The Embroiderer - Embroiderers ...
President’s Report

Dear Members,

I am happy to report that in October we had a successful AGM. We welcomed Isobel Laurance to
the Management Committee and she has agreed to become House Officer for Guild House. Isobel
has already been busy on the job and we thank her for taking on this role, which is vital to the
maintenance and comfort of Guild House. I am also pleased to advise that Helen Jones was re-
elected to the Management Committee and that both Leanne Barker (Secretary) and Ann-Marie
Anderson Mayes (City Vice-President) were formally elected to their positions, having been co-
opted earlier in the year. On behalf of all members and the Management Committee I would like to
express our great thanks to two retiring members, Joan Sibenaler and Jenny Stephenson for their
significant contributions to management over several years. We hope they both enjoy their
“retirement” and have time to do some embroidery.

We are almost at the end of our 50th Anniversary year and I hope that everyone has enjoyed the
various activities. By the time you read this many Groups will have had their Christmas functions
and the remaining Groups will be doing so shortly. It has been a great year but there is also a lot of
excitement to come in 2020. Some of the upcoming events are outlined in this issue and others will
emerge during the year, so keep an eye out on the Guild website, The Embroiderer, social media
and the occasional email.

The Education Committee has once again produced a wonderful workshop program for the first
semester of 2020. Details can be found on the Guild website and also accompany this edition of
The Embroiderer. Do browse the program and make your bookings easily on Trybooking by
following the website links.

On behalf of the Management Committee I would like to wish you, your family and friends a happy
and safe festive season. I hope you have a joyful and relaxing time. Perhaps in January you will
find time to embroider and plan ahead for some of the Guild activities planned for 2020.

Happy stitching.

Prudence

From The Editor

Here we are at the end of another year, yet again. What a year it has been for the Guild, with
sooooo many amazing events, activities and celebrations. The 50th Anniversary year might be
coming to a close but the fun is continuing on. Now is the time to get your new diaries happening
for 2020 or in today’s terms, fill in your iCal. And wow, what a lot of awesome things there are in
the pipeline already. As you will see at the back of this issue, the calendar for next year is already
“chockers”!

Inside you will read details of a very exciting AC/DC (yes, the band!) related public event in March
that the Guild will be involved in – this is going to be a great way to promote embroidery and
expose the Guild to a wider audience. There is a lot of info here for you about dates of classes and
other events, and please take note of the Guild House holiday closure period (see below).

You will recently have received a link to the workshop program for the first half of next year by
email, or it will accompany your newsletter. Bookings are already open and coming in, so please
take note of the cut-off dates for the classes you are interested in so that you do not miss out.
There are some lovely projects on offer – I feel 2020 is going to go just as quickly as 2019 with all
of the things we have lined up.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and safe New Year filled with lots of stitching.

Michelle

The Embroiderer - Embroiderers ...
REPORT - EMBROIDERERS’ GUILD OF WA
 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2018-19
The AGM for 2018-19 was held at 1.00pm on Sunday 19th October (at Guild House). Some 38 people
attended, hearing reports from our Treasurer, two Vice-Presidents, Librarians, Public Relations Officer,
House Officer, the Education Committee and the Collection Group as well as your President. It was very
interesting to realise and appreciate just how much had gone during the year!

Those in attendance asked several questions, which was great from my view as it showed they were
interested and it does hold us to account.

We had already announced the Guild Awards for the year (Life Membership for Faye Phillip, a
Commendation Award to Judy Rowson and a Service Award for Maree Talbot) but I was very pleased to be
able to provide Rosalie Strom with her Commendation Award.

“Rosalie has been a member of the Guild for 25 years. Over this time she has been a member of the
Management Committee for six years and edited the Guild’s newsletter for seven years. As a professional
librarian, she assisted Dellys Rodgers in transitioning the Guild’s library from alpha categories to an
electronically based, modified Dewey system. Rosalie is a very active member of the Wireless Hill Group
and has been both Group Leader and Tutor. She always contributes to Guild activities such as exhibitions
and raffles, and volunteers her time to act as Workshop Hostess. This Commendation Award recognises
her sustained commitment to supporting the Guild and promoting the joy of embroidery.”

I was also very happy to present an Attainment Award on behalf of the Education Committee, to Molly Clark
for completion of the Hardanger component of the General Certificate in Hand Embroidery. Congratulations
to both Rosalie and Molly.

