President’s message — “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” – Albert Camus As you read this, the new school year is already in full swing. The leaves have begun to turn and our favorite football teams are hopefully doing well. You and your students are well on your way to festivals and auditions. These time-honored traditions are a part of autumn. It is, for me, the best season of all. Welcoming new students into the studio or watching the freshmen arrive on campus – seeing their enthusiastic, albeit nervous faces – makes me excited to teach. The students are primed for learning, their minds and hearts ready to soak up information like a sponge. We as teachers have the enormous responsibility to keep their students in this state of mind. We must maintain the enthusiasm, we must keep their minds open and not allow them to become disillusioned and complacent. We need to make sure that we keep our teaching fresh and unpredictable. Therefore, as in my summer message, I issue you another challenge: try something new this season! Teach new pieces, give a recital/performance for your students, try out a new music software program, or join an online piano teacher discussion group. Facebook has some great opportunities for this: I belong to “Professional Piano Teachers” and “The Art of Piano Pedagogy.” Both of these groups offer great insight to anything related to piano teaching. You can ask questions, chime in on other teachers’ questions, or just sit back and read all of the very insightful posts from around the world. It’s like a mini- conference every day! And of course if piano is not your “thing,” one can find a discussion group for any instrument or voice! So, autumn is not only a time for traditions, it is also a time for renewal and change. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” - President John F. Kennedy As we near the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination, this famous quote came to mind and how it applies to IMTA. We are a stronger group when many of us are heard. We are a smarter group when many of us share ideas and thoughts. We are a more diverse group when many of us participate in the leadership. It made me very happy and proud that we received many letters to the editor regarding an article in the Spring magazine (see page XX). It shows the level of caring within our membership. Please continue to bring your thoughts, ideas, concerns, and criticism to the board. If we do not hear from you, then we cannot address your concerns or help implement your ideas. I wish you all the most successful school year ever and may each of your students do the best they possibly can. — Dr. Alan Huckleberry 5 The Iowa Music Teacher

State Audition News Rachel McCoy, State Auditions Co-chair State Auditions will be held March 15, 2014 in Ames at Iowa State University. After serving as State Auditions Co-chair with my mom, Deb Ausborn, for four years, it’s my turn to head things up. Dr. Melinda Westphalen has graciously agreed to be my co- chair and I am looking forward to working with her. I will be updating the online forms and auditions website this fall, but if you have any suggestions please let me know. You can continue to use the imtaauditionschair@gmail.com address, as I will be checking that regularly. Please check the IMTA website (www.iamta.org) for the probationary judges’ list as it will be updated whenever a new request is sent. These new judges need to adjudicate at three festivals before their names can be placed on the full judges’ list. We would like to help these teachers move through the probationary process as quickly as possible, so please consider hiring them for your festivals! Rachel McCoy received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State University where she studied piano and percussion. She has a growing private music studio in Osceola where she also accompanies for two local schools’ vocal music programs. She has been the Southern Iowa MTA local association president and auditions chair for the past three years. Early this fall she hopes to complete her Certification Portfolio and become a MTNA nationally certified piano teacher. She has been the State Auditions co-chair with her mother, Deb Ausborn, the last four years and will continue with the help of Dr. Melinda Westphalen. Dr. Melinda Westphalen received her Bachelor of Music degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, and both her Master of Arts and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She currently serves as Lecturer in Music on the Grinnell College Music Faculty, where she teaches piano and keyboard harmony lab, and serves as the department accompanist and student recital coordinator. She is also on the piano faculty of the Orchestra Iowa School in Cedar Rapids where she maintains a thriving private piano studio. She has previously taught at the Conservatory of Piano in Worthington, Ohio, and has been a Visiting Artist at Cornell College, and Music Critic for the Dorian Piano Festival at Luther College. She is a member of Music Teachers National Association and Iowa Music Teachers Association where she is currently serving as District Auditions Chair in Cedar Rapids, and is active as a judge for auditions and festivals. 7 The Iowa Music Teacher
