1 What is Celebrate Gisborne? • It is a celebration of all that is good about Gisborne . . . the food, the people, the wine, the artists, the sunshine, the beaches and everything else that makes this region so special. • Celebrate is a charity dinner and auction at The Vines @ Bushmere on March 9 to raise money for a new building for Hospice Tairawhiti. • Gisborne gal done good Jackie Clarke is our MC for the night – she’s a singer and all-round star of the stage, so prepare to be entertained. • Auction items will include things that will create memories . . . from a special trip away to one of the many wonderful baches, a gorgeous piece of art or more. • Celebrate is the perfect opportunity for businesses to toast their success, say thank you to clients, staff and others, by hosting them at what promises to be a very memorable evening. Ja ck General ie Cl ark e Celebrate 2016 raised a massive $70,000 to kick start the fundraising for the new Hospice Tairawhiti building . . . and hopes are high that figure will be matched again this year. The event is a sell-out before tickets have a chance to hit the streets, with sponsors calling to ensure they have seats to this very popular gathering. Every cent raised at Celebrate Gisborne will go directly to Hospice Tairawhiti. Event organiser Bridgette Penny says while the focus is certainly on fundraising, it is also a chance for Hospice Tairawhiti to give back to the community. “Celebrate Gisborne is our way of saying thank you to those who support us and choose to operate here,” says Bridgette. “Of course I would love it if we outdid our efforts of last time.” Behind the auction They say good things take time . . . and that’s become a bit of a mantra around the all-important decisions about where the new Hospice Tairawhiti building will go, and just what it will look like. General manager Barbara Grout says the organisation is in negotiations to lease land. “There has been much discussion about what the new premises will be like,” she says. “It is vital we make the best possible decision for the community with the long-term future in mind. There are a lot of things to be considered.” Larger premises would enhance all that Hospice Tairawhiti offer to the wider community, including more programmes and choices for people as to how they would like services delivered. “We are reminded daily of how constricted we are in our current building, so turning our aspiration of a larger facility into a reality for the district will be very special for us all.” Ne w Ze Further information ala nd Pr im eM inis Contact Kelly Simpson - Hospice Tairawhiti on 0274 318 764 ter Jac inda Arder PM Jacinda Ardern…the artist n and he r partner Clarke Gayf Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will be showing her artistic side with her support of Celebrate Gisborne. 2 ‘Freestyling’ Chef Looks Forward to Magic Box of Goodies It’s just as well chef Bryn Lewis is a laid back character. It is a given that whatever he produces for Celebrate Gisborne will be superb, but he often doesn’t know just what his ingredients will be until just before the event. “It will be like a big magic box,” says the head chef from The Vines @ Bushmere where the event is being held. “People very generously donate food, so while we know we will have plenty of meat and seafood, exactly what it will be is a mystery until closer the time. I do know however, that it is always seasonal, fresh and local, so that makes it very easy to work with.” Celebrate Gisborne will feature four courses – canapes to start, followed by an entree, main and dessert. Bryn has been in the food industry for 30 years . . . and he still loves it. “Many chefs like strict planning, but I prefer shooting from the hip and a whole lot of freestyling,” he says. Bryn will also be auctioned off to cook a degustation dinner for a lucky bidder. The Vines @ Bushmere is known for its fab food and lovely surrounds. Vines owner Melissa Murphy says she Br yn has been a solid supporter of Hospice Tairawhiti for years and this is the second Celebrate she Le wi s has hosted. “I think Hospice do a wonderful job,” she says. “You just never know when you may need to call on the organisation for help yourself.” She knows her chef team of Bryn, Daryl Wilson and Paul Walker will produce something spectacular.