a few of the trees recommended by Glenn Olsen, Landscape Committee member and co-founder of GO Native Landscaping for Birds and Butterflies. If you are looking to add trees to your yard, get these, as they will thrive in Fall Creek’s soil conditions: • Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) • Acacia (Acacia farnesiana) • Water oak (Quercus nigra) • Cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) • American holly (Ilex opaca) • Willow oak (Quercus phellos) • Deciduous holly (Ilex decidua) • Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) • Red bay (Persea borbonia) • Retama (Parkinsonia aculeata) • Red oak (Quercus rubra var. drummondii) • Australian bottlebrush (Callistemon citrons) • Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) All these trees are native to Texas except for the Australian Bottlebrush, a tree Olsen recommends because its long bright red blooms attract nectar-feeding birds and insects. The retama is not native to the Houston area, but it’s native to South Texas. It has thin, delicate leaves and golden yellow flowers with a deep burgundy center spot, and its open, airy appearance and bright colors are quite striking. Hummingbirds visit its flowers in spring and fall. Winter months are the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs, as they will have a chance to settle in a few months before contending with the heat of summer. Some of these trees might be found at chains that have nurseries like Lowe’s or Home Depot, but chain stores tend to sell plants that please people without always including the larger perspective of pleasing people, birds, and pollinators, a perspective which is healthier and better for the environment. You’re more likely to find these trees at family-owned businesses whose owners are more knowledgeable, nurseries like Nature’s Way in Conroe or Buchanan’s Native Plants in Houston Heights. We hope our December field trip leads to a larger diversity of trees in Fall Creek and that they will support the happiness of Fall Creek’s homeowners, birds, and pollinators for years to come. The Landscape Committee is tasked with the beautification of the common areas in Fall Creek. We welcome new members and all that’s required is an interest, but not expertise, in plants and horticulture. Our meetings are posted both on Nextdoor and at www.fallcreekhouston.com. We continue to meet via zoom or outside during the coronavirus pandemic. As chairperson, I would like to acknowledge the members of the committee who provided invaluable service in 2020. They are Pamela Fitch, Barbara Heywood, Elizabeth White-Olsen, Glenn Olsen, Paul Phillips, Chris Guillotte, Christina Madsen, and Fred Scibuola. Carol Deeb PG 4 | WINTER 2021 FALL CREEK
