SPEAKER PROFILES MR DAVID CLACHER David is a community optometrist who has a practice in Wrexham. He has worked with Vision Aid overseas and independently in Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ethiopia and India; delivering eyecare both to remote villages and city slums. He will talk you through the challenges involved and also the uplifting experience of delivering healthcare in the developing world. DR LINDSAY BOT TOMS Lindsay is a Reader in Exercise and Health Physiology and the Director of the Centre for Research in Psychology and Sport Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire. Lindsay is a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Her research interests are primarily focused on exploring the health benef its of physical activity for different PA G E 8 populations such as young people with depression. A retired international epee fencer, Lindsay has researched how to improve fencing performance f rom a physiological and biomechanical perspective and in doing so worked alongside British Fencing with their athlete development programme. PROFESSOR NICHOLAS THOMAS Nicholas is Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Bern in Switzerland. He grew up in Oswestry and wrote parts of his PhD (University of York, 1986) thesis in a house in Chirk Bank. In 1986, he moved to Germany and has subsequently worked in The Netherlands, the US, and f inally Switzerland. He has worked on numerous space missions including Giotto, Mars Pathf inder, the Huygens probe, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and Rosetta. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) onboard the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter and the laser altimeter instrument (BELA) onboard ESA’s BepiColombo. MS ELEANOR DIACK BMUS (HONS), DIP ABRSM Over the last 15 years ‘Singing for Health’ has become very important to many people suffering f rom breathing issues, mental health problems, loneliness or more recently the development of long Covid. As a professional singer, vocal teacher and conductor, Eleanor Diack has trained and taught for many years in vocal techniques and vocal mechanics. Training with the British Lung Foundation four year ago has led to her becoming one of only 150 specialised Singing for Lung Health Facilitators in Britain. Eleanor gives weekly sessions alongside Pulmonary Physios in a regular programme of outpatient rehabilitation and support network and has also developed an outpatient group based in North East Wales. Eleanor has also been part of research studies, British Lung Foundation conferences as well as BBC radio interviews promoting the benef its for Singing for Breathing. PA G E 9 MR GERAINT THOMAS MB BS FRCS (TR & ORTH) DPHIL (OXON) Geraint Thomas works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon / Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Gobowen. He specialises in Hip Surgery including Hip Preservation in Younger Adults. His research appointment is at Keele University in Population Orthopaedics with a focus on Epidemiology and Clinical Trials. DR DAVID ARMSTRONG From a farming background in North Yorkshire, Dave has had a varied and somewhat alternative career in both practice and industry. He qualif ied f rom the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and holds a post graduate certif icate in sheep health and production. Dave has spent a ten- year period working in technical, marketing and commercial roles in both the UK and in international organisations. He has had responsibility for livestock portfolios spanning pharmaceuticals, biologicals, genomics, precision farming technologies and diagnostics, Dave is currently Global Medical Director for Livestock and Equine Diagnostics for Zoetis, the largest animal health company in the world.
