Fold (PNF) Toenail Anatomy
Keratinized Proximal Nail Plate Matrix is the area at the root of the nail plate where

Eponychium Proximal nail fold (PNF) is the entire flap of skin
Stratum Layer covering the matrix. Extending from the base of
Corneum Hyponychium the plate to the end of the distal phalanx.
Eponychium (Latin for upon the nail) is the thin
Nail Bed layer of living tissue lining the underside of the PNF.
Matrix
Stem cells found in the matrix, produce new nail cells
Distal Phalanx while those in the eponychium continually secretes
(Phalange) new cuticle tissue.
Cuticle is the tightly bonded, dead tissue shed by the
eponychium to form a bacteria-blocking barrier/seal.
Keratinized PNF is a specialized tissue that thickens/

protective armor shield- resisting attack by infectious
organism or potentially harmful chemicals.

Diabetic Foot Care...Gentleness Is The Key
The key concern when working with diabetic feet is the loss of sensation
as a result of reduced blood flow to the extremities. The diabetic client will
have difficulty noticing water that is too hot or feeling over aggressive
action. Gentle care and awareness are needed.
With care and proper precautions, diabetics may enjoy safe professional
salon pedicures. Make sure their diabetes is well-controlled with no signs
of infection, cuts/abrasions, or sores on the feet. If any of these symptoms
are visable, refer them to a health care professional. Avoid using hot water
(a good temperature is 90-95F/32-35C) and do not soak more than 3-4
minutes. Be careful using using files and nippers. Even minor injuries may
result in major complications, including life threatening infections.
It is important to trim nail plates straight across and NOT too short. Then
smooth with a fine abrasive nail file, while avoiding cutting the corners of
the nail plate to help prevent ingrown nails.
Never cut the living skin around the nail plate, nor should you EVER push
back the living skin at the base of the nail (aka proximal nail fold), since this
may increase the risk of serious infection1.

Carefully smooth, but never completely remove a callus. They are required
for proper foot protection. Nail professionals should know which of their
clients are diabetic and should treat their skin with extraordinary care.

Psoriasis and Feet
PSORIATIC TOENAILS
Psoriasis is a non-transmissible autoimmune disease affecting the skin.
Psoriasis causes the immune system to attack otherwise healthy skin and
drives the skin to produce new cells at a greatly accelerated rate, leaving
the skin looking dry, scaly, often with patchy areas that may be overly
sensitive and painful. Such patches/lesions can flare out of control if the
skin is even slightly injured. 1 2 3
When performing a pedicure on a client with psoriasis, use much greater
care and caution since even minor injuries can cause new lesions to occur
and trigger psoriasis related arthritis resulting in pain, stiffness and
inflammation in the damaged area. As with diabetes, extraordinary care

Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails occur when the edge/corner of the nail plate grows into
the skin to cause redness, swelling and pain. The big toe is the most
suspectable to this type of injury and is more likely in older clients. The key
to avoiding ingrown nails is to cut the nail straight across, avoiding “angling”
the corners. This will allow the nail to grow out normally.
Nail technicians should NEVER attempt to remove ingrown toenails,
instead the client must be referred to a medical professional for any
necessary treatment.

Proper and Safe Callus Treatment
A foot callus is an area of skin that has become thick and hard, usually
due to repeated friction, pressure, or irritation. A callus has only one
purpose, to protect underlying tissues from injury and infection. Calluses
are normal, harmless and provide important protective benefits, typically
occurring on the heal or outer side of the big toe.
It’s important to never to cut, dissolve or shave calluses from the foot. Injury
and infection become much more likely because the exposed skin is much
more susceptible to new blisters and/or infections.
Complete removal of a callus is considered a medical procedure that
should NEVER be performed by nail technicians. Calluses should only be
smoothed and never removed. A thin layer of callus left on the foot
is healthy and needed.

Foot or Toenail Infections are Risky Business!
Infections of the feet and toenail can be life threatening, especially for
those with diabetes and/or psoriasis. Infections can easily spread from
one client to another in the salon setting, endangering healthy clients.
In many countries, it is forbidden for nail technicians to treat any type of
client infection, and we recommend you never attempt to do so. Instead,
suspected infections MUST be referred to a qualified medical professional.
Avoid cosmetic products that claim they can treat infections...these are
illegal medical claims.

