Welcome to Market House Theatre! MHT had its beginning in 1963 when
a small acting troupe had the vision to transform the 1905 public market
house into a theatre. Since then, the Theatre has seen phenomenal
growth and draws audiences from across the region.
The mission of the Market House Theatre is to develop and share the
creative abilities of children and adults through arts education classes
and the production of plays. The organization also brings theatre into the
schools as a teaching tool for math, science, social studies, history and
literacy.

4 MARKET HOUSE THEATRE SEASON 57Director’s Notes Michael Cochran Over a year ago I began to write this play. I wanted to create a story that was an alternative for theaters to the standard classic Christmas Carol and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever that is so often done each year. I knew that I wanted it to reflect faith and family themes. What followed was a journey into my childhood memories and family stories. I can remember eagerly awaiting the Christmas catalog from Sears and Roebuck each year as a child. I would spend days looking through this catalog that was filled with the most amazing toys. That book was magical to me. I also remember as a child going to my dad’s Machinist Union Christmas party at the local movie theater to see a movie and at the end “Santa” would walk down the aisles passing out brown paper bags filled with candy and oranges and apples. As a kid growing up in Wisconsin getting a big orange in the middle of winter was magical and I remember that more than all the other stuff in the bag. I remember the Christmas stories from our church as I grew up. Thinking of the strangers who showed up cold and hungry with no place to stay for the night. I’ve always been fascinated by the connection of gifts given in the middle of the night with no one there to witness them. The gifts that we can’t always see with our eyes but with our hearts. As I finished up the first couple of drafts I shared it with my wife, April, who gave me lots of great feedback. Then I worked with Kathy Pingel in Florida who helped me edit the play. Writing and rewriting almost 70 drafts with scenes added and removed and themes clarified to get to the heart of what I wanted to say. During this time the pandemic had changed our world. Because of the additional time I now had in the evenings, I was able to spend more time writing. I eventually asked a group of local actors to read the play in a Zoom link so I could hear it and get their input. This gave me a great deal of valuable insight to go back and edit the play again. We held a public reading for a small invited audience as the first event in the new outdoor courtyard theatre space in July. Those who sat and listened to the play being read by actors gave me lots of feedback that helped me shape the play again. My hope was to send it off to other theaters and hopefully get it produced and eventually published. After that I hoped that maybe one day MHT might produce it. When it became apparent in October that MHT would not be able to produce The Little Mermaid, which was originally scheduled in December for Christmas, I put my script forward to the theatre as a possible alternative. I had planned for someone else to direct the play but when that didn’t work out I took over as the director. This was the first time I have moved from playwright to director and didn’t have to try to figure out what was in the mind of the playwright when they wrote it. It is a humbling experience and now as a director I could see some of the flaws that I had been blind to before as the writer. Words and phrases the cast had a hard time saying or action that needed to be changed because it was too hard to accomplish in the time I had allotted in the script. 6 MARKET HOUSE THEATRE SEASON 57
The actors in this journey - Amber Dawn, Tom Dolan, Scott Dossett, Addie
Franklin, Clark Turner, and Annie Peck have been so patient with me as I directed
and then continued to make edits and changes to the script throughout the
rehearsal process. I think they got at least two new drafts of the script during
the rehearsal process and even had some line additions right up until three days
before performance as I continued to tweak the script. It was truly a collaborative
process with the actors as we worked together to make the script come to
life. The design team of Tom Hansen (set and the lights), Angela Hoerner,
and Jennifer Miller helped so much in forcing me to think through all the little
aspects I had written that weren’t fleshed out. Stage Manager Denise Bristol has
been a big help keeping my script grammatically correct for the written version
changes. Alex Hilkey (MHT Marketing Director) helped me refine the description
of the show and create the marketing images to promote it. Finally, what began
fourteen months ago is now a reality and a play that I hope will allow you to
remember those wonderful moments from your childhood and the stories of faith
and mystery this Christmas season. Thank you so much from the bottom of
my heart for supporting Market House Theatre and I hope that you have a Merry
Christmas and that 2021 will bring us all the miracles we hope for.

Meet the talented people who are involved in bringing you this production!
Listed in alphabetical order
Amber Dawn (Mary)
“What a miraculous and magical show! Thank you Michael
and MHT for this beautiful reminder of the true heart of love
and Christmas”. A MHT veteran, Amber began her acting
career in Southern California and holds a Bachelor of Arts
in Acting and Directing from SEMO. She has performed in
TV commercials, movies and on stage. Amber currently is a
work at home Mom. She is also a part-time photographer with her own label: New
Dawning Photography, and is a freelance photographer for VUE Magazine. She
currently resides in Paducah, KY with her daughter, Ealyn and son, Euriah.
Tom Dolan (Tom) is glad to be back on the MHT stage,
having last appeared as Fred in Evelyn in Purgatory. He
started acting at an early age as the class clown at his
grade school. While his friends and classmates enjoyed
his performances, his teachers weren’t as appreciative
of his skillset. He finally stepped foot on stage in high
school and hasn’t stopped since. He has been performing
at MHT since 1992, when he was cast in The Music Man. He has appeared in
over 40 mainstage productions, as well as numerous fundraisers and murder
mysteries. He has also been in 7 locally and regionally produced films, as well
as appearing in commercials and TV shows. He is the coordinator of MURDER
TO GO- a murder mystery troupe at the Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers. He
is an avid Three Stooges fan and collector, as well as a St. Louis Cardinals &
Blues fan. He and his wife Lois are enjoying being “empty nesters” but love
to visit friends and family, and always enjoy when sons Josh (wife Analiese
and grandsons Max & Oliver), Matt, and Ben come home to visit. He works for
Home Pro Advantage as a customer service rep and scheduler. Thanks to Lois
for always being a great fan and supporter!
