C AM P O LSO N YMCA THE BIRCH LOG Volume LXII A Newsletter for the Camp Olson Family Fall 2019 Stewardship for Youth and Protection for Our Environment When E.O. Olson donated 1600 acres in 1954 to form YMCA Camp Olson, he inscribed these words on the dedication plaque: “One man may not live to see his dreams come true, but his institutions carry on. We hope the Young Man’s Christian Association will preserve in this camp a paradise of for- est beauty where youth and their leaders will find joy and inspiration in the years to come.” Most of our active alumni, and many of our staff and campers can recite these words from memory. Camp Olson YMCA is thriving today as a summer camp with 100% occupancy, grow- ing programs and amazing young leaders. As we continue strategize and evaluate our future growth and capacity, we will not lose sight of the importance of protecting this gift and the intent of our founders. Over this past Labor Day Weekend, Camp Olson’s 65th Anniversary was celebrated with over 250 of our alumni, some traveling over 1000 miles came to celebrate the mis- sion of Camp Olson YMCA which is to Share the Spirit of the Northwoods with youth, young leaders and families. Preserving a Paradise: A key part of the 65th celebration was an announcement and presentation of a joint collaboration between the Minnesota Land Trust and YMCA Camp Olson to preserve and protect the Camp Olson YMCA property. The camp is in the final stages of protecting forever 52 acres of shoreline around Cooper Lake, one of five lakes the camp encompasses or has shoreline on. A Legacy of Environmental Advocacy: The intent of this Conservation Easement is to protect critical habitat, water quality, and future development. This will be the camp’s third conservation easement protecting a total of 260 acres and planning for a fourth easement has already begun. Did you know that you can do- nate directly to Camp Olson YMCA thru Facebook. 100% of all gifts donate go directly to Camp Olson YMCA, Facebook does not charge a processing fee.
Page 2 The Birch Log President’s Message ~ Michael Holmes Greetings! As the season’s change I am often inclined to refl ect back on what has occurred and look forward with anticipation as to what is to come. In the context of Camp Olson that means refl ecting back on another amazing summer with strong attendance, continued growth in the Leadership Develop- ment Program, and trips ranging from Island Royale, the Superior Hiking Trail, Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the Apostle Islands, and closer to Camp, the Boy River and the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails. It means refl ecting back on those fi rst time campers for whom the experience has sparked a desire to keep coming back. It’s looking at how fi rst time staff mem- bers dealt with the jitters that come with caring for the well-being of the camp- ers they were responsible for. It’s refl ecting on how returning campers and staff often start where they left off, but with a little more confidence and maturity each year. And it’s realizing how a simple thing like a Staff Lounge made a difference on so many levels to hard working young lead- ers. Looking forward, we already know from the to-date enrollments that the Leadership Development Pro- gram is off to another fantastic start. But beyond that are a lot of questions, a lot of unknowns. Which campers are going to get off the bus and begin what may be a life changing experience? For which camp- ers will their session at camp be the only time they feel that people care about them? What will the new staff housing look like. Will a camper’s favorite counselor be back or will that camper now have even more favorites? Which staff members will surprise themselves with how well they handle challenging situations? All in all, there are a lot of wonderful things to reflect back on and a lot of things to look forward to. I cannot end this entry to the Birch Log without mentioning something that occurred to me when I visited Camp this past July and was reinforced at the 65th Reunion. The 65th was a fantastic celebra- tion with 7 decades of alumni staff represented. Sometimes when so many generations get together, it is human nature for them to talk about the differences in their Camp Olson alumni experiences. While it’s fun and interesting to do that, maybe even a little boastful (“Little Boy Lake was 10 degrees cooler when I worked here”), we should not forget the things have not changed. Because it’s those things that have not changed, the things that generations of staff have in common, and generations of campers have experi- enced, that makes Camp Olson what it is today. When I visited in July, I was standing with Demi watching the campers and staff out front of the Trading Post during Power Up. It occurred to me, that if I took a black and white photo and showed it to alumni across the generations there would likely be many claiming the photo was taken when they were at camp. Why? Because the picture would show young people of all backgrounds being led by slightly older young people guiding them to appreciate the environment around them, to explore new interests, to respect each other and themselves, and smile through it all. That sums up what Camp Olson has been doing for 65 years. Have a great rest of your fall, let your memories of this past summer warm you this winter, and come back to Camp Olson next summer. Page 8 The Birch Log A Message from our Camp Director Lindsey Abrahams The past four summers have been ones of growth for Camp Olson. Our camper population has squeaked up each year as our camps have been filled to capacity and we have been able to add trips and programs where the focus has been on Wilderness Trips away from camp. On top of that our facilities have grown with the rebuilding and renovation of the Dining Hall, White Palace, important program additions and much more. What is less visible is the growth we’ve had where it really counts. We have been pushing each year to ensure that our camper experience is better than ever before. We feel the number one factor in each camper’s experience comes down to the staff that they interact with. Working at a summer camp is not easy. It is incredibly challenging physically and emotionally. It is crucial that we are able to recruit and hire the best possible staff. Once hired our staff need to be provided with in depth training, and the care and support they need to be successful throughout the course of the summer. This is why we have been doing our research to make sure that we remain competitive in terms of pay and benefits with other non-profit camps in our surrounding area. We have revamped our staff training, adding important sessions that help prepare staff to work with the changing needs of today’s youth. The addition of the Assistant Director, Demi has allowed us to focus more on the well-being of our staff. Demi focuses on our new mentor programs, and self-care offerings for staff. Having an addi- tional person on the management team