Water Spaniel
Competition
The Friends of the Irish Water Spaniel Club of America (IWSCA) offers a Top Ten event to showcase
excellence in the Irish Water Spaniel. This event provides special recognition to those Irish Water
Spaniels with the most outstanding records as well as their breeders, owners, and handlers.
The event will take place at the 2019 IWSCA National Specialty on a “trial basis” so its viability can
be evaluated.
This event is NOT an official IWSCA event, but rather is privately managed. It offers education for
breeders, exhibitors, fanciers and judges. The event offers all who attend a chance to view top
dogs in the breed. The Top Ten event provides an incentive for breeders to strive for excellence in
conformation, movement, structure and temperament.
After paying all associated costs of the event and setting aside money for possible future events, any
proceeds will be donated back to IWSCA and ear marked for Health Research.
Statistics and Eligibility:
Qualifying dogs are those ranked in the Top Ten (breed, National Owner-Handler Series [NOHS], and
all-breed) AKC rankings as of December 31 of the qualifying year(s) prior to the IWSCA National
Specialty. For the 2019 event, Top Ten (breed, NOHS, and all-breed) for the prior TWO calendar years
(rankings as of December 31, 2017 and December 31, 2018) will be invited to participate. Because
this event is offered on a “trial bases”, if it is not offered one year, the dogs who have qualified to
compete that year will be eligible the next time it is offered. (Note: Dogs ranked in the Top Ten (breed,
NOHS, and all-breed) in foreign countries are eligible. Proof of an individual’s Top Ten status must be
included with the entry - for example, a photo copy of a ranking listing, a letter, or certificate from
a foreign registry; or photo copy of a listing in a foreign publication would satisfy this requirement.)
OR
a Best in Specialty Show (BISS) Winner of the IWSCA National, IWSCA Regional, or Local Specialty
shows within the last 5 years prior to the year the Top Ten event is held. For example, for the 2019
Top Ten event, winners in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014 will qualify. (Note: International Specialty
Show winners are eligible. For example the winner of the Canadian National Specialty qualifies –
proof of win such as win photo or statement from CKC or other foreign registry must be included
with entry.)
OR
An All-Breed Best in Show (BIS) Winner or NOHS BIS winner within the last 5 years prior to the year
the Top Ten event is held. For example, for the 2019 Top Ten event, winners in 2018, 2017, 2016,
2015 and 2014 will qualify to enter. (Note: International All-Breed Best in Show winners are eligible.)
Because it is conceivable that a dog NOT ranked in the Top Ten could win BIS or NOHS BIS, proof of
win such as win photo must be included with entry.)
Qualifying dogs are based on point standing in breed (total of Irish Water Spaniels defeated) or all-
breed (total of dogs defeated) or NOHS as published by the American Kennel Club, counting on a
calendar year basis. Deceased qualifiers will be noted in the IWSCA Top Ten qualifiers list published
in the event catalog.

AKC and IWSCA at the time the invitations are extended AND at the time of the event.*
All dogs must be eligible at the time of the event to compete in AKC events.
Spayed bitches or neutered dogs that have been named among the final IWSCA Top Ten qualifiers
may compete in this event.
Invitations and Briefing Packet:
The IWSCA Top Ten qualifiers will be sent an invitation to participate in the event. (Those who qualify
via other means – including AKC NOHS - will need to request a packet.) There is an entry fee to be
returned with the entry form and other required information accompanying the invitation by the
noted deadline on the entry form.

Judges:
There will be three (3) judges for the Top Ten Event. There will be one judge from each of the following
three categories:
1 Breeder - an Irish Water Spaniel Breeder in good standing with the IWSCA and Home-Country
Kennel Club. The Breeder must not own or co-own a dog in the Top Ten competition.
2..AKC Multi-Breed Judge - a person approved by AKC to judge Irish Water Spaniels; not a breeder or
current owner of Irish Water Spaniels.
3. Professional Handler – a person in good standing with the AKC.
Catalogs/Programs:
A catalog is prepared exclusively for the Top Ten Event. They are available for sale just prior to the
scheduled starting time of the event and during the remainder of the IWSCA National week.
The catalog contains a page for each competitor, with photograph and text supplied by the dog’s
owner. The catalog also contains score sheets, judging procedures, and a profile of each judge.
2019 is the “trial event”, should the event continue, a page listing all of the previous winners, the
judges, and the year in which they won will be included.
Event Scheduling:
The Top Ten Event will be held during the IWSCA National Specialty week and prior to the National
Specialty Show.
The draw for armband numbers and the order of competition will be held at least one-half hour
before the beginning of the competition.
The people’s choice and the judge’s choice winner (e.g. overall winner) will NOT be announced until
the Annual Awards Banquet.
Prizes:
Participants: All exhibitors who have entered the IWSCA Top Ten Event will receive a commemorative
item that includes their dog’s name.
Winner: The judged overall winner will take home a rosette.
People’s Choice Award: At the same time as the Top Ten dogs are being judged, spectators can
participate as People’s Choice ringside judges, placing a vote for their top dog in the appropriate
ballot box provided. Votes are tallied at the end of the event and the winner of the People’s Choice
Award will be announced at the Annual Awards Banquet.

