THE BILLERICAY SCHOOL A MATHS & COMPUTING COLLEGE School Road, Billericay, Essex, CM12 9LH Tel 01277 655191 Email info@billericayschool.com www.billericayschool.com Dear Parent/Carer, This is obviously a time of great anticipation and excitement as your child begins their secondary school career. Once again, the relationships we pride ourselves on forging with our families will commence in a rather different way to previous years. We have not been able to visit primary schools as we would normally do, but please be assured that we are gathering lots of relevant information to help us best prepare for the arrival of year 7 in September, and will do all we can to make the transition process from primary to secondary as smooth and as personal as possible. In choosing The Billericay School, you have initiated a seven-year partnership which we know will provide the opportunities, skills and qualifications your child needs to progress as a well-rounded citizen to Higher Education, employment and beyond. Children need to be engaged in their own learning if they are to be successful and we expect our students to work hard. The school will provide them with a wealth of opportunities. We are committed to providing a stimulating learning environment where every child will be stretched and nurtured according to their individual needs. We also offer an extensive range of extra-curricular activities and it is hoped that your child will participate fully in every aspect of school life. In addition, parents and carers have a vital role to play in the home-school partnership. We welcome your interest in all that we do and appreciate your support in ensuring that the school’s high standards of uniform, behaviour and work are reinforced at home. Please also monitor your child’s planner, which is an essential communication link between home and school. School is to be enjoyed. Your children will make friends for life, learn in a variety of interesting ways and flourish as a result of being engaged in all that the school offers. Staff at The Billericay School look forward to working with you and your child to ensure that they fulfil their potential. Please watch our Welcome Video: https://vimeo.com/425562867 Other virtual resources and video tour are located in the Admissions section on the school website. Please continue to check for updates on the Admissions/Year 6 to 7 September 2021 Intake section, and I would also ask that you please ensure that your child brings their Student Induction Handbook with them on their first day. We greatly look forward to meeting your child in September. Yours sincerely, Mrs C. Pastoral Care On entry, your child is placed into a vertical tutor group within one of five Houses, led by a Head of House. This means that they will share their form with students from every year group. They will usually keep the same form tutor throughout their school life and as students leave the form at the end of year 11, new students join in year 7. The form tutor works with everyone during form time to develop transferable and independent study skills, good peer relationships and a sense of community responsibility. We are very proud of how our older students assist our younger ones and as a result develop essential teamwork and leadership skills themselves. The form tutor will be your child’s first point of contact and will always be able to help or advise them or you, as will the Head of House. We also have an extensive Pastoral Team at Student Services who will help take good care of your child. Students’ progress is monitored throughout the year with assessment and monitoring, a parents’ consultation evening and an annual report. Individual appointments to see staff can be arranged at other times by making contact with the school. We pride ourselves on the positive behaviour in and around the school. Discipline is firm but fair and our students respond well to encouragement, praise and reward. When a sanction needs to be administered, it usually consists of a warning, detention or referral to your child’s Head of House or other senior staff. In exceptional cases, the Headteacher may exclude a child from the school for a fixed period of time. Who’s Who? Mr Mohammed CEO Mr Berry Mrs Berry Acting Deputy Headteacher Headteacher 2

Personalised Learning SENCO: Mr Beckett The Personalised Learning Team is responsible for supporting students with special educational needs. Importance is placed on providing support for students, which enables them to take part in all lessons with their peers. Resources are, therefore, channelled into ensuring needs are met in mainstream classes, where special educational needs personnel work alongside class teachers to facilitate full access to the National Curriculum for all students. Students needing to develop their reading, spelling, or numeracy skills receive additional support from the SEND department, in many cases working on programmes tailored to their individual needs. The progress of students with Education Health and Care Plans, or those on the SEND Register are monitored and reviewed regularly. Parents/carers and students are invited to meet with the member of staff co-ordinating the student’s SEND provision, to share successes and achievements and to set targets for the coming term. Provision for Inclusion For students who, for whatever reason, cannot attend mainstream lessons for a period of time, provision is available in the KS4/KS3 Inclusion Base. This is ground floor provision, with extensive IT facilities, where students can work in a small, supportive environment. 6