“The food will be amazing, with some very special courses.” ‘Top Drawer’ Chardy Wins the Day Poverty Bay Wine proprietor Klaus Sorensen is purring . . . his 2016 Le Pont Chardonnay has just been given the five star nod from acclaimed wine writer Michael Cooper. And it is a fitting accolade. The grapes for the star-struck drop came from the old Judd Estate Vineyard at Patutahi which, for the past 50 years, has been run by Maurice Judd. The 2016 vintage was his last. The 2014 and 2015 Le Pont Chardonnay each garnered C h ri s H four-and-a-half stars from Michael Cooper, so the team was keen to go that little step further. “Not many Gisborne chardonnays can make that claim,” says Klaus of the five star t, K un accolade. la u “It seems fitting the last wine to be produced from his last of 50 vintages should win five sS stars.” or Five stars rank equivalent to a gold medal. “It proves that Gisborne can produce the most stylish se en n of chardonnays and compete with anywhere in New Zealand or overseas. I am just thrilled for an dM Maurice and for our wine maker Chris Hunt – both of whom have not really received the acclaim au ri c e they deserve over the years.” Jud d Klaus does not enter wine competitions, preferring instead to send wines to Michael for evaluation. “He is our yard stick.” It is this top drop that Klaus has donated to Celebrate Gisborne. “We are very happy to support Hospice,” he says. “It is a tremendous charity.” He started in the wine industry 10 years ago when he bought Bridge Estate. He has recently sold the cellar door and vineyard but will continue to produce wine with a special emphasis on “top drawer” Gisborne chardonnay. Bushmere Estate For Bushmere Estate Wines, it is a privilege to support Hospice Tairawhiti in its major fund raising event for the year. “It is a most deserving charity, which gives back to the community in a time of emotional need,” say David and Shona Egan. “We are delighted to welcome you all with a glass of our just released Bushmere Estate 2017 Amelia Rose – a delicate fresh, fruity sparkling rose made from two of Italy’s finest red wine grapes, sangiovese and montepulciano.” The wine is named in honour of their winemaker Amelia Riwai and is finished in an off-dry style with hints of cranberry and wild strawberries. “Enjoy summer in a bottle.” Da vi d Eg an te m ord… nI io A u ct
3 Artist Supporting Sponsors Peggy Ericson… m ElectriNET Ite n A u ctio ElectriNET, as a member of the Horizon Energy Group, has never wavered in its commitment to the community, and particularly to Hospice Tairawhiti. In 2017, ElectriNET committed to supporting the local organisation for a further three years. Regional manager Barry Atkinson, a recently appointed Member of the NZ Order of Merit (MNZM), has long been a supporter of Hospice and the wonderful work they do in the community. “We are thrilled with Horizon Energy Group’s continued support of Hospice Tairawhiti,” says Barry. “It fits well within the Group culture to support organisations in the communities we live in. Providing that final care for patients and the support that is needed by families at that time is so important.” Horizon Energy Group chief executive Ajay Anand said the substantial community sponsorship the Group commits to are a natural extension of this and a testament to their conviction. “The success of our business directly impacts the level of positive effect we can have on our communities and the environment. The Group has a strong commitment to making a positive Barry Atkinson difference in our community through sponsorship,” says Ajay. To further support Hospice Tairawhiti, and Celebrate Gisborne, ElectriNET’s Bridgette Penny has again committed time and resources to assist with the organisation of Celebrate Gisborne. BK Agency Bronwyn Kay is passionate about helping people . . . whether that be finding a new house or supporting the community. Hospice Tairawhiti is the main charity of her boutique real estate company Bronwyn Kay Agency. The company recently branched out into Hawke’s Bay where again, it is supporting Hospice. She was introduced to Hospice 15 years ago when her mother was dying from a very rare cancer. It opened her eyes to a team of angels – those who step in to help others when they most need it. “I was incredibly grateful to those involved with Hospice who gave my mother such compassionate and wonderful 24-hour care in her home,” says Bronwyn. “I would like other people to have that same care.” Her company is also one of the main sponsors for the Annual Night of Laughs. “Hospice we feel is something that touches every family at some stage . . . we will all die and it is nice to know there is someone there who will help care for you.” Her company is about to enter its 10th year as an independent boutique agency. The 23-strong team is enjoying a very strong market share, particularly in the high end and coastal properties . Bronwyn Kay . . much of that driven by Bronwyn’s 36 years experience in the industry. Three Rivers Medical Supporting Hospice Tairawhiti’s Celebrate Gisborne was a no-brainer for the team at Three Rivers Medical. Managing partner Dr Tom James says the organisation aligns with the business’ own values of continuing comprehensive competent care in the community. “We didn’t hesitate at all,” says Tom. “It is hard for the hospice service to rely so heavily on funding through grants and donations while providing such a vital service.” Three Rivers Medical were also on board for the last big Celebrate in 2016. The business works in close partnership with Hospice Tairawhiti, knowing that patients requiring the service will have the highest standard of care. As a purpose-built integrated health care centre, Three Rivers houses general practitioners, a