Toenail Onycholysis
Onycholysis is a common medical condition characterized by the
detachment of the nail plate from the underlying nail bed. Onycholysis
usually starts at the free edge and/or side walls and may increase in size
over time. The most common cause is physical trauma, e.g. pressure
from shoes that are too narrow or too short, excessive nail filing, friction
burns on the nail bed caused by e-files or overly aggressive cleaning
underneath the free edge.
The hyponychium is the skin seal located underneath the extended free
edge of the nail plate. Trauma to this area can loosen the attachment
between the nail plate and bed to create an empty air space between
them. Infectious organisms can more easily infect the nail bed within
these spaces.
Onycholysis cannot be reversed and the nail plate can NOT be
reattached by any known means. However, eliminate the source of the
trauma and eventually the nail plate will grow out to reestablish the
hyponychium seal to eliminate this medical condition. Depending on
the severity of the condition, it may take 4-9 months or longer before
the slowly growing toenail can grow out normally.

White Spots- Internal vs. External
Three types of white spots are found on the toenail, and each has a
completely different cause. Understanding these causes can make
these spots easier to identify. Once the source of the damage is
eliminated, these white-spots will grow out.
The first type of white spots is those which form “inside” the nail plate
and are the result of minor damage to the nail matrix. It is a myth that
these are caused by any vitamin deficiency or health problems.
It is important to note these spots are softer than the surrounding
areas and excessive filing should be avoided. Type 1
The second type appears on the “surface” of the nail plate. These are

Certain types of fungal nail infection called WSO (white superficial
onychomycosis) can occur on toenails and can mimic the appearance
of surface damage, but usually they have a distinctive fuzzy or fur-like

Even with existing clients, it’s best to start with a review of any potential foot health issues
when they book their pedicure appointment. Ask if they have diabetes, psoriasis, or other
conditions that may interfere with their feet, including wounds like cuts, ulcers, abrasions,
or other areas of broken skin. If your client has any visible foot health issues, refer them to
their doctor or podiatrist.

Soak, Soothe, Trim & Smooth
a. Remove any polish from the toenails
b. Add 1-2 pumps of SOAK-A-LYPTUS™ into your footbath, then fill with warm water.
For diabetic clients, soak no more than 3-4 min at approximately 95F/35C
RELEAF Platinum Pedicure Upgrade: Add 1 teaspoon of AU Drench along with SOAK-A-LYPTUS™
c. Submerge your client’s feet in the water and let them soak for at least 4-6 minutes, although you
can let your client relax for longer if they wish.
d. Remove their feet from the bath, gently towel dry, leaving the skin damp.
RELEAF Platinum Pedicure Upgrade: Warm two eyedroppers of CBD ELIXIR in the palms of your hands
and massage into your client’s feet and legs. The ELIXIR should quickly absorb into their skin within
2-3 minutes.
e. Trim and file the free edge of their toenails. After trimming, spray CUTI-CAL on to the toe cuticles and
the heels of their feet. Spray generously on any callused areas.
f. Allow the CUTI-CAL Treatment to soak in for approximately 2 minutes, then carefully push back the
proximal nail fold (cuticle) and remove any lose skin.
g. Use the LOSIN’ IT FOOT FILE™ to gently smooth down the calluses and dry skin. You can reapply CUTI-CAL

a. Use approximately 2/3 teaspoon of DADI’® SCRUB GOLD per foot, and gently massage it onto your client’s
feet and legs. Pay extra attention to the heel and sole of the feet.
b. If your client wishes, wrap their feet and legs in a warm, damp towel and allow the heat to help the
DADI’® SCRUB GOLD penetrate and relax your client’s feet and legs (optional).
c. Use the towel to remove the undissolved DADI’® SCRUB GOLD and then dip into the footbath to remove
the rest.
d. Start with approximately 1/2 teaspoon of DADI’® LOTION GOLD, massage your client’s feet and legs until
their skin absorbs the lotion. Take your time and focus on helping your client relax.

a. Carefully cleanse the nail plates and toe cuticles using Cinnatize™ Nail Surface Cleanser to provide an
oil-free surface of the nail plate and increase adhesion. Apply the selected polish.
FINISHING TOUCHES
After polishing, apply Dadi’® Oil over the nail polish and cuticles. Complete the pedicure by spraying
FAMOUS FINISH™ to the toes and tops of the feet. FAMOUS FINISH™ cools and conditions the feet, creating the
perfect end to the perfect pedicure. Use a towelette to remove any excess moisture or oils from the bottom
of the foot to prevent slipping.