Event Procedures: Entrants and handlers will only be allowed to compete if at least one representative of the entrant attends the exhibitor briefing held at least 30 minutes prior to the event commencement. Exhibitor Briefing: 1. Check in with the Top Ten Committee 2. Receive armband 3. Receive instructions and order in which the participants will enter the ring 4 Participants will be given instructions regarding when to be ringside, where to wait, and specific ring/judging procedures Attire for the Top Ten Event: This event is considered to be a formal event and as such formal, gala type attire is absolutely encouraged to be worn at the event, both by attendees and handlers. Costuming or props of any kind, but not limited to, anything worn on the dog are prohibited. There shall be NO extraneous props for the handler, as well. Only exceptions are items supplied by the Top Ten or Show Committees to all handlers (i.e. a simple mask for the handler to wear in keeping with that year’s Top Ten theme.) This event is about showcasing the dogs and their road to this prestigious Top Ten event. The dogs themselves should be showcased alone in a manner similar to any other AKC conformation event. Judging Procedure: 1. After all Top Ten competitors are viewed in the ring as a group, each dog will be judged individually. Each dog, as determined in exhibition order, will enter the ring and pose for “First Impression.” Judges assign a score of 1-10 (10 being the highest) at this time to be used only in a case of tie points using the breed standard. The dog will then be moved down and back, and in a circle while all three judges watch, and the judges will score the dog for movement. The dog will then be examined and scored completely by the three judges, each judge touching and examining the dog as he/she sees fit. The dog will then circle the ring and exit. This process will be repeated until all dogs have been scored. 2 All dogs will be scored by each judge using the scale of points provided here-in, and based upon the AKC approved standard for the Irish Water spaniel. 3. Immediately following the completion of judging, the judges’ marked (but not tallied for total scores) sheets will be turned over to an independent and impartial person or persons to be tabulated. The scores for each dog, from each of the three judges, are added together, then divided by three (3) to determine the dog’s average score. 4. The winner will be determined on the basis of the average score of each dog. The score sheets and the identity of the winning dog will be given to the Top Ten Chairperson and kept secret until it is awarded at the National’s Awards Banquet. 5. In the event of a tie, the winner is determined by consulting the First Impression total. The dog with the highest First Impression total is declared the winner. The First Impression score is used ONLY to break a tie, and is not included in tabulating the average score. If there is still a tied score, the judge panel will meet to determine the winner. *Please Note: “In Good Standing” does NOT mean an exhibitor must be a “member” of AKC or IWSCA. It does mean “The state of an individual being current on any debts owed [AKC or IWSCA], any reporting requirements, or other obligations.” 4 • Top 10 Irish Water Spaniel Competition • MAY 2019