Technology Column One-Stop Shop On-Line Studio Management: MusicTeachersHelper.com By Janci Bronson, NCTM IMTA Technology Chair As busy teachers we are always looking for ways to streamline our teaching and make our studios run more efficiently. Music Teacher’s Helper (MTH) is an incredible one-stop shop to manage our studios. This on-line software creates a personalized website that can manage the studio’s student contact information, practice log, lending library, repertoire tracker, e-mails students, create an on-line calendar of lessons and studio events, on-line billing, accept on-line payments, track studio mileage, studio expenses, and create financial reports for taxes. MTH also includes a free app, blog, twitter and facebook account, on-line video tutorials, webinars, and an optional monthly newsletter for more great ideas on managing your studio. Depending on your studio size and needs, teachers can choose from four membership types: 1) Free plan, 5 students, 100 mb storage, 2) Basic plan, $14/month, 20 students, 1 GB storage, 3) Plus plan, $29/month, 40 students, 5 GB storage, 4) Premium plan, $49/month, unlimited students, 10 GB storage. The memberships can be tried free for 30 days without submitting any payment information during the trial period. Teachers can add their students to access many of the useful tools, so the monthly cost could be inexpensively distributed among students. Website I know many teachers want to create their own studio website, but might not have the technological prowess or time to create a multi-dimensional on-line site. MTH makes website creation easy, as each of the above mentioned studio plans comes with a studio website with a personalized home page, student registration page, photos, resources page, teacher contact information, student login, and studio policy. The teacher can decide which pages are active for the public and students to see and can also create additional unique pages. Active students and parents that the teacher has registered can login to see upcoming lessons and events on the calendar, log their practice time, view on-line invoices and billing history, studio announcements, and library items checked out. In order to increase the number of people that can find your studio website to recruit potential students, you can submit your website to Google. The Iowa Music Teacher 8
Technology Column Managing Students MTH allows the teacher to register two types of students: adults (paying for their own lesson) and child (lessons paid by someone else). Students can also be registered under families for easy billing and e-mailing. All active students have a login and password where they see information unique to them (practice log, billing, and checked out library items). MTH keeps track of active students' contact information, lesson cost, birthday, date started, school name, skill level, and lesson schedule. All of the information can be exported to an excel file for easy viewing, which would be handy while filling out festival and audition entries. Students that are looking for a teacher can also register for lessons on your website where they will automatically be placed on a waiting list. E-mail Options E-mailing students becomes easy as MTH keeps lists of students (active, waiting, and former) that the teacher can choose which group(s) to e-mail. Teachers can organize any number of lists such as parents only, parents and adult students, child student, etc. Additionally, MTH will save the teacher time by storing e-mail templates for future use. An especially helpful e-mail feature is the optional automatic notifications for birthdays, upcoming events, and overdue invoice notification. Practice Log Students can login to their account from a computer or mobile device using the free app to record their practice time for their teacher and parent to check. Additionally, students and teachers can enter notes about the practice session(s) to guide future practice. Lending Library The lending library allows the teacher to create categories of materials such as sheet music, books, instruments, or any other supplies lent out. This organization makes it easy for the teacher to click which library item is being checked out and also to log when it is returned. This will allow students and their parents to check which items they have in their possession. Repertoire Tracker The repertoire tracker is an awesome organizational tool for tracking current and future pieces that student will learn. This tool tracks which pieces the student has mastered, pieces that are ready to perform, or simply pieces they are currently working on. Pieces are listed by title, composer, date started, difficulty level such as the IMTA category, the association/organization/ competition prepared for, rating/score, duration, and any additional comments. 9 The Iowa Music Teacher
