Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts | 50th Anniversary 2020 4
On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Festival Committee and our hundreds of volunteers, welcome to the 50th Anniversary of the Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. We are so thrilled to host you at our new home in the beautiful Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Since our founding 50 years ago, the GFA has been a trailblazer, and this bold step forward is the natural evolution of our organization, as well as for the City of Tampa in expanding the downtown boundaries westward. We hope you enjoy this new location and all it has to offer. Our primary goal with this relocation is to offer an enhanced visitor and artist experience, and we hope we have succeeded. With any big change there are bound to be hiccups and we will endeavor, as we always do, to make each festival the best yet. This year’s festival has been two years in the making and it wouldn’t be possible without the dedication, passion and resolve of our members, all volunteers numbering more than 100. A special thank you to the families of our members for sharing them with us – we know how valuable their time is. We owe a great deal of gratitude to our title sponsor Raymond James, our many other sponsors, partners, and collaborators and especially the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to bring such a high caliber juried arts festival to Tampa Bay. And this festival wouldn’t be at the top of each artist’s list if it weren’t for the amazing reception they receive from our community and the many savvy art supporters who purchase and collect their artwork, aware of how prestigious it is to be accepted into our festival. Thank you for being passionate supporters of the arts and helping sustain the livelihood of these professional artists. Our over 250 juried artists represent a diverse range of artistic styles, mediums, and price- points. The artists invited this year are representative of a mixture of returning artists and artists exhibiting for the first time. We love having that blend of “familiar and new,” which helps keep the festival fresh. Being a part of this festival and interacting with our volunteers, artists and visitors, whether from the local community or beyond, has been one of the greatest joys of my life. We hope you have a wonderful experience this year. Explore, get inspired, try a new activity, discover your inner creativity, become a collector – these are our hopes for you. May you leave with beautiful memories, original works of art, inspiration, and shared moments of connectivity with artists and our wonderful Tampa community. We are proud to present the 23rd Annual Emerging Artist Program of the Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts The Emerging Artist Program is intended to support and exhibit local and regional emerging artists. The program sponsors artists who have not previously exhibited their work professionally to be a part of the Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. This unique opportunity allows emerging artists to exhibit their work, interact with successful professional artists and gain valuable experience that will help them in their future careers. A limited number of emerging artists are selected to participate in the Festival through a jurying process. Once selected, these artists are allowed to participate at no cost, provided individual display tents and given a $250 expense allowance. Although emerging artists do not compete against the other artists in the festival for award money, they are eligible to receive the $1,500 B. T. Videtto Emerging Artist Award, given to the best emerging artist in each year’s festival. The 2020 Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts is proud to showcase the work of 15 emerging artists, representing a diversity of styles and media. O P E N TO T H E P U B L I C Tampa River Center | Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Art’s 50th anniversary 2020 festival image: HEAD FIRST II, by Meaghan Farrell Scalise, incorporates several elements that celebrate Tampa Bay’s vibrancy and culture, represented in this colorful world with the patterns of coral, swimming fish, palmetto and banana leaves, pink sunset clouds and a starry night sky. In ancient times — as well as today — the oval or egg shape suggests rebirth, fertility and even immortality. The multitude of circles represents commitment, community or all cyclic movement. The sun’s rays represent antique skeleton keys in a nod to our rich history. The multicolor stripes are the many layers of enriched soil, often “Leave the normal, the mundane, called horizons. These layers play an important the black-and-white way of thinking role in supporting life on land and filtering our behind. Jump in head first into the rivers and waters. The plants and mangroves in unknown, the colorful, the this painting give importance to Tampa Bay’s daydream of it all.” complex ecosystem, their significance as habitat – MEAGHAN FARRELL SCALISE is clear for the river and wildlife. 12
Art Collectors in Training Program Kids taking ACTion for kids Presented By We invite young people, ages 6 to 14, to participate in the 11th annual Art Collectors in Training (ACT) program. ACT gives young people the opportunity to view and purchase artwork donated by artists participating in the festival. Donated art will be displayed and sold in ACT’s “kids only” art gallery. Most items can be purchased for $5 or $10 and more valuable artwork will be priced accordingly. Artwork is labeled with the artist’s name and booth location so the young art collector and their accompanying adult can have the opportunity to meet with the artist face to face. Last year, more than 97 artists donated 400 pieces of art to the ACT program raising approximately $2750 for the The Spring of Tampa Bay and NOMADstudio. Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts | 50th Anniversary 2020 Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of The Arts, one of the country’s premier outdoor art events, has a rich history in the City of Tampa. The forerunner of the art festival was the juried art exhibit at the Florida State Fair held in Tampa every February in conjunction with the city’s Gasparilla pirate invasion. In 1970, art activists realized that the informality of the State Fair exhibit had brought diverse, high- quality artwork to a new audience, and the concept of a sidewalk art festival was born. Many changes have occurred throughout our 50-year history. From our beginnings on Whiting Street, the festival has moved from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden to our current home in Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Award money has grown from its original $3,900 total to $80,000. Some things that haven’t changed are the strong and continued support of the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County and a dedicated team of festival volunteers. INTRODUCING Local Artists shaping Tampa Bay’s creative landscape For a better Tampa Bay. SUNDAYS IN THE PR96552_FEB20
Inspire. In a word, Raymond James believes in the transformative power of the arts. Perhaps the most meaningful thing you can do with success is share it. And when you do that with care and conviction, giving can be an art form – one Raymond James has been practicing since 1962. Today, we carry on the charitable legacy of our founder Bob James in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIFE WELL PLANNED. Raymond James is proud to support Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. RAYMONDJAMES.COM/COMMUNITY Raymond James® is a registered trademark of Raymond James Financial, Inc. 19-CC-CR-0567 EK 1/2020