JAMES BRENNAN - IRISH WATER SPANIEL BREEDER James (Jim) Brennan first became interested in Irish Water Spaniels because he was looking for a canine hunting partner that had more personality than the labs that he’d been hunting with. In 1983, he acquired his first IWS through Terri Anderson - owner of BIS Ch. Mirkwood’s A Touch of Class and named her Jaybren’s Siobhan (call name - Sibby). Jim hunted and competed with her for the next 14 years and she had several litters, becoming the foundation for Jaybren Kennel. From Sibby’s very first litter, Jim chose to keep Aran. Sibby and Aran established quite a reputation for themselves in the hunting and show circles around the Norhwest. Both were very successful with many group placements and wins - establsihing themselves in the breed’s Top Ten. In addition to their show careers, Jim handled Sibby and Aran to their WCX certificates, Senior Hunter titles, Tracking, and UD titles. Both ran tests at the Master level but did not get the MH title. Jim was hooked. His next “heart dog” was Duncan, (Am/Can/ Int Ch Jaybren’s Donnchadh Donal SH CDX MX NAJ WCX (a Sibby Grandson), and he was Jim’s companion for 15 years. Following Duncan was “Jazzy” who he acquired from Greg Siner. Jazzy was a star in both the field and show ring, but when bred to Duncan, Jazzy proved her real “calling” was in the whelping box. Jazzy was not only a wonderful mother, but with Duncan’s help, produced not just one, BUT THREE TOP TEN BITCHES. Jim has been breeding IWS since the 1980s. He is a lifetime memeber of IWSCA. Jim says he is very honored to be asked to judge the first Irish Water Spaneil Top Ten Event and he hopes everyone enjoys it as much as he expects to. MRS. KATHLEEN (EGLAND) BROCK - AKC JUDGE Kathleen (Kathy) Brock’s breed has been the Cocker Spaniel since 1978. She was the breeder of the 1990 top winning ASCOB and has bred group winners in the Black and Parti-Color varieties as well. Kathy started judging in 2006 and now has 26 of the Sporting Breeds. Kathy is a Life Time member of the American Spaniel Club and serves as their current first Vice-President. She is also a Life Time member of the Washington State Cocker Spaniel Club and is their Secretary. In addition, Kathy is Vice President and Chief Ring Steward for the Rainier Sporting Dog Association; a member of the Olympic Kennel Club and assists the Profession- als organizer with their Junior Handler Clinic; and a member of the Oregon Dog Judges Club where, from time to time, she helps with their Seminars at the Rose City Classic shows. MS. LAURA REEVES, PHA - PROFESSIONAL HANDLER
Laura is an AKC Breeder of Merit and retired zone rep for
the Professional Handlers Association. Laura is a second-
generation breeder of German Wirehaired Pointers,
under the Scotia Kennel banner.
In her professional handling career, spanning more than
20 years, Laura consistently maintained a low-number,
high-quality client list. She has finished hundreds of
dogs, with clients from each of the seven variety groups.
Specializing in rare breeds and challenging dogs, she has
piloted multiple dogs to Best in Show, Best in Specialty
Show, Group wins, #1 rankings and more.
Scotia dogs have earned more than 100 titles, in the
show ring; in hunt tests, field trials and NAVHDA (North
American Versatile Hunting Dog Association); in agility,
tracking, obedience and rally. Her dedication to breeding
dual purpose dogs reflects a stated goal of preserving
the all-weather, rugged, sound-minded gun dog the
breed’s founders envisioned.
She spent her childhood training field trial Labs with
games of baseball to improve their blind retrieves,
teaching Clumber Spaniels how to swim and German
Wirehaired Pointers to retrieve to hand.
Laura has served the GWPCA as AKC Gazette columnist,
Judges Education Committee member and chair, Vice
President, President, National Events Coordinator and
more.
Her background as a newspaper reporter, marketing rep
and researcher/writer for audio driving tours has served
her well in her side projects. Laura’s weekly column “As
the Wheels Turn” ran continuously for three years on
Best in Show Daily. Her current adventure as host of the
PureDogTalk podcast lends her particular combination of
skills to an outstanding exhibitor education platform.

Cricket is one of Annah and Elliot’s large litter of pups born just as Riley was entering the Best in Show
ring at Westminster in 2011. She shares a birth date with her grandpa Keegan and she’s always been
“special”. Early on, before she was even 6 months old, she followed her big brother Finnegan to field
trials and liked to do upland field pick-up after the big dogs ran. Field training was put on hold while
she tried other venues that included conformation, dock diving, and even she managed to earn a
Trick Dog Intermediate with mom Cat in 2018. Her newest endeavor is in helping sister Luna grow up
to be a proper Irish Water Spaniel. She thinks the world of her team-Stacy Duncan, Shyanne Gates
and Lydia Zemouri, and is very proud to have finished #4 Breed and #6 All-Breed in 2017.

Bold of spirit, strong of will, healthy of body (CHIC) a natural athlete. Pax spent his youth playing on
a rural acre set up for him to run and swim. As a teenager he thought the world was his and it was
time to take over. Luckily Pax was noticed by Jacquelyn Fussell, who saw his potential and
channeled his energy to Championships in the USA (with limited showing) and in Canada with
multiple group placements. Obedience titles were earned with his owner. At seven he still loves to
‘push the envelope’ but that’s Pax.

major in both countries. In the meantime she has earned her Rally Intermediate with AKC and CKC.
She also has her TKN. Her favorite trick thing to do is spin!! She also loves to play touch, and she
sneezes every time she does. Having a girl is very different. But I’m enjoying working and playing with

Calypso is from our first litter and is almost three years old. She earned her Championship from
the Bred-By-Exhibitor class, and in April 2019, earned a Sporting Group 3 placement under Judge
Ms. Pluis Davern. Calypso has also won many NOHS Group placements, including NOHS Group 1
placements. In addition to being shown in conformation, she is well on her way to earning her Rally
Master’s title. Last year, at the national specialty, we entered Calypso in the bird instinct clinic and
learned she has excellent drive. We are planning on training her in fieldwork in the very near future.