Technology Column (continued) Calendar The on-line calendar can help teachers and their students’ track lessons and upcoming events. It can also easily be synced with Google and iCal calendars. Teachers can choose event title, description, category, location, cost, date, time options, duration, and repeat type (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). The optional on-line booking option is great for requiring students to register for events. Students simply login and register for upcoming lessons, make-up lessons, group event or party registration. The ‘Reconcile Events’ link allows the teacher to privately enter notes about the lesson, record payments received, and also post notes to students and parents that can instantly be e-mailed. Teachers can also block out holidays or other dates for students and their parents to see dates of no lessons. Lastly, the calendar can easily be exported and printed to see the daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. Billing MTH allows parents and students to pay for lessons with a credit card through your individual studio website. Payment can be set up through PayPal, which does charge minimal fees for their secure services. PayPal makes it extremely easy for the teacher to transfer payments directly to their bank account, minimizing the need to run to the bank for deposits. Invoices can be created manually or automatically through MTH, which can be printed or sent directly via e-mail. MTH stores all invoices to make it easy to search by name or invoice number. Also, all financial reports can be reported to an excel file for end of year tax reports. Mileage Tracker Teachers can report the date traveled, distance, destination, odometer readings, trip purpose, vehicle used, any notes, and repeat options. The mobile app would be especially handy for the mileage tracker. All the information can be exported to report at tax time. Studio Expenses Additionally, MTH helps teachers list transactions by type, date, category, amount, tax amount, payee, and any details. It also has the option to list recurring transactions. Again, export the information to report to your accountant. Music Teacher’s Helper makes it easy for the studio teacher to organize the many facets of teaching. The website additionally gives the teacher extra exposure for recruiting new students and creates an on-line informational and interactive site for registered students and their parents. The free app is especially helpful as a mobile reference for you and your students. Check out the free trial to see if the website could work for you. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at jbronson@iastate.edu. The Iowa Music Teacher 10
2013 Certified Teacher of the Year: Judy Dixon As most of you know (and some of you bemoan) the MTNA Professional Certification program has never been static but ever-changing and growing. Its functionality in an ever-changing professional environment demands it to be a dynamic program to meet the ever-changing needs of MTNA members. In all of its metamorphoses, however, it remains a strong program and one that I still believe in whole-heartedly and desire for more members to take advantage of. It is fitting then, for us tonight to honor an Iowa member who is also quite dynamic, every growing and changing, and yet solid in knowledge and still a “go-to” person for many of us in IMTA and one I desire you all to know. Tonight’s recipient sought certification in Iowa by first applying for the Master Certificate based on student ratings in IMTA District and State pre- college piano auditions. As a BME graduate of Augustana College she already had a firm knowledge base in the fundamentals of teaching music, but desired something beyond a degree that attested to her experience and professionalism……enter IMTA/MTNA certification. Both were sought and obtained in 1983. She has since received Permanent Professional Certification in piano from MTNA. She was an active member of IMTA before obtaining her certificate evidenced by her students winning district and state piano auditions. As an IMTA member she served her local association as president and audition chair and served the state as a member of the repertoire committee, and advertising editor for the Iowa Music Teacher. She is well-known in her area as an accompanist and chamber musician on both piano and cello and is always in demand as an adjudicator for IMTA festivals and auditions. She was awarded the IMTA Distinguished Service Award in 2010 and continues to serve and support state and local IMTA groups by presenting workshops around the state. Her knowledge of pedagogy literature and new publications continues to make her a “go-to” person even after her retirement from Rieman Music. There are many qualities for which I admire, Judy Dixon, none-the-least of which is her ability to adjust to the changes life brings, welcomed and unwelcomed, and press on. Judy’s inspiration goes way beyond mentoring a young piano teacher, or new member of IMTA. She provides life inspiration and is a shining example of what one person—one woman can do to change her world and the world of those around her in a dynamic way. Please join me in congratulating Judith Dixon, our 2013 IMTA Certified Teacher of the Year award recipient. -Cindy Lear 11 The Iowa Music Teacher