pharmacy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation services, a podiatrist, a dietician, mole mapping, radiology, a general surgeon, and visiting specialists in urology and fertility treatment. Artist 4 on… Cris Morrel… Au The Gisborne Herald io ct n Ite m Hospice Tairawhiti’s service of providing vital care to the people of Gisborne make it an essential part of the region for those at The Gisborne Herald. “It provides care to those facing challenges and heartache,” says Herald managing director Michael Muir. “It is a mostly-volunteer organisation that is doing a great job in the community.” He has heard first hand of how essential the service is. “Readers and families connected with The Herald have shared stories with us that re-enforce the value of the good work Hospice Tairawhiti does. It is important that this work is recognised and supported.” The Gisborne Herald has served the district since 1874 with news and advertising that can be trusted. “We support Hospice Tairawhiti and encourage you to recognise its importance and help it Celebrate Gisborne, so the hospice team can continue to serve Tairawhiti so well.” Liam Beattie Gisborne Surgical Associates General and oesophago-gastric surgeon Dr Peter Stiven has practices in both the public and private sector. It is an area of medicine he is very passionate about, particularly weight loss and reflux surgery. He hails from Central Otago but has spent time in Australia on an ANZGOSA fellowship in upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, followed by work in out back Australia and East Timor. Hospice is a service he is more than happy to support. “I recognise the need for it,” he says. “I am keen to support it because of that unmet need.” He has been in Gisborne for four years, and in private practice here for three. One of the highlights of moving to the East Coast for Peter is the extensive hunting and fishing to be done. “I love it here.” He now works both at Gisborne Hospital and from his private practice at Three Rivers Medical where he specialises in laparoscopic surgery, gall bladder surgery, endoscopy and skin cancers. Dr Peter Stiven J.A. RUSSELL LTD The team at J.A. Russell Ltd are proud to be involved with Celebrate Gisborne. Branch manager Hugo McGuinness says their support of Hospice Tairawhiti is driven by simple reasoning. “Hospice is such a wonderful organisation, run by professional and compassionate people. It’s an enormous asset for Gisborne and it’s a pleasure for us to extend our sincere support to this worthwhile cause.” Established in 1951, J.A. Russell is a privately owned New Zealand electrical wholesale business that purchased Swanson Electrical in 2017. The company has 680 staff across 72 branches servicing the cities and provincial towns of New Zealand. National operations manager, Jeff Woodward says the team is excited to be in the “beautiful” city of Gisborne. “We will be working very hard around the East Cape to prove our brand.” Hugo McGuinness J.A. Russell Ltd operates around the same values that Swanson Electrical had. “Our valued staff work hard every day for our trade customers by providing quality and compliant electrical solutions,” says Hugo. These days providing compliant electrical product is demanded by the trade and of course their customers. “We can be trusted to provide that every step of the way.”
5 Supporting Sponsors New Zealand General Surgery and Medical It is fitting New Zealand General Surgery and Medical are a key sponsor of Hospice Tairawhiti’s Celebrate fundraiser. Specialist and company director Mr Rick Cirolli says by supporting Hospice they are in turn supporting the final journey for some of their own patients and the wider community. “This is a valuable service for Gisborne,” says Rick. His business is a multi-specialist centre offering quick access to specialist medical care. “We provide a unique combination of health services,” says business manager Nicola Evans, who has also been a volunteer for Hospice. NZGS has grown its expertise in the gold standard laser treatment of varicose veins so patients don’t require general anaesthesia or need to take time off work. The company has invested in one of the most advanced digital mole scanning equipment allowing prompt diagnosis of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Laparoscopic gall bladder, hernia and anti-reflux procedures, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, cystoscopy and some urology are also done at NZGS. The wider team, include general medicine Dr Richard Moore, clinic nurse Sarah Briant, pelvic Rick Cirolli floor physio Margie Humphreys, vascular sonographer Bronwen Allen, phebologist Dr Karen Parker and dietitian Christina Cullen. Rick says the team is honoured to support Hospice. “We are a team of medical practitioners who are passionate about our fields of expertise,” says Rick. “Health awareness and prevention is an integral part of our business.” Character Roofing A little fate may have led Pete Claffey into the roofing industry, but it all worked out for the best as now he is about