Welcome to Thame Credit: Brill Photography Like many traditional market towns, Thame grew from Anglo-Saxon roots but has since developed its own individual character whilst preserving its rich history; ancient medieval buildings stand alongside Georgian and Victorian architecture. The high street boasts regular markets (see pages 10- 11), many award-winning and unique shops as well as an abundance of cafés and eateries (see page 29) to suit every taste. These are found alongside attractions such as Thame Museum (see pages 14-17), The Players Theatre (see page 35) and Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve (see page 49), to name a few. Thame has a rich calendar of Community Events (see page 22-23) for both residents and visitors. Each year the town host hugely popular music, arts & literature, and food festivals, as well as our annual Carnival (see page 37) —all not to be missed. The town has so much to be proud of and the Town Council is passionate about working in partnership with the community to keep it welcoming to all. This guide is an introduction to all Thame has to offer, so sit back and enjoy! Referencing in this Guide Throughout the guide you will find details of businesses who call Thame home. If the business is based in our town centre you will find a reference displayed in the corner to show you where they are located on the map overleaf. This shows the grid reference and shop number on the map found on the next page. 5

Love Local Shop Local Thame’s streets are home to a great variety of fantastic shops, cafes and restaurants. What truly makes this shopping experience unique are the many independent businesses that choose to call Thame ‘home’. A short stroll will reveal jewelers, gift shops, arts & craft galleries, clothes & accessories boutiques, bookshops, florists, beauty products, specialty food delicatessens and a fantastic toy shop. There is something truly special about shopping in an independent shop; you will find things that have been locally produced and grown, quirky one- off items not available at national chain stores, and hand crafted treasures created by artists and designers. Our independent business owners do what they do because they are well informed and passionate about their products and they will typically take more time to get to know you, their customer, going the extra mile to help you and to ensure you are a satisfied customer. If that is not enough to convince you, there is real evidence that shopping locally boosts the local economy and is environmentally friendly. Did you know ? If you spend £1 locally, 50p-70p circulates into the local economy. If you spend £1 out of town or online, only 5p circulates into the local economy. Small businesses have endured the Blitz, 3 day weeks and the recent economic down turn and despite these hardships they continue to innovate, grow and assume ‘business as usual’. Let’s avoid having a ‘clone street’ with the same shops as everywhere else and support our local businesses. 12

Local History & Thame Museum The history of Thame spans around six thousand years. In 2015, archaeologists unearthed evidence of life in Thame from the Neolithic and Iron Age, the Roman period and the early Anglo Saxon period beneath the Thame Meadows housing estate, opposite Lord Williams’s Upper School. The most significant find was an early Neolithic causewayed enclosure, which dates from time when farming was just beginning in Britain. Recorded by the archaeologists, before the houses were built, were a Neolithic henge, Iron Age round houses and drove-way, an extensive Roman agricultural settlement, and Anglo Saxon sunken featured buildings. Earlier, a Bronze Age burial mound had been found in Thame High Street, and two Bronze Age spearheads were found at the football club. These spearheads are currently on display in Thame Museum, among other local archaeological findings. Thame appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, centred around the Anglo-Saxon-built St Mary’s Church and belonging to the Bishop of Lincoln. Thame became linked to the cathedral at Lincoln through a prebend, which meant that the church tithes raised from the people of Thame went to fund a series of canons of Lincoln Cathedral. A residence, or Prebendal House, was built for them. Its gatehouse can still be seen from Priestend, at the top of the High Street near St Mary’s Church. The canons were often wealthy churchmen. The Thame Hoard, found near the Prebendal House in 1940, with its rings and coins, gives us a glimpse of their wealth. One of the rings in the Thame Hoard was a reliquary ring and it bore the two-bar cross, which Thame took as part of its emblem. A large scale replica of this ring is on display at Thame Museum. 14
