GRADE - NURSERY Living & Nonliving As a part of their Science Integration, the students of Nursery inquired into living and nonliving things. Using their research skills, they observed carefully and compared themselves to a soft toy and listed the similarities. Through a Venn Diagram, they sorted their findings and interpreted that we were able to do certain things while the soft toy was unable to. They were able to identify and describe the features that made them living and their soft toy non-living. Going further they sorted pictures of living and non-living things which enabled them to display their understanding of the concept.
GRADE - JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN Learner Profile- Risk Taker 'I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it'- Pablo Picasso Our Junior Kindergarten learners inquired into the learner profiles and we explored them in-depth through stories. We read the story ‘Peppa Goes Skiing’ and ‘The Bravest Fish’. Both stories made us connect with the learner profile- Risk Taker. We established risk takers are those who are willing to try new things in order to learn something new. They are not afraid of making mistakes. After inquiring into both the stories the learners reflected on how they have been risk takers, or what they would like to do in order to display the virtues of a risk taker. They illustrated what they would like to overcome or accomplish. Their beautiful illustrations truly reflect that they are all Risk Takers!
GRADE - SENIOR KINDERGARTEN "We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life." Listen Hear! All About The Ear Meaningful inquiry leads to a deeper understanding making the students of Senior Kindergarten knowledgeable and lifelong learners. The students inquired into the structure and function of the ear through the ear model and reflected on their understanding of the function and structure of the ear independently by building on the model.
GRADE - 2 Exploring cultures Learners recently tuned into the unit on ‘Culture’. As we dived into the unit, we invited Ms. Asheka to share the Tibetan Culture with our class. Our students became more open minded while they learnt about the interesting traditions, food, clothing and beliefs of the Tibetan culture shared by our guest speaker. Stay tuned to hear more about a guest speaker coming all the way from Mexico to enlighten our students about the Mexcian culture. Our awareness of different cultures around the world is definitely making us more internationally minded.
GRADE - 3 Ayana Sharma Ayana, our young naturalist, took action and planted these plants to showcase her responsibility towards caring for Mother Earth. She not only watered the plants daily and gave them enough sunlight, but protected the plants from the rain too. Her knowledge about plants has grown manifolds as she now has a strong understanding of how to grow plants from the seeds, take care of the plants and understands the climate required for the plant. She has been consistently monitoring her papaya, jackfruit and jamun saplings ensuring they are growing well.
GRADE - 4 Learning to care through stories Learner profiles are an essential part of an IB curriculum. It helps to develop international minded citizens. As part of guided reading, learners of grade 4 were introduced to interesting stories that depicted the learner profiles of being caring and risk takers. They identified and discussed the different ways they could show their care for people around them.
Hindi Diwas Every year, September 14 is celebrated as Hindi Diwas across India. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi, an Indo-Aryan language, written in Devanagari script as one of the official languages of the Republic of India. The word ‘Hindi’ came from a Persian word ‘Hind’, which means the land of the Indus River. At DYPIS, we generally plan and conduct various activities in school to celebrate the national language. However, this year it was conducted virtually due to the pandemic. We had organised various activities across the grade from 6 to 12 for the celebration, which were conducted by the Homeroom teacher in the last period. The IBDP1 class had taken the initiative to coordinate with students across grade to prepare a fabulous video on the importance of Hindi Diwas filled with a variety of items like dance, poem recitation, speech etc. Students of Grade 6 to 10 participated in activities like a comic poem, drawing with the help of words and picture presentation, creating advertisements on the festival, creating story-based pictures, making a poem or story with words. Throughout all these activities students developed their communication skills and portrayed a good understanding as communicator with the reflection of learner profile attributes. The IBDP1 students enthusiastically participated in a debate activity on the topic of “What do you think about this- we should opt for one universal language for communication?” (For it and against it). It was a treat to see the French and Spanish students also join in the debate and provide their inputs at par with the Hindi students. The IBDP2 students have participated in the debate on the topic of “How do you see the world through the media? (Influence of media)” and came up with good debate points, which was just full of fun all throughout. Overall, it was truly an enjoyable and memorable celebration.
