TEN TORS 2022 FOREWORD EVENT COORDINATOR COLONEL GARY MCDADE T he past two years have been disruptive in so many ways, not least the absence of Ten Tors in 2020 and a virtual event in 2021. I’m therefore incredibly pleased that it’s back to normal this year, a year in which we celebrate the 60th Ten Tors event, at the same time that Dartmoor marks its 70th year of National Park status. Perhaps most symbolically, as we gather back on Dartmoor, we should also reflect that it will be the first time we will do so without His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at our figurative helm following his 58 years as Patron. The event is about challenge, determination and resilience, words that we have visited a lot over the pandemic. But Ten Tors is the teams. Add to that a strong team of also about teamwork and developing a love military personnel, civilian agencies and and understanding of nature and I know we volunteers, making a total of around 12000 will see all these attributes on display this people involved to make Ten Tors happen, weekend. I still remember taking part over and you’ll understand why it’s an event that 30 years ago, so I’m confident you’ll make the Army is genuinely proud to plan and enduring memories of your own. deliver. TEN TORS 2022 POLAR PREET Army Officer, Physiotherapist, Nordic Skier, Ultra-marathon, Runner, Endurance Athlete. A ntarctica is the coldest, highest, driest and windiest continent on Earth. Nobody lives there permanently. I didn’t know much about the continent when I first started planning and that is what inspired me to go there. Hopefully doing something that pushes me so far out of my comfort zone will inspire others to believe in themselves and push their boundaries. There are only a few female adventurers that have completed a solo, unsupported trek on this continent. It is time to add some more names, diversity and to make history. “Nothing is impossible” I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me to be a role model. I want my 8-year-old niece to grow up without boundaries, knowing the possibilities of what you can achieve in life are endless. 02

TEN TORS 2022 TEN TORS REFLECTIONS CAPTAIN BETHAN WATERS to the military. I was inspired by seeing the members of the Armed Forces supporting the event, including the University Officer Training Corps (UOTC), and on starting at Bristol University to study Music in 2010 I immediately signed up to join Bristol UOTC. I was delighted then to be able to give back to the event by helping out each May at Okehampton Camp, including doing the presentation area announcements in 2011, 2012 and 2013 where I so enjoyed celebrating the achievements of everybody crossing the line and receiving their medals. It was a combination of these formative experiences Waters on With my father Andy that were the catalyst for me to decide to join ing from the Royal Military Commission the Army as a career, and after graduating I t (2015) Academy Sandhurs started training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2014.
