I trust this issue of the Broomstick finds you well at this busy time of the year. Things on the CCA have been fairly calm on the outside but behind the scenes, many plans are afoot for forthcoming events for 2020. Keep your eyes peeled for up and coming notifications, see page 11. It’s been an exciting year welcoming our fantastic new volunteers for the CCA. Our second beer and music festival was a successful event and next year proves to be even more productive and busy. Myself and the rest of the CCA wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Andy As you can see, everyone in the Village is receiving the Canewdon Charity Christmas card with this edition of the Broomstick. To the new people in the Village, this Christmas card is now in its 11th year. Some years we have voted on the Village Facebook page for a favourite photo but this year, the three of us unanimously chose Richard Pryor’s beautiful photo! Everyone who donated gets their name printed inside the card. This year, we have had a record number of donators. After taking the cost of printing off, we have raised a massive £1450 for our three charities. The third charity is voted for by Villagers who have access to the Canewdon Facebook page. This year that charity was Aching Arms, a charity that supports parents who have lost a baby. Thank you so much to Jo for collecting most of the money and chasing up people. Also thanks to Charlotte for editing all the names inside the card. There are still a few packs of village Christmas cards for sale at Costcutters. Packs of 10 cards cost £4. All money raised goes to the CCA and Cancer Research UK. Thank you so much to Mark for selling them. Lynne (Editor) The next issue of the Broomstick will be for March/April 2020. Items to be submitted by 8th February. The Broomstick is printed on paper from sustainable forests by The Rochford Printing Co. and published by the Canewdon Community Association & Village Hall. Canewdon Parish Council Clippings The scheme is currently still on hold but the Council will be registering an interest once it reopens. The Parish Council will be shortly purchasing plants for the patio planters in Chestnut Path. We will shortly be arranging an Adult Mental Health First Aid Training session; we hope to hold the session in the Village Hall for 25 people. The Beavers have been having cracking fun standing on eggs and having egg experiments and working towards lots of new badges. They have all learnt to play the drums in a very different drums session, sitting in a circle and what a musical and rhythmic night they all had. They made poppy jars, crazy experiments and enjoyed lots of games and creative activities . And finally they have their Christmas sleepover which will finish off a fun packed year! For more information contact sachia@2ndcanewdon.co.uk Some of the cubs attended the district UNI-HOC tournament - well done to all who took part for our Group! The Group had Major Jonathon Bleakley attend a session to discuss his and others’ roles in the armed forces, marching and salutes. A big, big thankyou for giving up his time for us! The cubs also had a fantastic night of musical drumming, again like the beavers, making lots of noise and learning about sounds and rhythm A huge thankyou Steve Cooper.....they all had a great night! For more information contact donna@2ndcanewdon.co.uk The group enjoyed making flag poles out of newspapers, took part in an obstacle course testing their knot skills and had some great outdoor activities. The group is taking part in next year’s International Jamboree and we will be also representing our group in the Pedal car rally event in Brentwood in January. This year we will also, for the first time, have 4 explorers entering.......Good luck to you all! For more information contact ian@2ndcanewdon.co.uk As always, the whole group took part in our Remembrance Sunday parade and the service at St Nicholas Church which was well attended. Congratulations to all those children who helped Lee Harrison (our Group leader) in the British Legion poppy appeal where we managed to raise £776.00 On behalf of our group , I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Any comments are always accepted good or bad, we want to listen to what you say. 11
Canewdon Then and Now - Canewdon Hall Not the prettiest of buildings, this square, brick built house that would be the last property to carry the name Canewdon Hall was built in 1807. The previous building was of wooden construction and was thought, in part, to date back to medieval times. The property had been let as a tenant farm to a builder from London named Bullen, who actually built the new house and it is possible that its construction was part of the terms of his lease. Although made of brick, the foundations and basement areas were of stone. The new building was on exactly the same site and was the same size as the previous building so the original foundations may well have been re-used. The stone in the foundations could have contained Roman materials or possibly date to that time. The 1851 census lists only labourers living on Canewdon Hall estate and mentions several unoccupied houses; one of which is probably the Hall itself. On 8th October 1852, the property at Canewdon passed to Paul Midmay Pell. He only kept it for five years and then sold it to William Bodger. William Bodger purchased Canewdon Hall and farm from Pell in November 1857 at quite a high price considering the quality of the land. He had plans to invest in ‘modern’ methods and equipment to cultivate the land. He may have been given the impression that the land 12
produced more than it did because Pell’s tenant, Mr. King, had held back part of the previous season’s harvest in the barns! Whatever the reasons, Bodger’s investment did not profit and he sold Canewdon Hall at a loss in 1861. James Neill purchased Canewdon Hall and farm from William Bodger and sold it on again to Joseph Marriage in 1903. Canewdon Hall itself lasted until it was demolished in 1966 and Canewdon Hall Close was then built on the site in 1969. The actual location of the old Hall would have stood in the front gardens of numbers 5 and 6 in Canewdon Hall Close and the garages which are situated between the two terraces. In its last years, the hall had been converted into separate rented apartments which were said to be damp, draughty and cold to live in. The last of the medieval buildings in the farm complex was the large barn that was destroyed by fire in the hot summer of 1976. Some residents will remember this event well. The barn was full of straw at the time, causing the flames to leap high into the air adding intense heat to the already stifling day. 13

CANEWDON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE It’s a such busy time at the moment with all the Christmas preparations and a General election looming. We are looking forward to our December meeting when we shall be having a party with a demonstration of Christmas parcel wrapping, games and a finger buffet. Our festive dinner will be held in January at the Shepherd and Dog. We find this a nice thing to look forward to after all of the other activities but the only thing is it ruins our New Year resolutions to lose a little weight! Our October meeting was a great success with Jan demonstrating how to make little gift boxes and Jeannette demonstrating how to make sweets. Everyone enjoyed these crafts and went home brandishing a little box full of the goodies they’d made. In November Sue gave a slide show of the various activities our WI had participated in since 2010. Walks, trips to view Poppies at the Tower, barge trip at Maldon, various WI birthday parties and quizzes, Royal Albert Hall and Buckingham Palace for WI 100th anniversary, Flash Dance at Chelmsford , Stow Maries to see airfield , Fashion Show we’d modelled at and tea and cake events we had taken part in. We laughed to see how we’d changed hairstyles, started to wear glasses and realizing how long we’d had some of our clothes. Husbands please note! We wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and A Healthy, Happy New Year 2020 hoping to see our members and any lady that is interested in joining us at our January meeting which will be a quiz and fun.
