The Second Sunday of Easter April 11, 2021
WELCOME The Reverend Dr. Violet Lee OPENING SEQUENCE The Reverend Dr. Violet Lee Mighty God, in whom we know the power of redemption, you stand among us in the shadows of our time. As we move through every sorrow and trial of this life, uphold us with knowledge of the final morning when, in the glorious presence of your risen Son, we will share in his resurrection, redeemed and restored to the fullness of life and forever freed to be your people. Amen. OPENING HYMN Morning Has Broken Text: Elenor Farjeon; Music: Gaelic tune Please join in singing or humming the hymn: Morning has broken like the first morning; Blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word. Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven, Like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, Sprung in completeness where his feet pass. Mine is the sunlight! mine is the morning Born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise every morning, God's recreation of the new day! PRAYER FOR THE DAY Wil Davis Living God, long ago, faithful women proclaimed the good news of Jesus' resurrection, and the world was changed forever. Teach us to keep faith with them, that our witness may be as bold, our love as deep, and our faith as true. Amen. Silent Prayer 2
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Winona Green Loving Christ, Open the eyes of our faith that we may behold the work of your redemption. Open our minds and hearts to receive you, Lord: your resurrection glory, your light everlasting. May this time of worship, reflection and celebration be a worthy response to your love and your sacrifice for us. Grant us the courage to live as witnesses to your resurrection. Risen Christ, be light in our world. Amen. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS 4:32-35 Winona Green Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE Christ the Lord is Ris'n Today Lewis Walden, treble Miles Vender-Wilson, violin A READING FROM THE FIRST BOOK OF JOHN 4:32-35 The Reverend Nicole Armstrong We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3
The word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE Christ the Lord is Ris'n Today Lewis Walden, treble Miles Vender-Wilson, violin MESSAGE The Reverend Dr. Violet Lee MUSIC The Lily of the Valley African-American spiritual; arr. William Dawson The Christ Church Choir INVITATION TO GIVE CoCo Cheng PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Robbie Mathews, Winona Green, Mel Gray, Erica Fraser, Raymond DePaul O God, your Son remained with his disciples after his resurrection, teaching them to love all people as neighbors. As his disciples in this age, we offer our prayers on behalf of the universe in which we are privileged to live and our neighbors with whom we share it. Light of the world, shine upon us. A silence is kept. Open our hearts to your power; moving around us and between us and within us, until your glory is revealed in our love of both friend and enemy, in communities transformed by justice and compassion, and in the healing of all that is broken. Light of the world, shine upon us. A silence is kept. Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty, and restore all things in glory through the victory of Jesus Christ. We pray that, wherever your image is still disfigured 4
by poverty, sickness, selfishness, war and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ may appear in justice, love, and peace, to the glory of your name. Light of the world, shine upon us. A silence is kept. Holy God, you have called us to follow in the way of your risen Son, and to care for those who are our companions, not only with words of comfort, but with acts of love. Seeking to be true friends of all, we offer our prayers on behalf of the church and the world. Light of the world, shine upon us. A silence is kept. Guide us in the path of discipleship, so that, as you have blessed us, we may be a blessing for others, bringing the promise of the kingdom near by our words and deeds. Light of the world, shine upon us. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us in the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. CLOSING HYMN Thine Be the Glory arr. Robert Powell The Christ Church Choir, Bell Choir and Instruments Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where Thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won. 5
Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb. Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let His church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting. Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won. No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life!! Life is nought without Thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conqu'rors, through Thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above. Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won. BLESSING May the Love of Christ, Open the eyes of our faith that we may behold the work of redemption. May the Joy of Christ, Open our minds and hearts to receive the resurrection glory and light everlasting. Now go and serve the Lord with gladness. Amen. Christ Church Staff: The Rev. FAITH FORUM RETURNS- Monday nights 6:30pm, April 12th- June 14th. Have you ever asked the questions- “What shapes a Christian understanding of justice? Can there be more than one truth? How have we related God to justice in the past?” This search for justice, for truth, and for God is not new. In fact, as humans we have sought the answers to these questions for millennia. As Christians we are part of a tradition that takes these questions seriously. In our bible we carry ancient witness to these claims in the books we call “the prophets.” Among these books is the book of Amos- the oldest and first prophet in our biblical canon. Join us this spring as we walk through the prophet Amos’ words. Each week we will dig into Amos’ claims of justice/injustice, the depiction of who God was to the Ancient Near East people, and how we might learn from these powerful words. All are welcome, no matter your age or experience with scripture! For more questions, email Rev. Nicole Armstrong at nicole@christchurchnyc.org. CONVERSATIONS ON RACE- Tuesday, April 20th at 6:30pm.