also allows us more time to work through any issues staff may be struggling with as well as provide them tips to improve rather than only responding to crisis. You can learn more about our Mentor programs and Self Care offerings in other articles in this issue. It has been exciting to be a part of these changes at camp. Camp is adapting to the growing and changing needs of our society. As a new generation enters the working force as camp counselors we are ready to prepare them to be the best counselors possible and continue to provide a north woods experience for our campers for years to come. New Staff Lounge >A Benefit to Our Staff > Which Benefits our Campers The new Staff Lounge is located between the White Palace and site for the new staff housing (com- ing summer 2020). The lounge is a private space created just for our staff. It provides a space for staff to rest and recharge, make connections with other staff, and enjoy some air-conditioned leisure in their time off. It includes a full kitchen, multiple sitting areas, desk space and wifi, storage lock- ers, TVs, air-conditioning, fireplace, board games and pool table. Though the lounge is off limits to campers, they reap the benefits of healthy staff. The staff lounge became a pivotal part in lifting staff morale and was also a venue for our Staff Appreciation and Self-Care Siestas. What our staff had to say: “The staff lounge is a great and much appreciated addition to camp. It is a great place for staff to relax and de-stress for a few minutes in between work periods and for friends to chat for a bit.”. “I think the staff lounge is an amazing way to connect all of the staff together. Most of the people I met this year was in the staff lounge.”
The Birch Log Page 9 Horseback Riding for ALL For those of you with a riding camper in your family, you may have noticed that for the first time we have removed the gender designation on our riding camps offered. The original thought behind offering only so many riding weeks for boys versus girls was based on the simple fact that there are less boys who sign up for riding. By offering less riding camps for boys we hoped to consolidate the guys so that they were more likely to have other boys to interact with while at the corral. Though it certainly hasn’t changed that we mostly serve girls riders, about 89% of riding campers are girls, we decided to make a change. Our hope is that by making the program more accessible to our male campers perhaps more will join in the program. It’s no secret that in the United States the horseback riding world is dominated by women. This however is not the case globally. In many countries, horseback riding is a very macho sport that only men participate in. So what’s the deal, why are we different? Why can’t everyone appre- ciate some time bonding with the 1000+lb mem- bers of the Camp Olson family? Well, hopefully with the opening of all ses- sions to boys that will at least take any schedul- ing conflicts off the table. We also are conscious about having male staff working at the corral to help provide a role model for our young male campers. Armando Noel and Mohamed Roble LIT III - Isle Royal Backpacking Trips have been awesome additions to our corral team At the end of each summer we send out invitations and we hope to have them return. We will also for campers to join us in our advanced Leadership continue to work with our new and returning staff Development Program, specifically, LIT III, a 9 day to help develop more staff to fill this role. Page 10 The Birch Log What is the Assistant Camp Director? In April I joined the team of full-time staff, rounding us up to five. With Camp’s growth in programs, participants, and projects, it was a necessary (and likely overdue) addition. The two questions I get most often are: “How was your summer?” and “What do you do”? It was a fantastic summer and I am delighted to be back. Despite being away from camp for over four years and coming back to new buildings, more horses, new generations of staff, and a lot more campers, it felt like I was nev- er gone. That is one thing that I dearly appreciate about camp: It’s Timeless. This summer was one of ebb and flow. With the additional person, it was a practice trial of divvying up duties and finding ways to use our resources to better support Camp and its’ needs. The position is still a work in progress, but to simply put it, I oversee the counselors and campers. I will handle the hiring and oversight of our counseling staff, including Counselor Coordinators, Counselors, and ACs; help with behavioral issues; communicate with parents; assist with camper registration; assist with staff training; and help with various other Camp events, fundraising, and updates. Next year, I will also oversee the LDP Coordinator and instruct lifeguard training. Sometimes you may also see me helping in the kitchen, leading a trail ride, driving the crash boat, or dressing up for theme days. Supporting our staff... The faces below represent only 5 of the 120 seasonal staff members that fuel the engine of YMCA Camp Olson. Great fuel = Great Camper Experiences! Camp Olson’s number one priority is our campers. Our staff are here to care for the well-being of our campers and create an experience that is fun, safe, and memorable. Ensuring a positive and cultivat- ing experience for our staff, ensures a positive and cultivating experience for our youth. In order to preserve well rested, healthy, energetic, and attentive staff for our campers, we have implemented some new programs this past summer, including the Staff Lounge, Mentor Program, and Self-Care Si- esta. I look forward to continuing to evolve and strengthen these programs to meet the needs of our staff and preparing them to be stronger counselors. Mentor Program … This summer, we began a Mentor Program for new staff to get to know and learn from senior staff. Each week mentors and mentees checked in with each other in small group set- tings to see how their previous week had gone and to answer and questions or alleviate any anxieties for the coming week. This program allowed new staff to become acquainted with the ins and outs of camp, build community, and have a peer they could turn to when they needed to talk. Mentors were able to learn and practice leadership, problem solving, and listening skills. Self-Care Siesta…Working at a summer camp is one of the most rewarding positions a young adult can have; though it is also one of the most challenging. It can be mentally and physically exhausting for staff to work 24 hours a day, 6 days per week for an entire summer. And although taking time to care for ourselves sounds simple, it is often overlooked. Once per week, staff are invited to partici- pate in Self-Care Siesta which is an optional activity before afternoon program areas begin. It is a time that staff can build community and use peer support, relax, or practice skills to care for them- selves. Some activities this summer included a spa-day, journaling, Would You Rather?, and mindful- ness.