I am delighted to advise that both Ann-Marie Anderson Mayes (City Vice-President) and Leanne Barker
(Secretary) were elected unopposed to their respective positions. Both of these ladies were co-opted onto
the Management Committee during 2018/19 and have acted in their positions since that time.

There were two vacancies for ordinary Committee Members. Helen Jones agreed to stand for a second
term and as she had been nominated before the due date she was declared duly elected. Helen brings a
wealth of experience to this position, and as the majority of the Management Committee is very new to their
roles we are very pleased that Helen is willing to spend more time with us.

Isobel Laurance was a nomination from the floor, and on agreeing to this nomination and there being no
other nominations she was declared duly elected. Isobel is also currently on the Education Committee and
we are delighted to welcome her. She has agreed to take on the role of House Officer to replace Joan
Sibenaler, who has retired having completed her six years.

A vote of thanks was made to both Joan and Jenny Stephenson for the time, care and effort they have put
into their roles. We hope that they can both now find more time for their embroidery.

Jenny Stephenson gave a vote of thanks to all those involved in organising the 50th Anniversary activities.
She made special mention of Glen Hall who oversaw the entire 50th Anniversary program over 3 years.
Glen took responsibility for organising the Exquisitely Gifted exhibition, which was curated by Helen Jones
(assisted by Glen). Both have been awarded Government Honours Medals in recognition of their efforts.

Thanks were also expressed to Gerry Harvey for her efforts in organising the 50th Anniversary lunch, and to
Prudence Ford who, aided by the Education Committee planned and organised the 50th Anniversary
Threads of Gold Convention.

The Minutes of the AGM and the full set of reports are available on the Guild’s website under the Members
tab.

HIGHWAY TO HELL
 SUNDAY 1ST MARCH 2020

It’s official! The Embroiderers’ Guild of WA is taking
part in the biggest public event in years next March,
when Canning Highway becomes the venue for a
huge parade of floats and music celebrating Perth’s
connection to iconic Aussie band AC/DC. 10kms of
Canning Highway from Canning Bridge to Fremantle
will be closed for half a day, with trucks bearing
bands performing AC/DC songs travelling along the
highway and stopping at intervals to hold mini-
concerts.

In conjunction with the City of Melville and the Perth
Festival the Guild will run two workshops at the
Wireless Hill Museum as part of their High Voltage
program, in the week leading up to the main event on
1st March.

Lights! Camera! Action! On 3rd November 15 Guild members gave up their well-earnt Sunday lie-
in to represent the Guild for a photo shoot to publicise the event. Bunting bearing the message
“My friends are gonna be there too” (the family friendly slogan for the event – the last line of the
song Highway to Hell) was waiting for some embroidery to be added. Lynn Peirce and Lyn Wieck
arrived dressed for the occasion in blazers and school ties, and everyone rose to the occasion,
belting out the anthemic Highway to Hell whilst waving a needle around!

The photo shoot will become part of the Perth Festival promotional advertisement to be shown at
Somerville Auditorium cinema screenings from December to March. Thank you to all of the
Groups and members who contributed to the fabulous array of bunting flags.

Further plans of what exactly will take place at Guild House on the Sunday are still being finalised,
but the building will be dressed for the occasion and will be buzzing with activity! More details will
be available early in the new year. We assure you that “My friends are gonna be there too”
includes YOU!

Please contact me at gaynorashford@hotmail.com if you have any queries about this exciting
upcoming event. Happy Christmas, Happy New Year and (dare I say it) “party time”!

THREADS OF GOLD –
 THANK YOU

I would like to congratulate everyone concerned with the planning
and running of the Threads of Gold Convention. It was a long
and hard road, but with such rewards at the end! I attended all
three days down at Fremantle and was blown away by the
organisation and efficiency on display.

I attended nine taster workshops in my three days, and I would
especially like to congratulate the local tutors who ran these
sessions. The kits that were included were beautifully presented
with clear instructions, and the actual classes were well run. I was even able to finish some of the
projects on the day, although my Casalguidi fabric tassel and bead necklace projects are still
works in progress!

 FOUNDATIONS IN EMBROIDERY CLASSES 2020
The first Foundations workshops for the new year are coming
up in March (see workshop booklet/Guild website for
bookings), and the first regular Certificate meeting date will
be Sunday 2nd February.

In this course you will learn the basic stitches, which are used
in combination to achieve different effects. You will also learn
about fabrics, threads, needles and other equipment, and
why certain ones are used for certain things.

