THE BATON Dear Friends, We are pleased to present the Savannah Philharmonic’s 11th Season. This will be an espe- cially exciting year as we continue our search for our new Music Director. We have attracted a gifted group of conductors to Savannah to direct a season full of glorious music. Our season opens with one of the most spec- tacular showpieces in the symphonic repertoire, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. You’ll also experience monumental works like Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, and Mozart’s incomparable Requiem. You’ll enjoy fun and fascinating shorter pieces, including new works by Anna Clyne and Missy Mazzoli, Marquez’ Danzon No. 2, Rossini’s Overture to the Barber of Seville, and Bernstein’s Overture to Candide. Our 11th Season soloists represent a diverse group of special talents. Featured guest perform- ers include American Traditions Competition gold medalist Mykal Kilgore – best known for appear- ances with Postmodern Jukebox and as a cast member of NBC’s The Wiz Live! – and renowned trumpeter Thomas Gansch. Three exceptional musicians - pianists Ian Parker and Nathan Lee, and violinist William Hagen - will dazzle you with beloved concertos. In October, pack your baskets and head to Picnic in the Park. Our Holiday Pops concert, at Christ- mastime, remains must-see entertainment for the entire family. The Larsen Musician Spotlight series is curated by Savannah Philharmonic Concertmaster, Dr. Sinisa Ciric. Each performance is a collabora- tion between the orchestra and local ensembles including the UGA chamber orchestra, Mikki So- dergren with the Desdemona string quartet and the Savannah Arts ensemble. The Savannah Philharmonic is a vital cultural asset for our community. Thank you for your support. We’ll see you in the audience during our 11th season! Mendelssohn’s violin concerto warmly celebrates great friendship (and virtuosity), and we conclude with Prokofiev’s unbridled homage to the human spirit. Presented in part by Charles C. 11TH SEASON MISCHIEVOUS MUSICIANS Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra January 18, 2020 – 7:30 pm Lucas Theatre for the Arts Janna Hymes, Conductor Nathan Lee, Piano IBERT Divertissement MOZART Piano Concerto No. 12, in A major, K. 414 BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 8 in F ROSSINI Barber of Seville: Overture Who says music has to be stuffy? Mozart and Rossini are perhaps the music world’s best-loved comedians, but Ibert is no slouch either. His Divertissment, originally written for the theater, pokes fun at famous music of the time, including a send-up of Mendelssohn’s famous Wedding March. Even notoriously-grumpy Beethoven joins in the fun with his lighthearted Eighth Symphony. Presented by Nathan Lee, Piano Susan & Ron Whitaker SAVANNAHPHILHARMONIC.ORG
THE BATON MODERN TO MAJESTIC Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra February 8, 2020 – 7:30 pm Johnny Mercer Theater Enrico Lopez-Yañez, Conductor Thomas Gansch, Trumpet MÁRQUEZ Danzón No. 2 GILLILAND Dreaming of the Masters III TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 in F. minor, Op. 36 Tonight’s program pushes the boundaries of what we consider “classical” music. Márquez’ Danzón No. 2 will have you dancing in the aisles, and Gilliland’s Dreaming of the Masters III sounds like it’s straight out of a jazz club. Then for his Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky threw out the rules of how a symphony was “supposed” to be written, gifting us with one of his greatest masterpieces. Presented in part by Charles C. Beethoven and Mahler’s works capture passions at their most dramatic and most refined. In contrast, in Schubert’s “Great C-Major” you can almost hear his pen flying across paper, trying to keep up with his effortless inspiration. Ryne Cherry, Baritone SAVANNAHPHILHARMONIC.ORG

THE BATON Friends, Savannah Philharmonic’s eleventh season is going to be thrilling! Audiences will have the opportunity to experience talented guest conductors from around the world. These are special times for a special place. I was recently asked, “what makes Savannah great?” I paused and replied, it’s Savannah! There is not one stand-out factor, but many. From the walkable design of the landmark district, the historic architecture, the tree canopies and lush gardens, the rivers and low country terrain, the vibrant neighborhoods and communities surrounding the city, and the people. The energy and appreciation for the arts in Savannah is contagious, and we want to invite everyone to engage with Savannah’s Philharmonic. We are proud to produce and present world-class music, educational and outreach programs for all to enjoy. On behalf of the entire staff, we are honored to fulfill the mission of the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus and we look forward to leading this valued community-wide asset into the next decade of success. THE BATON INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE Integrative medicine, the practice of treating the patient holistically: combining mind, body and spirit, is an often-overlooked aspect of patient care. Music can play an important role in this holistic healing process. The Magic Flute. Monthly, members of the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus present a rendi- tion of Mozart’s Magic Flute for children receiving care in the Memorial Health Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah. The twenty-minute comedic performance brings smiles and laughter to the young patients, their families and caregivers. Our musicians perform, sing, dance, and frolic in profes- sionally designed costumes to create a truly authentic production. Following the show, each child receives a souvenir tiara and/or kazoo (flute), coloring book, and crayons. This imaginative presentation brings the joyful power of music to the healing process. Savannah Philharmonic works with both the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute and the Nancy and J.C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion to provide professional musicians who interact and perform live music for patients waiting to receive or while receiving cancer treatments. Patients and fam- ilies have expressed deep gratitude for the live music during their challenging treatments, and doctors have seen a wonderful positive effect. Presented by Stacie Court Joseph & Marie Rozman PHILHARMONIC IN THE STREETZ Developed to take orchestral music into neighborhoods around the city, “Philharmonic in the Streetz” is a casual afternoon gathering aimed at bringing live music to members of our community who would likely not attend an orchestral concert. “Philharmonic in the Streetz” brings together neighbors, students, and civic leaders, giving us the chance to celebrate music with both new and familiar faces. Free and open to the general public, Savannah Philharmonic presents this bi-annual event to share music and the arts with the entire city of Savannah.