At eight years of age, Harry is still the fun boy he has always been. You seldom see him without a toy
in his mouth and his tail wagging. Harry has spent a great deal of his life doing field work but was
retired with three legs on his Master Hunter. He earned his CDX after retiring from his field career at
seven years of age. Although not shown often, he has earned a BISS from the Gun Dog Class, while
winning the Veteran’s Sweepstakes, and being used in Junior Handling.

ultimate showgirl and loves to strut her stuff! She finished her Championship in January 2017 with
multiple BOBs over specials. Her GCH came 3 months later. She is a multiple group placer and has
won multiple BOBs and IWSCA Supported entries. 2017 was an amazing year for Honor ending the
year as the #1 IWS Bitch in breed points, at the tender age of 2. Since then she has been shown on

Reef is our first male IWS and he’s brilliant but complex.
Reef and Kim have fun in the show ring. As a youngster, he won Best Bred-By In Show at Maryland
Sporting Dog. Like his mother and grandmother, he finished his American Championship at the Wine
Country Cluster. He’s earned multiple sporting group placements in regular and NOHS groups. He
received NOHS RBIS at Wine Country in 2017, finishing #2 NOHS IWS two years in a row. Reef won
the breed twice at the Eukanuba/AKC National Championship and was Select Dog at Westminster in
2018.
In Obedience, Reef has American and Canadian CD titles, earning High In Trial in both countries. Kim
and Reef are working towards their CDX. He also has two legs towards his RA title. Dock diving drives
Reef wild! He earned his DS title last year.
Kim & Jeremy are handling Reef in agility, competing at the Master level, and he’s also training for the
field with an eye on earning his IWSCA all-arounder.

By age 2, this classy jet-setter was Winner’s Bitch at an IWSCA Regional Specialty, 3-time IWSCA Best
in Puppy Sweepstakes, Best of Breed over specials with a Sporting Group 4, and had her RN. This year,

Jonny, was born on July 3, 2016, and finished his Championship quickly including going Winners
Dog/Best of Winners and Best in Sweepstake at the IWSCA National Specialty held in South Sioux
City, Nebraska in 2017 at 9 months old. He earned the 2017 IWSCA Top Winners Dog award for his
accomplishments in 2017.
With sporadic showing in 2018, he ended the year the #1 IWS – Breed and #5 IWS – All Breed. During
2018 he won a BISS, multiple Group Placements and many BOBs.

This is Ruefus - Ruefus came from the wonderful Foulby kennels in England. Ruefus started showing
from a young age winning lot’s of puppy classes and he then went on to win his Irish junior title at
Celtic winners and then he optained his Irish show title. Last year he got BOB at Celtic winners and
obtained his international title as well. Ruefus has covered two fabulous bitches last year, and we
currently have two IWS puppies from Woodrock Kennel in Finland. We love our boy very much and
look forward to a long and happy life with him.

Skiff is honored to be included in this inaugural Top 10 event! Having JUST turned 3, there isn’t a
whole lot he can list as accomplishments. He boasts a number of Owner Handled group placements,
his CGC, a Trick Dog Intermediate, his Dock Junior and sports his Therapy Dog vest. At the 2018
specialty, he brought home an Award of Merit and Best Owner Handled dog ribbons. But, truthfully,
he is best known for attaching his whole self to someone who is sitting in the living room in case they
might be blown away and for the ability to open the back door and let all of the dogs into the yard!

I have learned over the 48+ years of owning/breeding purebred dogs, that a lot of what happens –
can be a result of pure chance. Co-owning the 2018 #1 IWS in Canada, was one of those occurrences.
My relationship with the sweetest IWS “girl”, I have owned, began in May 2012, when Catherine
Coles did a breeding to our “Ronan”. Catherine said she was keeping a female puppy and something
prompted me to offer her a reduced stud fee, in exchange for co-ownership. “Juno” ended up living
with us, since 2013, going back to Canada only a few times to be shown. “Juno” earned her AKC and
Canadian Champion titles. She also earned her Rally Novice title, without ever attending training
classes – a testament to her intelligence and desire to please. She whelped 2 pups in 2018 and I’m
hopeful that “Yoda” will be my next Champion. In July 2018, I entered “Juno” in the IWSAC Specialty.
The results – BISS, 2 additional BOB awards and a Group 3, making her the #1 IWS in Canada for 2018.
Juno does everything she can to please us and is so easy going that children, who weigh less than
her, can walk her.