Page 12 The Birch Log International Staff A Cultural Experience for our Campers Cameron McKnight joined us for the summer of 2019 from Glasgow, Scot- land. He was hired through Camp America, an organization that helps young people from foreign countries to camps using a J1 visas in order to add cul- tural experiences to youth at American summer camps. Each year we work with a variety of organizations like this to help enrich the culture of camp with folks from around the world. Cameron was an awesome addition to the camp family and plans to return next summer. His application is in and we’re excited to discuss what position he might be interested in filling for his sec- ond summer. During the 2019 summer we had staff members from Scotland, England, Spain and the Coast of Ivory. This summer I was fortunate enough to stumble my way into becoming a staff member at Camp Olson YMCA. I had signed up for the entire summer in this foreign place with no idea what would lie ahead. I had never been to the Mid-West before, never mind the Northwoods! It was an intimidat- ing and daunting thought, but the second I arrived, pulling into camp I felt instantly like I had always belonged there. Never did I feel out of place or as if I was intruding. There Is such a familial feeling you get when you are amongst the people of Camp Olson. You are always met with hugs and smiles and not a single person there doesn’t want you to feel like you are living a dream. And live a dream I did. In a matter of days, I forgot that it wasn’t somewhere I had always been. I was made to feel as though I had always known Camp Olson. The staff and management go above and beyond to create such a magical environment for every soul who enters the grounds. Seeing the way that Camp allowed the children to truly come out of their comfort zone was fantas- tic. The environment allowed kids to be whoever they wanted to be and gain confidence in such an invaluable way. As an outsider, experiencing this was incredibly impressive. My time at Camp Olson was the best time of my life. I made friends for life and gained countless skills I will carry with me for life. I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity and can’t wait to come back! 65th Anniversary Silent Auction will send 20 youth to camp in 2020! Camp Olson is very grateful for all the donors and bidders at the 65th Anniversary silent auction. Over 70 items were available to be bid on, from homemade crafts, artwork, autographed books from alumni authors, camping equipment, memorabilia from our past, and amazing adventures. Two of the most competitive items were for a quilt donated by the Longville Quilters Club and a week-long stay at an amazing home in Big Sky, MT donated by Paul and Pat Julsurd. All totaled the auction gener- ated just over $10,400 for our scholarship program.

Page 14 The Birch Log Fishing at Camp Olson Outside of Turtle Races, if Longville, MN is known for anything, it’s for fishing. The pristine waters that surround the fair city we call home are full of pike, bass, muskie and much more. Fishing is a big part of our northwoods culture and what it means to spend time in the outdoors around camp. As you know, camp is situated on Little Boy Lake which is part of the Woman lake chain of lakes. Woman lake is well known for its premiere fishing. I would argue that Little Boy is even better. This is because it shares its water and a similar fish popula- tion to Woman, but because it isn’t as well known, it isn’t as regularly visited by local anglers and those visiting our area. On top of Little Boy Lake, we do the main part of our fishing at camp on Cooper Lake. Cooper is not technically a private lake, but it has no public access and we share with only a few quiet cabin owners, so we have it almost all to ourselves. On Cooper, camp- ers can learn and practice the more techni- cal aspects of fishing as they explore the back bay of the lake and experiment with both lures and live bait. The cherry on top of fishing at Olson is of course our three shurd lakes. Since these lakes are completely private, the fish popu- Eagle Scout Project Benefits Camp lation is all but untouched. Fishing campers will have a few more programming surprises in store as we work with the 2020 Fishing Director to develop a solid curricu- lum. The Birch Log Page 15 Family Opportunities Fun for the Entire Family Every year, after summer youth camp is over, Camp Olson transforms into a Family Camp for 2 weeks. Family Camp allows families to stay and play in our rustic cabins while enjoying all of our great programs together. Grandparents, parents, meanwhile have the mornings free to do as they like: Mom’s and Dad’s horseback rides, windsurf and sailing lessons, sauna, mountain bike or a book on the beach are standard morning fare. Afternoons and evenings are programmed to include the whole family! Other highlights include Breakfast rides to the Shurds, Fishing trips, the Beach Skit, Friday’s all-camp Regatta and so much more!