Literary Week Winners Literary week was a huge success in D.Y. Patil International School, with students participating in a variety of fun activities such as Mini sagas, Six Word Memoirs,Terribly Tiny Tales, Digital Collage making, debate, Spell Bee and Symphony of Languages. Apart from these riveting activities students also got to be a part of the guest author sessions where they met Ms. Katie Bagli and Ms. Avan Jesia who are published authors. Students had a quality interactive session on the benefits of reading and writing for a wholesome learning experience, whichever field they may be interested in. It could not have been a better opportunity than this, for our many budding writers and authors. Theme being ‘Story of our Lives’ students used their creative thinking skill and communication skill to look at Language from a different perspective thereby being open minded. In all of the activities students were encouraged to learn about the power of Language and how it helps build bridges between cultures through stories, poetry and words with which the readers resonate to. This one week they indulged in reiterating the importance of Language in the larger scheme of things, besides the sheer pleasure one receives from reading. Literary week was celebrated in all languages in the school (Hindi, French, Spanish and English). REGIONAL QUALIFIERS Team 2 - Dia Makhecha & Navya Mohta (Grade 9) Profile Title: New York- the city that never sleeps Project Category - Graphic Design Description: “Our topic for graphic design was to shed light on a place that we have visited and has left us with wanderlust memories - and this lockdown seems to have us practically prancing off our seats, waiting impatiently for our next trip. Regardless of the fact that no brochure can justify the aura of New York City, using Canva as our medium, we attempted to relive this experience. We included a plethora of breathtaking sights and appreciated the idea of togetherness that New York, for us, seemed to exhibit.” Team 3 - Moksh Shah & Vihaan Shah (Grade 4) Project Title - Alien Invaders Project Category - Game Design A Sci-fi game set deep in space! Theme: “Mission to Mars compromised and our spaceship is attacked by aliens and asteroids. We have to shoot as well as avoid being hit by the aliens and asteroids. The score reduces if they touch the spaceship. A game testing visual skills, coordination skills and speed. The interesting display and sound effects are a treat to the senses!”
Team 4 - Ayaan Shah (Grade 7) Project Title - Space Voyager Project Category - Game Design “Space Voyager gives the users a feel of going into the vast space, fantasizing the surprises the space can have for us. The player is an Astronaut travelling in space. The game has 2 modes:- 1. Galaxy Trek: The astronaut’s spaceship has to travel as far as possible into the galaxies and get as many points as possible. There are no separate levels in this mode. The player has to shoot at the enemies and eliminate them; else they will destroy the spaceship. After the player has collected 15,000 points, he has to face a big enemy, who shoots three bullets at once and the shields cannot defend him and his shots. 1. Galaxy Wars: The Galaxy Wars mode has different levels. The player has to break celestial blocks with a photon ball. Once all the blocks are broken the game advances to the next level. The celestial block formation gets more and more difficult as you go up the level. The player loses a life if he misses catching the Photon ball. In this mode, the player has a choice of playing with different speed options. This game is now online at https://sharemygame.com/@Hello12345/space-voyager. It works best on laptop.”
Team 5 - Dhara Inani & Nidhi Chopra (Grade 9) Project title - Lunchopedia Project Category - Industrial Design Brief- “Lunchopedia is a healthier version of a normal lunch box. It helps prevent harmful bacteria from entering the lunch box. Thus, it protects the food. We have created designs on multiple platforms as a part of industrial designing. We included materials such as bamboo, stainless steel, an area of magnetism (nickel), and a silicon strip for an airtight container. There are 2 boxes. The big box has an optional divider alongside it and the small box has a fixed divider, these 2 boxes can be attachable and detachable because of magnetism.”