LOCAL HISTORY In the twelfth century the Bishop of Lincoln decided to create a new town at Thame out of his farmland, called ‘New Thame’. Thame’s wide High Street, with its angled sides and narrow entrances at each end, was deliberately constructed to accommodate the market. The earliest surviving market charters date from the 1180s, granting permission for the Tuesday market and Michaelmas fair. Over time, market stalls in the open space of towns like Thame started turning into permanent structures. Some of the buildings around the Birdcage in Thame, and the Birdcage itself, are examples of buildings built within the open marketplace. Thame is noted for the way the medieval plan of the town has survived. In Tudor times, Sir John Williams became the lord of the manor of Thame. He had served Cardinal Wolsey at Hampton Court, and was related to Thomas Cromwell, Chancellor to King Henry VIII. Sir John Williams was later made Baron Williams of Thame, or Lord Williams, and through his will founded a grammar school at Thame. The original building, finished in 1571, can still be seen next to the Barns Centre, but Lord Williams’s School moved to a new site on the Oxford Road in the nineteenth century. A number of buildings from the Tudor period still survive and can be seen around Thame. In 1968, an original set of wall paintings installed by a Thame merchant in the Elizabethan era was discovered during the renovation of an old Tudor house in the Upper High Street. These wall paintings have now been transferred to Thame Museum, where visitors can explore the meaning behind the historic images and view them in an interactive display alongside other surviving Tudor artifacts. For many centuries, the shape and size of Thame hardly changed at all, as Thame’s livestock market, its tradesmen, its merchants, and its many pubs served the people of the surrounding area. Evidence of Thame’s thriving historic trades can be seen at Thame Museum, where you can find a locally-made grandfather clock, a historic shop window, objects used by tailors, pharmacists, opticians, builders, sweet shops, and many more. The Cornmarket and the Buttermarket are present-day reminders of Thame’s heritage as a market town. 15
LOCAL HISTORY In the nineteenth century, Thame began to expand. Terraced houses began to appear along the newly built East Street and Park Street, often to house agricultural workers moving to the town from the countryside. New Victorian buildings began to appear in the High Street, including the Town Hall and a County Court (which has now been repurposed as the home of Thame Museum). The livestock market moved to a new site in North Street in the 1950s, after 800 years of being in the High Street. The market still takes place every Tuesday, as does the annual fair, rooted in medieval tradition. Thame railway station closed in the 1960s, after 100 years of operation. Today the popular Phoenix Trail follows the line of the track where trains once ran between Thame and Princes Risborough. As education and literacy became more widespread, additional schools joined Lord Williams’s School in educating Thame’s children in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The ‘non-conformist’ Royal British School on Brick Kiln Lane (now John Hampden School in Park Street) opened in 1836. In the 1870s, Brunswick House girls’ school opened in the Tudor buildings originally used by Lord Williams’s School, but in 1908 moved to the Mansion House in the High Street (now the Co-Op). Barley Hill and St Joseph’s Schools were opened in 1973 and 1975, to accommodate the increasing numbers of children growing up in Thame. A Victorian school desk can be found at Thame Museum, along with historic children’s toys, school uniforms and books from Thame’s many historic schools. Children can also explore the museum and Thame’s history with child-friendly object trails, activities, stories and costumes. With thanks to Thame Museum for providing the images and content. 16

Thame: a murderously good town! Did you know that Thame is one of the most frequently used filming locations for the popular ITV series, Midsomer Murders? 6.5 million people watch Midsomer Murders in the UK and, as one of our biggest TV exports, millions more watch it worldwide. The programme is still going strong after 22 years, and Thame locations continue to feature; Thame appears in episode 1 of the most recent series. The town appears as Causton, or as any one of many villages in the fictional Midsomer County. There are now 22 filming locations in Thame, including the Town Hall, Thame Museum, Market House, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, The Spread Eagle and Swan Hotels, The Coffee House, The Black Horse and many more. Why not ‘Visit Midsomer’ while in Thame? Guided Walking Tours Take part in a guided walking tour from 11 am on Wednesdays between April and October. Tours start from inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, Thame, OX9 3AE), a filming location. Tickets cost £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thamemidsomer. Alternatively, simply turn up on the day and pay in the Museum. Bespoke Guided Tours If the advertised tour times don’t fit in with your itinerary, bespoke tours can be arranged. For more information, contact Tony Long at thamemidsomertours@gmail.com. The guides are all volunteers and much of what is raised is donated to worthy causes at the end of the season. Last year over £800 was donated to the Mayor’s Charities Fund and a further £800 was given to Thame Museum. Thame’s Twin Towns Montesson, France Montesson is a commune of around 16,000 people, in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France, about fifteen