7th Edition - Route Details The Route The Race starts in Pune, the city of cycles, and finishes in Goa, on the sea shore. Set on the Deccan Plateau, the route follows the Sahyadri Range, which defines the western edge of the Deccan, finally dropping through dense forests that cover the cliffs of the Escarpment, into the Konkan as it heads to the Indian Ocean. Each year the route is modified to adjust to road conditions. This year the route goes straight on NH4 till Belgaum after which the route heads to Dandeli via Khanapur and Ramnagar. From Dandeli the route heads to Karwar via Anshi Tiger Reserve and then hugs the coastline till you reach Bogmalo, Goa. Route Details have been finalized after a physical inspection of road conditions conducted by the team in early October. Given the unseasonal continuation of monsoon rains we believe the road conditions are a little worse than what we examined, but not terribly so. Description / Cautions The Start Venue for this edition is The Cliff Restaurant and Club, at Forest Trails Bhugaon, Paranjape Schemes (Construction) Ltd which has hosted the start of the last 3 editions. From there one heads steeply downhill and on to Chandni chowk to join NH4, heading south towards Bangalore. The first climb to Katraj tunnel is followed by a flat, slight downhill until one crosses the Nira River at Shirwal at @60 km. While this stretch usually offers an opportunity to do very good time, this year there are bad road sections, under construction and service roads and participants are cautioned. The road improves after Shirwal, and climbs up Khambatki ghat which has some construction work, a 3.5 km ascent with a short descent on the other side. The route continues south over rolling terrain with one short climb after Nippani. At Belgaum you leave the highway, ensure you follow the directions. Navigate through Belgaum to Infinity Studio a Bike Shop that will host the control point of the race, through the night. The route heads out of Belgaum towards Khanapur and Ramnagar, after which the route is continuously rolling terrain, through dense forest until you descend the ghat. Most of you will experience this at night and will have fog, damp and wildlife to consider and be cautious about. Participants and Crew are warned to be very careful, maintaining direct follow and keep riders in the lights of the vehicle at ALL times.
After the Ganeshgudi climb, the route turns of the Karwar rd to go to Dandeli where participants turn around to return to the Karwar rd. The route continues to be rolling through dense forest and all cautions must be maintained. Finally the route descends from the Deccan Plateau to the Konkan. Participants MUST use extreme caution while descending, do not speed, especially at night and ensure you remain within the vehicle lights. Crew are advised to keep very close to the riders. After reaching NH66, participants are required to head south for Karwar across the bridge for the Control point. Turning around at Karwar bridge, the route heads north to Goa, navigation through Margao. Turning off the highway for the Airport, one heads past BITS Pilani and turns left from the Airport road towards Bogmalo, the road heads down again to end on the beach, at the finish venue for the Race which is John’s Seagull Bar n Restaurant, Bogmalo. With great beaches, fresh sea food, and most importantly… a low tax on beer, Goa is a big holiday destination and Inspire India is happy to welcome all Participants, Crew and Officials to the legendary after party… The Deccan Clifhang’ov’er! The Race was shifted to November in 2014, and is has been run annually since then. It took 3 years to develop the Ultracycling Community in India before Inspire India introduced a much longer, multi-day race to prepare racers for RAAM, the Ultra Spice Race. First conducted in Jan 2017 it is also an annual event that is timed around the Indian Republic Day weekend of 26th January. This year the race will have a solo unsupported category in 1750 km. The third race to be introduced to our Calendar was the Great Himalayan Ultra which is held Aug- Sept, during the short window of good weather in the high reaches of Ladhak. After 2 successful editions of a 600KM RAAM Qualifer, a longer 900 KM Extreme version may be in the cards for 2020! The Dunes 6-12-24 HR Time Trial Format race is yet to be conducted. Another venue is being considered for this format… Details will be announced soon! www.inspire-india.in