Armed with mastery of embroidery basics, you will be fully Above: Foundations Workshop 29/3/20
prepared to enrol in the beginner workshops advertised in the Box Construction
 with Ann-Marie Anderson-Mayes
workshop program. These classes are an introduction to
specific techniques/styles, and assume you have a good grasp of commonly used embroidery
stitches. Not just for beginners and new members, this course is also relevant for current
members who wish to refresh their skills, and the cost is heavily subsidized by the Guild.

OUTER SPACE with Innovative Stitches

What a wonderful period of stitching and friendship we have been enjoying. Most members of
Innovative Stitches attended the Convention workshops or had involvement in tutoring, lecturing
and organisation. Learning new techniques, attending lectures and enjoying friendships both new
and old provided a stimulating and blissful time.

The post-Convention workshops at Guild House left us without a venue for our scheduled
September meeting. Our intrepid leader offered her garden and an Outer Space theme was
planned for the day. We brought our UFOs (many fresh from the Convention) and followed the
theme with good old flying saucers (jaffles) for our lunch.

Stitching in bushland gardens on a perfect Spring day whilst in the company of lovely friends was
beautifully relaxing!! We had a show-and-tell from our Convention workshops and experiences,
stitched our UFO projects and ate our jaffles (which triggered many happy childhood memories). It
has to be said that some jaffles were very, very toasty due to us chatting away whilst the irons
were in the fire!

A wonderful time was had all round, with much laughter. A big thank you to Jenny and Steve for
opening their home to us and for Steve’s innovative fire pit.

Wireless Hill group will meet on Mondays throughout January 2019, in the back room at
Guild House from 12.45 - 4.00pm. There won’t be a set program of works; rather this is a

(lone or from other groups) who feel like some Summer stitching are welcome to come along.
Cost will be $4 per session. Enquiries to Joan Sibenaler fjsibenalar1@bigpond.com

Back by Popular Demand! Surprise Day - Saturday, 28th June 2020

GUILD HOUSE – NEXT STAGE OF WORKS PROGRAM

Over the last few years work has been carried out at Guild House to replace the roof, improve
lighting, install in-floor power points etc. The next stage in this works program is to improve
accessibility, as well as consider changes to the external appearance of the building to make it
more visible and attractive from the street.

In line with this the Management Committee has decided to establish a small, timeframe-restricted
working group to explore the options and make some recommendations on the way forward. If
you would be interested in joining this group please contact me at
prudence.ford15@westnet.com.au or on my mobile 0417 982 137.

“WHAT ON EARTH” DISPLAY AT MUNDARING FESTIVAL OPEN DAY

What is there to do between the AFL Grand Final Saturday and Queen’s Birthday Monday? The
answer this year was to attend a day of all things floral, botanical and environmental up in the hills.
With perfect weather Liz Gunn and I loaded up the car with delightful floral items from the
Collection and some Collection sales goods, and headed off bright and early for the Mundaring
Festival Open Day.

It was a successful day and not so busy that we were not able to enjoy all the other entertainment
around. We returned laden with plants and honey, fewer sales items and the happy knowledge of
a pleasing response to our small display.

The Collection has also lent items to the Mundaring Arts Centre, forming part of their What On
Earth exhibition which is on until March. Once again Botanical is the theme: items on loan form a
hospitality section together with examples of Australian china.

One item we have lent for the display is a gigantic kangaroo paw banner designed by Joy Knight
and stitched by Guild members in 1979. The banner hung in St Georges Terrace as part of the
150th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Western Australia. It is 3.5 metres tall and very
imposing. Well worth a visit, and if anyone has a photo of it taken back in 1979 we would love to
have a look or obtain a copy.

The journey to Mundaring takes less than 45 minutes from Perth. The museum and art gallery are
opposite each other in the centre of town and good coffee, tea and food are easy to find. We are
sure you will enjoy yourselves as much as we did.

Thanks to my husband Graeme for helping with the heavy lifting, and for leaving just enough
space for us to get back in the car at the end of the day after all his garden purchases!

 RSN STITCH BANK PROJECT
The Royal School of Needlework has begun to compile a world dictionary of stitches,
to be known as the RSN Stitch Bank. The aim is to digitally conserve and preserve
every stitch in the world.

The Stitch Bank will be available to all and will include videos, instructions, photos,
historical information and examples using pieces from the Royal School of
Needlework’s extensive collection.

The website will be initially launched next July with 500 stitches, and progress from
there as funding allows.
