POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 to say “The ability to send a voice note in decent quality before the day of recording”. We ask very little of our ‘guests’. WHAT MAKES A GREAT HOST? Being able to connect with the audience. The best podcasts feel like they are speaking just to you. Whether it be a true crime podcast or a sports podcast, the really great hosts feel like they are on the phone to you, not hosting a podcast. There are so many out there where it seems they have no regard for the audience at all. As a stand up comedian, this is obviously something I lean towards, because my audiences will let you know pretty quickly if you’re not their cup of tea. WHAT IS IT ABOUT PODCASTS THAT APPEALS TO YOU? “WE CAN LITERALLY SAY Getting to be funny together as a couple, on ANYTHING WE WANT, our own terms. NEW TESTAMENT THE NEW TESTAMENT // EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST 12 MONTHS THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE Long Form Interview #1289 // Eddie Izzard // May 2019 Eddie and Joe go deep during this three hour conversation covering everything from running 27 marathons in 27 days, coming out as transgender, performing stand up in 5 different languages across 25 different countries and the differences between performing comedy and drama. As always Joe is a respectful and insightful interviewer while Eddie continues to prove himself as one of the most fascinating and erudite interviewees out there. SMASHING SUNDAYS Comedy / Interview 6 // Adam Hess // March 2019 On each episode of Smashing Sundays, Lucy Pinder and Beth Granville are joined by a guest to discuss the laziest day of the week: Sunday. From the good Sundays to the bad ones there’s something strangely relaxing about the topic. That is, at least, until they invited comedian Adam Hess on. Keeping Adam on any kind of format seems impossible, and it’s all the more glorious for it. Full of stories and an unflinching conviction for everything he says, Adam takes this episode by storm. STRONG SONGS Music "Tiny Dancer" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John // June 2019 If you're a fan of having knowledgeable people explain why things are good in an engaging and accessible way then Strong Songs is for you. Writer and composer Kirk Hamilton breaks down a different song every episode, although on this occasion he explores the song writing genius of Elton John by delving deep into two structurally very different songs. Even if you know nothing about music theory Kirk's enthusiasm for the subject will give you a renewed appreciation for what makes a song work. 08 //
POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 TERRIBLE, THANKS FOR ASKING Society & Culture 51 // Nebach // October 2018 After losing her husband to brain cancer, Nora McInerny wished she could answer people honestly when they asked how she was. Instead, she made Terrible, Thanks For Asking, a podcast that doesn't shy away from the awful things some of us go through. But the dark subject matter is perfectly balanced with McInerny's brilliant hosting. In episode 51, Nora speaks to a young Orthodox Jew who has trouble dating.... and then the real trouble starts. A story as impressive as it is heart-breaking. JOSIE & JONNY ARE HAVING A BABY WITH YOU Parenting The Name Game w/ Isy Suttie // Feb 2019 Josie Long & Jonny Donahoe are two of the most beloved names on the British comedy circuit... and they’ve recently gone and had a baby! To document the confusion, panic, laughs and tears of their journey they started a podcast and invited guests on to try and figure things out with them. In this episode the equally beloved Isy Suttie is brought in to discuss the topic of baby names. Whether you have kids or not we promise you this is an absolute joy of a listen. TELL THEM, I AM Society & Culture 01 // Tan France After pointing out that the questions most often asked of Muslim people tend to center around Islamophobia, headscarves or terrorism, host Misha Euceph decided to ask 22 prominent Muslim guests different questions about their lives. In the first episode Queer Eye's Tan France delves deep into his love for dispensing advice and how he inherited the trait from his mother of always saying 'I told you so'. A refreshing and enlightening listen. FALLING FORWARD W/ DAN LE SAC Interview #007 // Dan Hett // May 2019 On the Falling Forward podcast producer and gamer Dan Le Sac talks to creatives about where they find their inspiration. The answer in this episode is truly unique. Dan Hett is a game maker and when he lost his brother in the Manchester terror attack he found himself processing it by creating a game that went through the immediate aftermath, staying true to the dark humour he and his brother shared, and the even darker actions of the tabloid press. Shocking and moving in equal parts. // 09