If we subtract the 2012 Conference Expenses from the Difference Between the Budget and Actual Expenses ($11,175.12 - $11,385.75), we have a LOSS of -$210.63. The budgeted loss was -$4,245.00, so this loss is less than expected. b) Festival expenses are rising each year. I recommend an increase in Festival fees for 2014-15 unless we choose to accept a yearly loss in this category. c) IMTA Mailing Labels did not produce a profit this year. I recommend a review of expenses to make sure that IMTA doesn’t lose income with this project. d) State Dues income was higher than expected because membership increased from 362 to 374 since last year. e) Student Travel exceeded the budget by $1,900.00 because 16 Iowa students competed at MTNA Divisional Competitions ($200.00 per student) and 9 Iowa students competed at MTNA National Competitions ($300.00 per student). Choosing the Right Piano Larry Fine has been publishing his Piano Book for decades, and now it's available online (for free). The print and online versions are different, and I always keep a printed copy in my shop, but the online information is easy to search and quite useful. His website is www.pianobuyer.com. Piano World is another great online resource. The discussion forums are a searchable information source where you'll find a range of opinions (some of them quite adamant) on nearly any piano question or brand. Yes, it takes time to sift through all this information, but just think how much you are learning in the process! And the Piano World forums cover a great deal more than just pianos. Go to www.pianoworld.com to start exploring. Piano World also includes a piano marketplace where both new and used pianos are listed for sale. A number of piano technicians also provide good information on how to choose a piano. Search on “how to buy a good used piano” and see what comes up. The Piano Technicians Guild has a link, as do a variety of techs and other businesses. (Beware of the sites offering to put a value on a piano, as that's something that can really only be done hands-on. Anything else is simply a general guess.) And finally, there is your piano technician. Talk to your tech! Paying a technician to thoroughly examine a piano can save a great deal of trouble and expense. At the very least, talk to your technician about the piano(s) being considered, and get some advice on what to look for. Using the Piano Atlas, we can look up serial numbers and tell you how old a piano is, and we can help you be a more savvy adviser (or buyer) in many other ways. Technicians would much rather help buyers avoid costly mistakes—our job is a whole lot more fun if the piano has potential. So talk to your tech (or help your student get in touch with a local technician). If you need a referral, please visit www.ptg.org to find a list of Piano Technician Guild members in your area. Deborah Ausborn Receives "Certified Teacher of the Year" Deborah Ausborn received the 2013 Distinguished Service Award. The following outlines her great contributions. “ . . . After graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education [from Northwestern College in Orange City], Deb taught “in the trenches” by being a public school teacher, teaching vocal music for many years in the public schools, somewhat off and on while she was raising kids. During all her public school teaching time (and mind you, also raising a family) she managed to maintain a private teaching piano studio as well. Her first involvement in IMTA was as a student so as a teacher she wanted those same opportunities available to her students. She joined IMTA and right away volunteered to help with district auditions for her club. Her success with students entered into IMTA auditions allowed her to receive the Iowa Master Teacher certification in 1997. Many public school teachers feel because of their state licensure, there is no need to seek any further certification. Thankfully, Deb saw beyond the limited view of “enough for me” to the bigger landscape of a profession asserting standards of excellence for all teachers, private and public, and received her MTNA Professional Certificate in Piano in 2009.” “ . . . After chairing the district auditions she went on to co-chair State Auditions with Denise Naeve and finally to accept the position of state chair for the last [four] years. During her tenure, issues have arisen that needed attention and Deb had the courage to tackle these controversial issues head on . . . Although she has not taught in public schools for the last [six] years, she remains “in the trenches” teaching a music class/choir for a local homeschool group. She has been very involved in various music groups at church, as a participant and leader (mostly leader) . . . [H]er daughter, Rachel has chosen to come alongside her mom . . . to join her in . . . leading IMTA State Auditions. “ In 2011, Deb and Rachel put all the Auditions forms and information online, making registration and reporting much more efficient. Deb took a computer class during the summer of 2011 in order to learn how to accomplish this, then committed most of her time from August through January assisting local Auditions Chairs with all aspects of the online process. As part of her job as Auditions Chair, Deb also organizes the IMTA State Piano Auditions and the Honors Recital at IMTA State Conference each year. In 2011-12, Deb also served on the IMTA Judges’ Task Force. This committee started the process for new judges to be added to the judging list. Congratulations to Deborah Ausborn for receiving the 2012-13 IMTA Distinguished Service Award! The Iowa Music Teacher 16
