The Paw The Paw Print is a periodic publication of Haven Humane Society, dedicated to a North State with no more homeless pets. Print Winter 2019 A WordbyFrom the Clinic Dr. Cyanna Howden As we wrap up 2018, it feels as though the year went by in a blink of an eye. Of course, nobody could have anticipated that the North State would be ravaged by not one but two of the largest disasters in California history. Although it brought with it many hardships, it also acted to bring us together as an organization and as a community. Working together throughout the year, we were able to successfully manage an evacuation center for over 600 animals, provide medical care and rehab for over 30 burned cats, complete over 5,000 spays and neuters, treat over 30 shelter dogs with heartworm, and assist with care for the Camp Fire animals. We were able to fundraise so that, with the help of Dr Correia at VCA Asher, several animals received much needed fracture repairs. For the first time in my 12 years at Haven, every animal that entered our doors that could be treated and saved, was. It is because of your amazing support and generosity that we are able to continue to grow Bellamy received heartworm and improve as an organization so that no animal is left behind. Thank you! treatment and was adopted in September. The Art of Fundraising by Jennifer Haynes Fundraising is one of those necessary tasks that enable great causes and scares people silly — both at the same time. Even when needs are great, asking for money is a daunting task. Fundraising begins with good relationships. Good relationships are essential for success: between board members and staff, and staff and donors. Nonprofits rely on the generosity of donors, though giving patterns have changed over time. Today, we see donors making more targeted gifts in an effort to maximize their impact. Program-specific giving attracts three times as many supporters as requests for support for general operations. When we posted on GoFundMe.com the story of Jiggs who needed a fractured leg repaired after being hit by a car, our supporters raised $2,000 in 3 days. Because we raised the money so quickly, Jiggs escaped amputation and the leg was repaired. Social media crowd-funding provides immediate communication between those in need and those who want to help, so we can heal our patients without delay. You want to make a tangible difference and know exactly how you’re contributing to important, lasting change. A long- time dream of ours, and perhaps yours, was to build a kitten nursery, staffed 24 hours a day, to save the little ones that were abandoned. Together, we did it! We’ll be having an open house in the spring. We invite donors to see how their money is being used through tours of our facility, and presentations at our events. We listen to and interact with our donors, discovering their passions, and connecting through our love for animals. A simple phone call from our staff or a board member lets you know how you made a difference and can be so rewarding to both of us. People give to make a difference, and that’s what you’ve done. In October, we mailed a letter that featured Babette, a black lab mix who had been hit by a car and suffered two broken back legs. We requested donations be made to our Misty Lee Fund for Babette’s surgery cost. Our request was met with great generosity and Babette had her surgery at VCA Asher and is now recovering in foster care. It’s our responsibility to keep you informed about the great things your donation has allowed us to accomplish, and there are many. The staff at Haven is very proud of their work to save animals, and your donation is behind every animal we save.

Animal Regulation by Lt. Catie Huff It was a dark, cold, rainy winter morning when I was the first to arrive at Haven for work. I opened the gates to the facility, as I do every day, and pulled in to park. As my headlights shined through the parking lot, I noticed a black heap of something amongst a rain puddle. Not really thinking anything of it, I parked my car assuming it was a bag that had blown into the parking lot, but was I mistaken. As I approached, I discovered the “black heap” was a Labrador Retriever puppy clinging to life. I quickly gathered him up and brought him into the building. As I laid him on the exam table I noticed the pads of his feet were bloody and he had broken nails. He was unresponsive, soaking wet, and shivering. Knowing that our veterinary staff did not come on duty for another thirty minutes, my first priority was to get this little guy warm and dry. As he began to warm up he started having seizures, his little paws paddling the air. This explained how his pads and nails became raw from the surface of the parking lot. I was praying he would hang on until medical help arrived. As soon as our clinic staff arrived, I rushed the four-month old pup to the professionals, who administered emergency aid. The puppy continued to have seizures throughout the day. The clinic staff worked tirelessly the entire day to save him. At this point his prognosis was very guarded, but I knew he was in good hands and hoped he would improve by morning. As soon as I arrived to work the next morning I immediately went to check on him. I was elated as I opened the door and saw him sitting up and very alert in his kennel. As I visited with him, I noticed something was “off ” with him. Later the veterinarian determined his sight was impaired and he was possibly deaf also. The good news was the seizures had seemed to have subsided. This little guy would just need more time to rest and recover, so an employee took the pup into foster care in her home. The pup, named Stevie, has been in his foster home for some time now. Stevie has been shown unconditional love with his foster family and is recovering rapidly. He makes improvements daily and even seems to have gained back his vision. We aren’t exactly sure how Stevie got to Haven Humane Society in the middle of the night, but he came to the right place for help. He is a miracle pup and a survivor!! Stevie is still looking for his loving forever home. Who says money can’t buy love? For a small adoption fee you could have all the love of a dog as wonderful as Stevie! Volunteer Spotlight: Haven Sets Example for Programs Robin Muehlhauser lives in Davis, but she volunteered as a counselor at Camp Love A Pet last summer because her son was a camper 10 years ago, and Camp Love A Pet changed his life. He came out of his shell and engaged with the world. He excelled so much, he went on to become a Camp counselor in later years. Because of her son’s experiences with Camp Love A Pet, and because Robin is involved with many local rescues in the Davis area, she requested to tag a long at Haven’s Camp Love A Pet so she could learn how to start a similar program in her neck of the woods. Robin has always fostered dogs and figures she must be a good person for the job, as all of her “packs,” which include her own dogs, always get along splendidly. She delights in her dog packs, no matter the configuration. Now that she’s returned to Davis, she will contact her local shelters to determine their interest in hosting a similar camp. She will also need to contact the local agencies that deal with dogs in order to find like-minded people to staff the camp, as well as identify the dogs with whom the campers would be paired. She is formulating ideas and ways to get where she wants to go with this passion: “kids and dogs!” Thank you, Robin, for taking the time to come experience Camp Love A Pet yourself and for wanting to replicate the model in the Davis area. 4
SPONSOR A PET We hear it every day, “I wish I could take them all.” You can’t take them all; some cannot even take one. But you can still help a shelter pet get adopted by donating directly to its adoption fee. Reduced adoption fees help companion animals get adopted. To sponsor a pet, send a sponsor donation to Haven Humane Society, P.O. Box 992202, Redding, CA 96099-2202. Please include your name, address, and phone number. We will choose a dog or cat that needs a better chance at adoption.