Sport S02E02 // Frank Skinner // September 2017 The ideal podcast for anyone who remembers football during the 90's - Josh Widdicombe, Chris Scull and 'Director of Podcast' Michael Marden embark on a tour of niche football topics. Previous guests have included footballers Matt Le Tissier, Paul Merson and Darren Anderton but this episode features Frank Skinner - stand-up comedian, co-host of 90s TV show Fantasy Football League and co-writer of the England anthem Three Lions. Prepare yourselves for an overdose of nostalgia. INVISIBILIA Science / Documentary Flip the Script // July 2016 Invisibilia hinges on the concept of the invisible forces that control our behaviour and our thinking. It explores every psychological and neurological phenomena you could think of through fascinating stories. In this episode, the NPR podcast explores what happens when people do the opposite of what's expected. It involves the story of a robbery disarmed by a glass of wine. Most episodes offer an interesting takeaway for our own lives – and 'Flip the Script' is no exception. RHLSTP (Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast) Interview Episode 50 // Steve Coogan // Nov 2014 There are some podcast guest that are rare in appearance but rich in delivery and Steve Coogan is definitely one of them. Way back in 2014 he made an all too rare appearance on Richard Herring's hugely popular podcast in front of a live audience at the Leicester Square Theatre. Higlights include a discussion over why 'Around the World in 80 Days' really needed more martial arts and an argument over who really created Alan Partridge. 14 //
POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 99% INVISIBLE Documentary / Nature 256 // Sounds Natural // April 2017 The aim of 99% Invisible is to expose the unseen and overlooked aspects of design, architecture and creativity in the world. In this episode Roman Mars (a definite front runner when it comes to the most comforting voice in podcasting) looks into the world of foley artists and specifically their work within nature documentaries. Be prepared for huge revalations that will make you question every sound you hear on television from now on. DESERT ISLAND DISCS Music / Interview Yoko Ono // Jun 2007 A format that almost everyone is familiar with, Desert Island Discs has inspired many of today's most popular podcasts. For years before the back catalogue was converted to podcasts there was a false memory that Yoko Ono had chosen The Cheeky Girls as one of her songs. While unfortunately not true, this episode is full of surprises. In fact host Kirsty Young recently told the Radio Times that "it wasn't one of my favourite interviews, but it was an extraordinary encounter". RADIOLAB Documentary The Gondolier // Jun 2017 Radiolab is a US radio show turned podcast that focuses on science and storytelling. In this episode, more heavy on the story than the science, Radiolab reporters travel to Venice to learn about the 1000 year old tradition of the Ventiatian Gondolier. As the episode goes on you intimately get to know Alex, the main subject as well as the canals he works on every day. Who knew such an industry could be so surprisingly cutthroat? THEY WALK AMONG US True Crime Season 2 Episode 10 // Nov 2017 They Walk Among Us is testament to the effectiveness of simplicity. One narrator, one story of a murder that took place in the UK, no frills. But the podcast has remained in the podcast charts since its first episode in 2016. In season 2, episode 10, the podcast takes a break from the usual brutal murders to tell the story of identical twins Jennifer and June Gibbons. The tale includes selective mutism, arson and Broadmoor. An eerie story that'll have you hooked from the start. // 15

GOOD SAMARITAN POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 FOR THE LOVE OF POD // DJ YODA WHICH PODCASTS DO OUR FAVOURITE CELEBRITIES LISTEN TO? WE ASKED HIP HOP DJ AND PRODUCER DJ YODA FOR THE 5 PODCASTS HE COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT. 1 REFLECTIONS OF A DJ (R.O.A.D.) This is definitely the only podcast out there dealing with real DJ issues! Crooked, Neva, D Miles and the rest of the gang are based in Las Vegas, which is the centre of the DJ universe right now, and I got the chance to sit down with them for an episode when I was there recently. 2 THE EMPTY BOWL The only place to go for breakfast cereal news and reviews! Yes, this is very niche, but that’s what podcasts are all about, no? What can I say, I love breakfast cereal. 3 THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST I’m a huge fan of Adam’s and I think he’s probably about 10 years away from being Stephen Fry (which is a very good thing). Plus he told me that he was emulating my style with one of his jingles (see if you can guess which one), which made me feel very proud. 4 THE BUGLE I’m not a very political person, but for some reason I really enjoy political satire (The News Quiz, Have I Got News For You etc) and I’ve been listening to Andy Zaltzman since John Oliver was involved. I love The Bugle 2.0 though, as I’m a fan of Nish Kumar too. 5 HIP HOP SAVED MY LIFE Romesh is the homey. He approaches hip-hop from the same place as me, so we’ve got a lot in common. I’ve moved beyond a guest on this podcast, I kind of co-hosted one episode and I’ve been involved with the live events too. Big ups to Romesh! // 35
GOOD SAMARITAN PODCAST PROPHETS // LOU SANDERS CELEBRATING PODCASTERS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE, BUT IN THIS MODERN WORLD BEING A SOLID, GRADE-A GUEST IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS CELEBRATING. OUR PODCAST PROPHET FOR ISSUE #004 IS LOU SANDERS. In recent years Lou Sanders has been all over our TVs stealing the show. Seemingly out of nowhere she’s put in side splitting appearances on Hypothetical, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and, of course, Taskmaster. But, to those in the podcast world, it wasn't out of nowhere as she has been tearing it up as a guest on a wide range of podcasts for years now! Lou’s unique takes on subjects have been what made her stand out on TV and they’re exactly what makes her a consistently hilarious and rarely repetitive podcast guest. Here’s some of our favourite episodes... 36 //
POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 DRUNK WOMEN SOLVING CRIME 15: The Mother Of All Criminals & Stolen Bermuda Shorts // Nov 2018 DWSC has been one of the blow up successes of recent years and, as luck would have it, two of Lou’s favourite things are drunk women and solving crime! The perfect guest right?! Not quite. She’s now sober. But fear not, as that doesn’t hinder her ability to approach the crimes in question from the strangest of angles. It makes no sense that she’s the only sober person. UNEXPECTED FLUIDS E4S2: Sex tech fails // Sep 2018 Taking your podcast live can throw up all sorts of issues but going live with a podcast about sexual mishaps and mistakes presents its own set of... unique hurdles. So who better for the London Podcast Festival appearance of Unexpected Fluids than the often uncomfortably comfortable Lou Sanders! Lou gleefully shares tales of tinder terrors, fiancé foibles and so much more. BIRTHDAY GIRLS HOUSE PARTY New Year's Eve // Dec 2018 The birthday girls bring party after party to the podcast world... but you don’t bring out a party pro like Lou Sanders for just any do. No, no, no. You save Lou for THE NEW YEARS EVE PARTY! Resolutions, choosing who to kiss at midnight and international New Years traditions all combine to make it a party you really won’t want to miss. FILMS TO BE BURIED WITH Christmas Special // Dec 2018 After interrupting many episodes while living with host Brett at the Edinburgh Fringe, listeners were eagerly awaiting Lou's full appearance on the podcast. Sadly, things didn't go to plan. Instead of “First film you saw?” or “Scariest/ funniest film?”... Lou proceeded to change the questions to “First cuddle you saw?” and so on. Ridiculous but unexpectedly tender and bloody lovely. THE COMEDIAN'S COMEDIAN 110 // Feb 2015 Recorded three years before the episodes above, Lou's chat with Stuart Goldsmith finds her in a much more calm and reflective mood as she discusses her career to date. Although there are sneak peaks of Lou's performing persona, the majority of the podcast shows a side that we perhaps hadn't heard before and allows us to learn about her journey as a comedian. // 37

GOOD SAMARITAN CHOIR OF ANGELS FOCUS: PODS GO POP NEED AN INSIGHT INTO WHAT MAKES A CHART-TOPPING SONG? HERE ARE THREE PODCASTS THAT DIG DEEP INTO THE ART OF MAKING A HIT... SWITCHED ON POP Hosted by musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding, Switched on Pop is a show that treats chart music with the same sense of reverence that other music scholars might reserve for their favourite classical composer. In fact, the hosts are often at pains to draw a link between the pop music of today and the songs they made you study at school. Episodes include an extensive look into how streaming has changed the length of songs, an investigation into the conspiracy that all Indie Rock has the same chorus and a conversation with Lizzo about Janelle Monáe's 'Make Me Feel'. STAND-OUT EPISODE: Charli XCX and Troye Sivan Love the 90s In response to Charli XCX and Troye Sivan's nostalgia-laden '1999' Nate and Charlie look at the what the song gets right about the late 90s but also, crucially, what the song might be missing. POPCAST Don't know the difference between 'Soundcloud Rap' and 'Spotifycore'? Well, you need The New York Times Popcast, granddad. Hosted by Jon Caramanica with a changing roster of clued-up guests from the world of music journalism, the show is a weekly deep dive into modern day music with an overarching statement or question as a springboard for discussion. Subjects can vary from a sober conversation about abuses of power within the industry (god knows there's a lot of that going around), a discussion about Lil Nas X's 'Country Road' and where that sits in the history of Country Rap, all the way to a deep analysis of how the Billboard Charts now work in the world of streaming. STAND-OUT EPISODE: 'Girls' Gone Wrong: Who Gets to Make a Gay Love Song? After the release of the song 'Girls' by Rita Ora, Jon Caramanica was joined by Critic Wesley Morris, musician Mackenzie Scott AKA Torres and songwriter Shura to discuss the conversations that the song provoked. 44 //
POD BIBLE // #004 // AUG 2019 SONG EXPLODER Song Exploder pretty much does what it says on the tin, it takes a popular song and 'explodes' it into its constituent parts via a narration talking you through the song. The thing about this show that can't be said for other music podcasts is that it has direct access to the songwriters, as well as the actual separate pieces of audio that make up the songs. This means the story of the songs composition is being told by someone intimately involved in the creation of the piece, and when they describe even a tiniest sound that's often lost in the mix of the final piece, you'll hear it. Each episode ends with the song in full and, even if you've heard the song a thousand times before, it will sound totally different after hearing the creative and technical process that brought it to life. STAND-OUT EPISODE: tUnE-yArDs - Water Fountain Merrill Garbus is the primary songwriter in tUnE-yArDs and, if you've heard any of their music before, you'll probably know their songs don't exactly sound like anything else out there, so to hear how she comes up with a song is a genuinely valuable insight. Throw in some politics and dancehall reggae, and you've got yourself a vintage Song Exploder. WRITTEN BY PODCASTER AND PODCAST ENTHUSIAST @JOHNCNHARRIS // 45