The Resource Based Learning Centre More than just a library! We see the role of the Resource Based Learning Centre as central to raising standards and maximising progress for all students through developing independent learners who read widely for pleasure and information. We aim to encourage an enthusiasm about reading through a diverse range of material including books, magazines, audio-visual material such as talking books, CDs, DVDs, and providing access to I.T. facilities, including the Internet with over forty computers. The RBLC aims to provide: A wide variety of resources to support students’ personal development and interest. A stimulating and exciting environment to support private study, group enquiry discussion and practical activity that is accessible to all. The RBLC aims to help students develop: Information and data handling skills Research Skills A passion for reading The RBLC is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm each day. Students’ involvement in the organisation of the centre is encouraged through Library duty in Year 8. An induction programme, which all students complete during their first weeks at Billericay School, enables the students to become involved in the use and organisation of the centre at a very early stage. The centre aims to support students’ personal development and interests as well as a passion for books. Enjoyment and enthusiasm is also fostered through book readings and visits by authors and active participation in a Book Club. We also aim to instil a “reading culture” throughout the school via a variety of programmes that lead to reading growth for every student. The centre prides itself in responding to the needs of students and making available relevant curriculum material. Suggestions for further improvements and developments are always welcomed. The Centre is a place for all! 7
Homework Homework is of great importance at The Billericay School. It is used to develop understanding of a subject or an idea; to introduce new subjects and ideas; to reinforce work studied in class; and perhaps most of all to develop the habit of working and thinking for oneself. A Year 7 homework timetable is on the school website and will indicate what subject a student should be working on at home. Students will be issued with a student planner at the start of each school year in which they will be required to note the details of each homework set, write down independent study or revision activities, and record information discussed during Learning Conversations with their form tutor. It is important that the planner is kept up to date for two reasons. First, if a student knows precisely what has been set, they are more likely to complete homework satisfactorily. Secondly, the student planner is a means of keeping parents informed. Teachers sometimes write in the planner and parents may do so as well. In the latter case, it is the responsibility of the student to draw the comment to the attention of the member of staff concerned. Form tutors regularly check planners and parents are asked to sign it at the end of each week. Parents sometimes ask us how much help they should give their children in completing homework. There is no straightforward answer. Much depends on individual circumstances, but we would suggest that encouragement, interest and the checking of work provide invaluable support to children; the more the better, providing you are not doing it for them! Testing your child regularly on the information on their Subject Cue Cards is a key way you can support their learning. One of the best ways to help your child with their school work is to make sure they read regularly. Reading with your child will improve their writing and spelling and enable them to be more confident in all subjects. All Year 7 students should have a reading book with them every day and they will take part in our Accelerated Reader programme. Study Support We are very proud of our wide ranging extra curricular programme for students of all years and all levels of ability. As our school motto suggests, we care about success and success can be achieved in a variety of ways. We believe in students having skills in a variety of areas. Thus, our curriculum caters for a wide range of talents and interests from sport, music, languages and drama to chess, risk takers and sci-fi club. All students are encouraged to attend a range of extra-curricular clubs and societies on offer. Information is available on the school website and updates are regularly published on the TV screens around the school. Our Resource Based Learning Centre is open to students from 8.00am each weekday and after school until 4.00pm. The Personalised Learning Department offers a Homework Club for the first 20 minutes of each lunchtime. 8

Authorising absence during term time is at the school’s discretion. 10
Buses Some students that travel from either Basildon or Wickford use bus services that operate privately. Parents may buy a season ticket or students may pay on the bus for each individual journey. There is no Education Authority service that operates – all services are private. We do, however, have a good relationship with the operators; we support them fully in maintaining standards of behaviour and discipline. Should you wish to use a private service, you may contact NIBS Buses on 01268 767870. Change of Address/Home Information Parents should notify the school (Data Provision Office) immediately in the event of a change of contact details (address, telephone number, email address etc.) Financial Assistance The school aims to ensure that no student is prevented from attaining any of the school’s standards because of lack of finance. Therefore, in some cases where families are experiencing financial hardship the school may be able to assist by subsidising certain activities or items. “Friends of Billericay School” which is the school’s PTA charity also provides a small grant each year to our hardship fund. Applications to this fund are dealt with in the strictest confidence and should be made in writing (to Mr Berry, Acting Headteacher or Mrs Berry, Deputy Headteacher). Students who have entitlement to free school meals attract additional funding to support their education, so all parents who may be entitled are urged to apply, to ensure their child benefits both in terms of the free meal and additional educational support. For further information please contact the School Office (Finance Department). Newsletters Regular newsletters are published on the school website during the academic year. School Catering Students either have a meal provided by the school’s catering service or bring a packed lunch. Secondary school meals give a much wider choice to students. Starting with morning breaks, students are able to choose and purchase from a range of hot and cold snacks. Lunch, served in the dining room, offers a choice of a hot meal from the traditional counter, a fast food bar and cold counter trolley. Vegetarian dishes are also available. During the course of the year the catering staff hold ‘special promotion’ weeks and ‘themed’ days. The school achieved National Healthy School Status in March 2008 and gained re-validation ever since. 11
