HOW SHIPPING COMPARES BUILDING THE FUTURE WITH OTHER TRANSPORT METHODS MSC’S ENVIRONMENTAL CO2 emissions by mode of transportation, CO2 g/km INITIATIVES Source: 3rd IMO GHG Study 2014 The MSC Group is continuously assessing the impact it may have on land, sea, and populations. The Group is investing extensively in the modernisation of port and terminal infrastructure to develop innovative transportation solutions, further expand its hinterland services and to become even more cost-efficient and environmentally sound. For instance, capacity utilisation, network optimisation, and efficiency are integral parts of MSC’s strategy to decrease CO2 emissions per cargo-ton/miles (expressed in ‘Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator’, EEOI). To reduce the fuel consumption of its fleet, MSC is enhancing and modernising vessels to achieve significant fuel reductions. For example, MSC estimates that container ship hull and Air: 560 g Road: 45 g Rail: 18 g Sea: 3 g propeller cleaning alone have resulted in a saving of 55,000 tons of fuel, with a consequent emissions reduction of 179 million kg CO2. A comprehensive retrofit programme is also underway to optimise vessel performance. The EEOI chart opposite illustrates MSC’s success in improving the efficiency of MSC FLEET CARBON EMISSIONS 2015-2018 the cargo fleet. Compared to 2015, our EEOI has improved by 17.52%. In EEOI = GR CO2/(TONS CARGO/MILES) addition, we are investing in larger, more efficient, greener ships featuring the latest in low emissions technology. In October 2017, MSC placed an order for 16,65 17.0 11 new 23,000+ TEU vessels (Ultra Large Container Vessels – ULCVs), setting a record for the world’s largest container capacity. MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING COMPANY Founded by Captain Gianluigi Aponte, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has been headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, since 1978. A world leader in container shipping, MSC has evolved from a one-vessel operation into a globally respected logistics business with 520 vessels and 47,000 staff. MSC’s wide range of operations covers 155 countries across five continents, where MSC provides timely delivery of goods and services to local communities, customers, and international business partners. The Company’s international headquarters supervise a worldwide network of offices with each having responsibility for commercial and operational activities in their respective countries. Over the years, MSC has invested in several initiatives, such as operational strategic alliances, and has further diversified its business-related activities. The Company has seen exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity, and now serves millions of customers globally, with a 365 days a year operation. Today, our focus remains true to our roots, building and retaining long-term trusted partnerships with customers of all size and scale. A MODERN, GREEN FLEET MSC operates one of the youngest fleets in the world. It represents a massive financial investment in modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly vessels. MSC invests in new technologies, systems, and processes with the aim of continuously improving the environmental performance and energy efficiency of its fleet. In January 2015, MSC introduced its flagship ‘Oscar Class’ (19,224 TEU) and in August 2019, the ‘Gülsün Class’ (23,756 TEU). These vessels set new records and became the world’s largest container ship at the time. One reason for continuing to invest in bigger ships is to increase efficiency by reducing the energy needed to transport each container, lowering both costs and CO2 emissions and improving profitability. This helps to protect the environment and ensures MSC is ahead of the curve in meeting new regulatory requirements. As well as bringing in newer vessels MSC has also been upgrading the fleet of owned and operated ships to the latest standards of safety and fuel efficiency in a programme that started in 2011, considerably reducing CO2 emissions. More than 250 ships have been retrofitted with energy-saving technologies.
