THE KING’S SCHOOL ROBIN HILLS Our theme for 2017: Stronger together NEWSLETTER 3 – 15 SEPTEMBER 2017 Editorial Dear Parents, Staff and Learners The term has been filled with activities and as we welcome the arrival of Spring we pray that, as the weather warms, our hearts too will overflow with warmth and love for our God and others. “For behold the winter is past. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds has come and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth and ripens her green figs and the vines are in blossom and give forth their fragrance.” Song of Songs 2:11-13. Staff began the term with Assertive Discipline training and the First Aid courses, which are offered regularly, are helpful in maintaining high standards of care. Thank you to everyone for your loyal support of our fundraisers. We raised R5 590-00 for Casual Day which goes to Pathways, Roodepoort. They support learners with special needs. The Intermediate Phase provided much needed grocery and toiletry items for Woodside Sanctuary. These were all very gratefully received. The Grade 10 learners visited Die Poort Primary School in Hekpoort on 4 September. Grade 10 families sponsored stationery packs for each of the learners and our staff donated stationery for the teachers. It was a day of serving through praise and worship, playing games, cleaning classrooms and planting a vegetable garden. Making a Difference is our motto. Well done to the Grade 11s who creatively presented the Matrics with their Matric Farewell invitations. The Grade 11 Induction took place on 23 August and we congratulate those learners who will lead the school into 2018. For the Matrics it has been an exam term as they have tackled Prelims and on Friday 22 September they will be attending the Matric Dance, which will be a special time of making memories with staff and parents. Thank you to parents for supporting our Pre-Primary and Foundation Phase mini athletics. To those parents who ran in the Parents’ race, well done for being such good sports! Children were introduced to athletic skills and healthy competition and a great time was had by all. This has been a busy term with learners from Grades 4 to 7 taking part in the AMESA Maths Challenge. The Grade 1-5s participated in the Eisteddfod where they entertained us with their poetry renditions. There have been educational outings, restaurant evenings, intergrade sport at breaks, job shadowing, Bible Quiz and outreaches. Our learners have participated in Athletics, Soccer and Tennis, and Judah won the Inter-house Chess Competition. Mrs Lyndi Liebenberg (English); Mrs Chariska Knoetze (Accounting) and Ms Candice Bergé (Sports Dept) will all be leaving at the end of this term. We wish them all of God’s blessings for the future – they will be sorely missed. To God be the glory, great things He has done this term. Enjoy the short break and come back restored and refreshed for the last term. Yours in Him, Charles Martin (CEO), Mike Marais (Assistant CEO), Jenni Joubert (Pastoral Head), Susan Wiid (Principal – High school), Pat Fanner (Principal – Primary school) & Jill van der Walt (Principal – Pre-primary)
The Admin and Finance Office will be closed in the September holiday. Applications for siblings must be handed in by end of this term for 2018. In order to determine how many places will be available for new learners, please notify the school in writing if you know your child(ren) will NOT be continuing with us in 2018. Please note: We require one term’s notice. If inadequate notice is given, the account holder will be charged for the full term. As we have waiting lists, your understanding in this matter would be appreciated. THANK YOU to those parents who have been updating emails, contact numbers and addresses on the School Communicator. For any other changes, e.g. marital status, church affiliation, emergency contact details, as well as updating of barriers to learning and/or medical aid details regarding your child(ren), please send an email to: r.lentz@thekingsschool.co.za. Spring Festival 2017 Our annual fundraiser “Spring Festival” was a very joyful occasion with lots of fun, food and fellowship for the whole family. We started off in the auditorium praising God altogether as The King’s School family and then the fun began! The Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners were tasked with the job of creating games of skill for the rest of the school to enjoy and win prizes. These carnival-style games formed part of their Life Orientation assessment. These learners learned project and resource management along with developing problem- solving skills and promoting teamwork. Parents were entertained by the edifying music of Andrew Edgar as they sat in the sun and socialised. Thank you to everyone involved, and especially the parents who worked at the stalls, to make this day successful.