School/Parent Communication The MyEd Parent App The Parent App allows an accessible way to communicate and share information with you, our parent community. As your son/daughter’s school, we want you to feel as much a part of their education as possible and the increased use of smart phone technology provides an opportunity to do this. We use a free parent app that gives you access to a range of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is happening at school. The app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices. The MyEd App works by providing parents with an overview of key school events and once your child is on roll, individual student conduct, attendance, achievement, timetables and academic monitoring information via the ‘My Student’ area. Further information and instructions of how to upload the App can be found on the school website (via the ‘School Portal’ tab). School Website www.billericayschool.com Our school website provides a wide range of detailed information including school policies, future events and copies of school documentation. Twitter and Facebook Parents are able to follow The Billericay School via Twitter on @Billericay_Sch The feed provides parents with up to date news and information. The school also has a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheBillericaySchool/ that also provides information that may be useful to parents. Please be aware that The Billericay School does not host or endorse any other Facebook pages/discussion groups through other areas of social media. Any such groups should not be interpreted as being ‘official’ communication from the school and we would encourage you to always refer to the school website/Twitter/Official Facebook page or contact the school direct if you have a query or concern, rather than relying on unsubstantiated information from unofficial sources. We would also ask that individual students, parents and teachers are never mentioned on social media as this potentially breaks data and privacy regulations. Email: We use an electronic information system to email school information, events and student related notifications in an efficient manner. I would ask that you please ensure the school has your most current email address and notify us if your email address changes. ParentPay ParentPay allows parents to use our school online payment system to make dinner money top-ups, school trip payments, payments for music lessons and other online payments for your child, quickly and easily. (Please bear in mind that during peak activity times transactions may not appear on accounts instantly). If you have any queries regarding ParentPay please contact the school office. Upon receipt, please activate the account or, if you already have a ParentPay account, just click ‘Add a child’ and enter the codes provided. Please ensure accounts are activated in advance of the new school term in September and money added should your child wish to purchase food on the first day of school. 12
Transition Worries: Moving from primary to secondary school: Results of a research project We want the transition from primary to secondary school to be a positive experience. The Billericay School recently took part in a research project with Anglia Ruskin University, to find out how students felt after they moved into the school from their primary school. The researchers asked students in Years 7 and 8 about their experiences of transition. We thought you might be interested in the results and we have added some extra ideas that you might find useful. Most students questioned said they were nervous and worried before the transition. However, unanimously told us that they soon settled in. Students said The Billericay School is good at providing induction days and giving chances for new people to look round and see what their new school is like. New students are often worried about getting lost, but they can ask others and they get maps to help them. Students gave overwhelmingly positive opinions about their time shortly after their transition to their new school. They all agreed that the school has: o Great lessons and teachers o Great food Advice from our students for parents: Stay calm, help us to be organised, tidy and on time. Please try not to worry, if there is a problem the school will contact you. It is a good school, with good subjects. Staff are good at helping children settle in and make progress. At The Billericay School, we do all we can to make the transition from primary to secondary school a positive experience. It is normal for students and parents to be worried about moving to a new school, we understand that there is often a level of anxiety about whether or not your child will be happy and thrive within The Billericay School community. Happily, evidence from our students shows that, not only do we enable our students to make good progress academically; we also place great importance on allowing students to develop as resilient, independent and unique individuals, with a broad variety of accomplishments. In return, all we ask is that students are polite; arrive in school on time, smartly dressed, equipped and ready to learn. We can then work in partnership with the student, and their parents/carers, so that they can achieve their potential. Billericay School – Students 4 Students (Student Support) S4S is a team of trained students who work together to help our school to be an enjoyable, safe and happy place. If you are worried about something, please come and speak to one of the team and allow us to help you. You can find us in C27a at lunchtimes, around school at other times or you can email us on s4steam@billericayschool.com More information can be found on our notice boards, the school website and on the monitors around school. 13
