WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK APRIL 21 - 27, 2022 SPECIAL EVENTS AND PERFORMANCES AT NEWPORT NEWS ATTRACTIONS AND PERFORMING ARTS VENUES APRIL 21ST LIONS BRIDGE DAM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UPDATE The Mariners’ Museum and Park April 21; 6 p.m. The Mariners’ Museum and Park is hosting a community meeting with the City of Newport News, inviting area residents to learn about the Lions Bridge Dam Improvement Project. This meeting will take place in the Main Lobby of the Museum. The dam at Mariners’ Lake was built in the 1930s before dam safety regulations were developed. Today, several changes are required to bring the dam into compliance with 21st century regulations such as: armament of the entire downstream embankment; rehabilitation of the primary outfall culverts; and reconstruction of the low level inlet structure. Join us to gain insight into this project. Museum and City representatives will answer questions at the end of the meeting. 100 Museum Drive, 757-596- 2222. Click here for more information.
REVEALING RHYTHMS OF ICE AGES WITH PALEOMAGNETISM Virginia Living Museum April 21; 6 p.m. For over 50 years, the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and its predecessor programs have recovered and archived long sedimentary records of Earth’s climate and geomagnetic histories for international scientific study. In 2019, IODP drilled Antarctic proximal sediments in the Scotia Sea’s “Iceberg Alley” during Expedition 382, recovering a more than 3- million-year sedimentary sequence from which we can learn about Antarctic Ice Sheet history and Southern Ocean dynamics. Sediment layers in these drill cores can be dated by identifying times when Earth’s magnetic field flipped polarity and comparing those events to the well- established geomagnetic polarity timescale. This chronology can then be used to study how Antarctic climate varied from the warm Pliocene about 3 million years ago through the ice age cycles of the Pleistocene. 524 J. APRIL 22ND CIVIL WAR LECTURE: SIEGE OF FORT PULASKI The Mariners’ Museum and Park April 22; 12 p.m. This event will be in person and live streamed. Advance registration is required. This lecture is presented by John V. Quarstein, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center. Fort Pulaski was constructed after the War of 1812 to defend the port of Savannah, Georgia. When it opened in 1843, it was the best fortification design – built with more than 25 million bricks. Nearly two decades later, the introduction of rifled cannons made stone and brick forts obsolete. Across the Savannah River from Fort Pulaski was Tybee Island on Cockspur Island. Captain Quincy Adams Gilmore, West Point graduate and future Union general, occupied the Island to mount 36 cannons, including rifled guns with a range of more than four miles. On April 10, 1862, Gilmore began the assault on Fort Pulaski. The rifled projectiles breached one of the fort’s walls. The 36- hour bombardment resulted in the Confederates’ surrender on April 11, 1862, proving the power of rifled cannons and changing siege warfare forever. 100 Museum Drive, 757-596-2222. Many of these are excellent plants for attracting butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife to your yard. The Virginia Living Museum’s horticulture staff holds this annual sale as a fund-raiser, but the real goal is to introduce the gardening public to the incredible variety of native plants that will do well in the landscape, and to educate gardeners about those which are better left in the wild. Native plants are good choices for area gardeners because such plants tolerate the area’s weather and serve as food and shelter for area wildlife, while also providing a good show in the garden. 524 J.