Our cute and talented Pre-School learners charmed and entertained their grandparents with singing and dancing at our annual Grandparents’ Tea on Friday 18 August. At this special event, we take the time to honour grandparents and remind them that we appreciate all the love and blessings that they sow into our lives. The Grade 5 learners carefully served tea and delicious eats to all the guests and contributed towards a warm and colourful event. Thank you very much to the mothers who also took the time to step in and help in various areas as well as all the families who contributed towards the eats for the event. Thank you for working so well with us. We know we are STRONGER TOGETHER. Everyone agreed that this year’s Pre-Primary Mini Athletics, held on Thursday 7 September, was full of colour and smiles. The children thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors and flexing their muscles! The Grade R learners showed their future potential in the high jump, long jump and turbo javelin events while the younger groups had a lot of fun doing novelty races. A firm favourite for the children is watching their parents throw caution to the wind as they participate in the parents’ sprints. Mention has to be made of the funky ‘80’s outfits worn by the Pre- School teachers! Brightly coloured tights and short, leg warmers and headbands were the look of the day as the teachers started a new tradition and ran their own race while being cheered on by children and parents. Thank you to all the parents who took time off from work to come and enjoy the day with us. We appreciate your support!

2 TKSRH Art ExhIbItIon The first art exhibition in a decade was hosted on Tuesday 29 August 2017 and was a major success. There were artworks from guest artists Jaco van Schalkwyk, Izak Buys and Martiens Palmer. Heads of Arts & Culture - Isabelle Siaki and Hlengiwe Xulu held an interview with Jaco van Schalkwyk about his current exhibition “Arium” being held at the Barnard Gallery in Cape Town. http://barnardgallery.com/exhibitions/jaco-van-schalkwyk/artworks/ There were amazing artworks by the Grade 4 to 6 Art Club and Grade 7 to 12 learners. Thank you to everyone who attended this exhibition – the support was phenomenal. The event was a night to remember and we hope to host even bigger exhibitions in the future. Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Edgar Degas
Alumni News LAURA NAUDE – MATRIC 2008 While volunteering in refugee camps in Greece, Laura Naude (Matric 2008) and Esther ten Zijthoff realised that the people they met needed more than food and shelter: they wanted to study, to work for their future and to find a sense of purpose. Naude and Zijthoff were determined to provide a quiet space, amid the upheaval and uncertainty, where people could use their time rather than just fill it. The pair decided to launch Education Community Hope and Opportunity (Echo) and open a library on wheels. Friends in London and Belgium did the fundraising and fitted out an old minibus with shelves and computer points for internet access, then drove it to Greece. The two then appealed for books in Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi, French, Greek and English, slowly filling the shelves and finally opening in November. They now have about 1,300 books – including some in storage because they don’t fit into the van – and welcome an average of 115 readers a week. So far, they have loaned out 904 books. Visitors either sit inside the van or on benches outside, although this depends on the weather, says Zijthoff: “In the freezing winter we had in Thessaloniki, the van was sometimes warmer than the tents, and people would come inside just to get warm.” Now, in the summer, the heat is scorching, so readers come for night-time sessions. “The van has often been hijacked as a party bus, but we do try to keep the library sessions peaceful,” she says. When the authorities don’t allow access to camps, they park the bus outside and let the word spread inside, although they are often shut down without warning. But those who come to the library love it: children say it feels like home; a Syrian economics professor used it to translate his work into English and young Afghans keen to learn English started informal classes. Those leaving the camp have even donated their own books. Photograph by: David Lohmueller As for the future, Zijthoff and Naude have high hopes for their library on wheels, which they both run full time and for no salary, with the help of a couple of volunteers. “When we started the project, we had a vision of duplicating the library setup in multiple regions in Greece,” says Zijthoff. “We are looking for people to hand over the project to, but many volunteers and organisations, not only in Greece but Serbia, Italy, Palestine and Lebanon, say the set-up could work very well. So, even if we are not the ones starting, we hope that the concept will spread.” Article source: https://www.theguardian.com/books/shortcuts/2017/aug/06/children-say-it-feels-like-home-the-mobile-library-for-refugees-in-greece