School Uniform Please visit www.simmonds-ltd.com to purchase uniform. The school shop will be open (by appointment only) between Monday 23 August to Friday 27 August for returns/exchanges and to purchase additional items. Appointments can be booked via the Simmonds Ltd website. Reminder: School Equipment It is expected that students are fully equipped for lessons (pens, pencils, ruler etc.) Students must also be equipped with a calculator. The recommended calculators are the Casio FX 83GTX or 85GTX models. Our teachers are specialists in these models. They perform all functions required for the new GCSE and are, in our opinion, the easiest to use and most intuitive on the market. The fx-83GTX can be purchased from the school at a reduced rate. Students are also expected to be equipped with plastic Science goggles, as they will participate in a range of practical lessons. In order to encourage good handwriting, we recommend that all students use a fibre tipped handwriting pen (for example the ‘Berol’ black fibre tipped handwriting pen or WH Smith own brand) and a purple ballpoint pen to use in their exercise books (to write their responses to teacher feedback). Your child will be given a set of these items on their first day. Additional items/sets may be purchased from the school. In order to make it as convenient as possible for students to be properly equipped, we will also offer the facility for students to buy the above writing equipment from the main office by making the charge against their cashless catering account (dependent on sufficient credit available). PE Clothing: Our PE Department often receive enquires with regard to acceptable clothing for lessons. Below is a summary of suitable items that we hope you will find useful: The Boys PE kit comprises of • Black/White Reversible Rugby Shirt (compulsory) • White Plain polo shirt (compulsory) • Black sports shorts (compulsory) • Black football socks for outdoor wear (compulsory) • White indoor socks for summer and indoor wear (compulsory) • Football Boots • Sports Trainers (not fashion sports shoes) • Black swimming shorts (compulsory) • Black tracksuit bottoms (to be used at the discretion of the member of staff) • Optional plain black sweatshirt/1/4 zip top (small logo would be permitted) The Girls PE Kit Comprises of • White Plain Polo Shirts (compulsory) • Black sports shorts (compulsory) • White Sports socks (compulsory) • Sports Trainers (not fashion sports shoes) • Black Swimming Costume (compulsory) • Plain Black sweatshirt/1/4 Zip top (compulsory) (small logo would be permitted) • Plain black lycra sports leggings (not fashion cotton) Students are not permitted to wear Hoodies. 14
Getting involved yourself…. Friends of the Billericay School ‘FOBS’ The Friends of the Billericay School (FOBS) would like to extend a warm welcome to all parents of new students at The Billericay School. The school encourages close ties with parents, but one of the closest links is provided by FOBS. This bridges the gap informally between school and home and helps to harness mutual aims on both sides in the students’ interests. Having a child at the school brings automatic membership to FOBS, and you are welcome to come along to our meetings. They are friendly and informal occasions when there is an interchange of information with a senior member of staff. In this way, parents are kept informed of school matters and any areas of general concern can be aired. As well as being a forum and an organised body of opinion in support of school interests, FOBS organises social events which serve to bring parents and staff together, reinforcing the sense of community. The social events are also a means of raising the extra funds that provide the vital ‘icing on the educational cake’. There can be great satisfaction in organising a function that is enjoyed by literally hundreds of people as well as raising hundreds of pounds! We would greatly welcome your ideas and involvement. FOBS’ steadiest source of income is from its ‘200 Club’. It is open to any friend of the school. For just £1 per month you will be entered into the monthly and major bonus draws during the year. The top prize is £200 and many smaller amounts are also paid out. At least 50% of the income must be paid in prizes and the rest benefits the school. To join, please complete the 200 Club standing order form which can be found on FOBS page of the school website. Another simple way to support the school is by making online purchases via Easyfundraising – a percentage of money spent is donated to your chosen cause and all the main online retailers participate in the scheme. Please follow the link to find out more and sign up: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/fobsbillericay/ Children coming here for the first time are welcomed by the school, and their parents can rely on an equally warm welcome from FOBS. Their help will really be appreciated in the years ahead. They will be able to share in the life of the school and be of genuine assistance in the school life of all students. You may contact us directly via fobs.crew@gmail.com, visit the FOBS page on the school website or find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BillericaySchoolFOBS/ 15