kilometres north-west of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine. The town has been the seat of a lordship since the Middle Ages, with the original village inhabited by farmers and foresters "pioneers". Today Market Gardening is a large part of the economy, feeding the city of Paris. The natural environment and outdoor leisure activities are very popular, with great opportunities for both walking and cycling, many paths lead to the towpaths of the Seine. Traditions and festivals are also important. In September a local festival takes place known as "festival of the pâté à la Carmen". It dates back to the end of the nineteenth century and includes fairground attractions, fireworks, dancing and a long parade of floats. Images courtesy of Thame.net History of the Twinning In 2001, then Mayor of Thame Cllr Don Butler signed a Twinning Charter with Montesson to maintain permanent bonds between the two towns, to promote exchanges of all kinds between inhabitants with the aim of ‘fostering greater mutual understanding, and to create a true spirit of European Unity’. The Thame and District Twinning Association now works to achieve this vision by facilitating visits and exchanges between the people and associations of Thame and Montesson. Every year, usually in September, they organise a trip to Montesson, and visitors from Montesson come to Thame every May, as well as to take part in our annual Christmas Light Switch-On. TWIN TOWNS Sinaia, Romania Sinaia is a mountain town close to the Transylvania region of Romania, and is 70 miles northwest of Bucharest’s International Airport. It is named after the Sinaia Monastery, around which it was built. Over 10,000 inhabitants live there. The altitude varies from 2,516 to 2,822 feet. The most important tourist attractions are Peleș Castle, the summer home of King Carol of Romania, Sinaia Monastery, and the Bucegi mountains which is a popular destination for both hiking and winter sports. History of the Twinning In 2007, Cllr David Bretherton, was approached by local residents who suggested establishing a twinning between Thame and a similar size town in Eastern Europe. Following several Thame and Sinaia exchange visits by local residents between 2009 and 2010, Thame- Sinaia Friendship Association was formed on 9th July 2010. The Twinning Charter between Thame and Sinaia, previously ratified by the two town councils, was officially signed in Sinaia, by Vlad Oprea, Mayor of Sinaia, and Cllr Nigel Champken-Woods, then Mayor of Thame, during Sinaia Forever Festival, on 28th September 2012. Following the twinning, Thame-Sinaia Friendship Association has established a permanent link with Sinaia ASPE Cultural Association to carry out exchange projects which engage residents of both twinned towns. The group aims to encourage further education about and knowledge of each other’s cultures and languages among members of all ages and in the towns of Thame and district (England) and Sinaia (Romania) at large, and regularly hosts social and charity events. Christmas in Thame Thame sparkles during the festive season with it’s packed calendar of events, gorgeous shopping, and the fabulous atmosphere of twinkling lights. Christmas Lights Switch-On Friday 6 December 2019, from 4pm Thame’s Lights Switch—on is a highlight of the season, with attractions, performances and the all important visit from Santa. This year is no exception. Alongside Santa’s grotto, two adorable Reindeer will be returning following their huge popularity last year. Refreshment stalls will be laden with hot food and drink — including the all–important mulled wine — to keep you warm; the iconic lantern parade, that engages the children at our three local primary schools will return, gift stalls will line the High Street and there will be some fabulous performances from local talent to entertain you throughout the event. This year the timings are changing, and the event will start at 4pm for you to enjoy the attractions and browse the stalls on offer. The light switch-on will take place at 6.30pm, and then, if you haven’t had a chance to see Santa, the activities and stalls will stay open until 7.30pm when the event will end. Festive Town Trail Thame’s Christmas Trail Competition means you could turn on the lights this year. For Thame, community is central at Christmas time. We love getting everyone involved so, throughout November, we run a competition with 24 businesses hiding a Christmas-themed image in their shop fronts for you to find. If you enter the competition you could win the chance to turn on the lights! More information will follow later in the year—make sure you sign up to the Town Councils’ newsletter so you don’t miss out. www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/news/newsletter-sign-up/ Santa’s Sleigh Christmas isn’t Christmas without a visit from Santa on his sleigh! With the incredible dedication of Thame Round Table, he makes his away around the streets of Thame, supported by voluntary groups, to visit children and raise funds for worthy causes. You can find out when he will visit your street, so you can come out and see him by using the ‘Santa Tracker’ provided by Thame business, Pentangle. www.santatracker.pentangle.co.uk 38