to celebrate a decade of his business Character Roofing. The building industry is in his blood but when he left school he was headed to a flooring company to start an apprenticeship. That fell over and he heard a roofing company was hiring. He got the job and the rest is history. Au His work saw him establish his first company quite young and then taken him to Hawaii, Tauranga io ct and right back to his hometown to start Character Roofing. These days he runs a very busy operation. “Business is booming,” he says. “There are 60-odd builders in town and just three roofing companies.” Pete was more than happy to be a sponsor for Celebrate. “It is good cause,” he says. “You never know when you will end up in a position like that and it is nice to know there are people who are there for you.” Pete also convinced his brother Phil, who owns Character Building, to come on as a smaller Pete Claffey sponsor. Eastland Group Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd says his team is proud to be supporting Hospice Tairawhiti this year. “Eastland Group is an integral part of the community, and we take that responsibility seriously,” says Matt. “For us, it’s a privilege to join in this unique celebration of what makes Gisborne such a special place to live and work.” Eastland Group is Gisborne born and bred. They’re the business behind the businesses powering the local economy, and their people help to keep the region’s vital infrastructure running. Eastland Network keeps the lights on. Eastland Port continues to break export records. Gisborne Airport is a vital gateway to our region. Recently, they opened Electric Village in Gladstone Road – New Zealand’s first ever community- focused energy hub. Eastland Group returns millions of dollars each year to their sole shareholder, Eastland Community Trust, for the future benefit of everyone in Tairawhiti. They also sponsor a number of organisations and events; ones that make a real difference to the people in our region. Matt Todd “Hospice Tairawhiti touches the lives of so many families in so many ways,” Matt says. “They offer care and kindness in the most difficult of times. We’re proud to support them and their important work.”

7 Clothing Designer Sheryl May… Trio United in Support Three women from three different backgrounds all joined intrinsically through their art and their long-term support of Hospice Tairawhiti. International clothes designer Sheryl May and artists Cris Morrell and Peggy Ericson have each put forward a special piece for the Celebrate Gisborne auction. For Peggy, her clay tangata whenua figures represent the strength and beauty of the land we occupy. “There is not a speck of Maori blood in me but I am always drawn to all things Maori,” she says. “I feel a connection, and it is such a big part of why I love Gisborne so much.” Her reasoning for supporting Celebrate and Hospice Tairawhiti is quite simple. “I support it because of what they give to families in their last few weeks or ay days. It means you can die surrounded by what you love.” r yl M Sheryl has chosen a digitally printed shirt dress from her Devotion theme, S he featuring a large peach rose and doves. “The autumn/winter 2018 collection a nd encompasses all the things we love,” says Sheryl. “I am inspired by what I see when I travel, and then digitally design the prints to be printed in the UK.” She s on has plenty of admiration for those who work with hospice. ric yE “It is a very brave thing to do, to help people through a very difficult time. gg This is something I can do to contribute. The artist is Cr of three decades has a personal tie to Hospice Tairawhiti and is always happy to support the organisation. “Those who work with hospice are certainly very special,” says Cris. “Where would we be without them?” A uc Spade Oak on ti Ite m It’s all about good grapes and winemaking at Spade Oak. The award-winning boutique Gisborne label is donating its 2014 Vigneron Syrah for the Celebrate dinner. It’s a drop modelled on a traditional hermitage from France’s Rhone Valley and is dry, bold, complex and muscular. “When the Cubans started rolling cigars, they had wines like this in mind,” says winemaker and co-owner Steve Voysey. He has long been a star in the world of New Zealand winemaking – not afraid to miss a vintage if the grapes aren’t up to scratch. “Spade Oak wines are what I drink,” he says. “We like to offer a little bit more than the average at a very good price. I like to expose just how good New Zealand wine can be.” And he wishes people would be a little more adventurous with their wine drinking to make the most of that. Diamond in a glass Showcase Jewellers’ Susan Kirikino and McCann’ics’ Robbie and Karen McCann have joined forces to bring the very popular Diamond in a Glass to Celebrate. Organiser Bridgette Penny says this exciting Diamond in a Glass concept allows those at the event the n Ite m support to support Celebrate Gisborne in a fun way. “And there is the added advantage of being the proud owner of a gorgeous ring – who doesn’t want that?
