Michigan Education Association Summer Conference July 26-28, 2022 Saginaw Valley State University Saginaw, MI i
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 2022 MEA Summer Conference! It is so wonderful to be with you again. For educators, summer has always been a time to recharge, renew, and restore. Let this gathering be a step along that journey for you in this most difficult time in our lives and careers. Your commitment and dedication to students, to your profession, and to this union bring me hope. Even in the darkest days of the pandemic, you stepped up to new roles, innovated, advocated, and persevered. We stood together in the storm. Assembling now at a conference offers a chance to link arms and redouble our efforts to strengthen public education at a critical moment when the central role that schools and education play in building strong and vibrant communities has been so brightly illuminated. We all know our public schools are the foundation of our democracy, and we have many pressing issues to address, from school funding to climate change, continuing effects of COVID-19, and the need to ensure equity and inclusion in an increasingly diverse world. Here we organize our collective strength to build a better tomorrow. Here you will find information on bargaining strategies, organizing initiatives, lobbying priorities, legal issues, professional development, and communication plans. Learn about the issues. Hone your skills. Develop strategies. Build political action to create equitable systems and lasting change. Educators like you who step up every day to lead make MEA an unwavering voice for school employees’ rights, working conditions, and benefits; for best practices; for healthy neighborhood schools; and for social justice across our most vulnerable communities. Summer is a time of renewal and reflection. Let it also be a season of recommitment to the ideal that every child deserves a quality public education. We live in an era of unprecedented challenges, but together we are more than up to the task. Paula J. Herbart, MEA President 2

SPECIAL PRICING Local Presidents Did you know that you (or someone else from your local that you send as a designee) can attend the 2022 Summer Conference for little or potentially no cost? Registration fees are prepaid for a president/designee for the Summer Conference. (It is NOT necessary to send payment with registration.) Indicate on the form that you are the Local President (or designee and include President’s Designee form). The registration form (both pages) can be either mailed or scanned and sent via email to conferences@mea.org. At this time, the system does NOT allow for local presidents/designees to register online. Expenses for local presidents or their designee will be reimbursed based on the following: • Each local president/designee will receive a gift card to offset gas costs and any bridge tolls. The amount of the gift card will be based on the number of miles driven: • Up to 100 miles - $25 card • 101 – 250 miles - $50 card • 251 – 500 miles - $75 card • 501 miles and above - $100 card Only members who actually drive are eligible for a gift card. These will be available to sign for and pick up at the MEA Registration area Thursday morning. • Lodging of up to $130 per night will be reimbursed for two (2) nights (Tuesday and Wednesday). This requires a detailed/zero balance receipt. The detailed receipt must include the detail of the charges (room rate, taxes included, etc.) AND show that payment was made so there is a zero balance due. ALL participants are responsible for making their own lodging accommodations. • Meals are non-reimbursable. The following meals will be available at the conference: Wine and Cheese Reception — a variety of hors d’oeuvres and beverages on Tuesday after sessions, Wednesday breakfast, Wednesday lunch, PAC Reception — a variety of hors d’oeuvres and beverages on Wednesday from 6:30 - 8 p.m., and Thursday breakfast. All other meals, including evening meals are on your own and not eligible for reimbursement. A Governance Expense Voucher will be given to you on site; the form must be returned postmarked on or before August 31, 2022 (a scanned or electronic copy is acceptable). The completed and signed voucher with zero balance/detailed hotel receipt should be sent as soon as possible to the conference assistant at the address listed on the voucher, or to conferences@mea.org. Because only the overnight rooms for local presidents/designees will be reimbursed, it is suggested that the voucher and hotel receipt be turned in Thursday morning before leaving the conference – when the gift cards will be available. Reimbursement for contractual lost wages for year-round employees requires appropriate documentation on employer letterhead. It is the president’s (or designee’s) responsibility to obtain such documentation and it must be submitted on or before August 31, 2022. Important Note: Vouchers must be signed and mailed in; electronic copies via email are acceptable. Keep a copy of the voucher and receipts for your file. Any Governance Expense Vouchers or request for reimbursement of contractual lost wages postmarked after August 31, 2020 will NOT be processed. OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS Participants are responsible for making their own overnight accommodations. Saginaw Valley State University does not offer overnight rooms. Breakfast will be served on Wednesday and Thursday and lunch will be served on Wednesday as part of the conference package. There are receptions on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. If you need to find overnight accommodations or restaurants, visit www.gogreat.com for a list of restaurants and activities in the area. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Some of the hotels in the area may cost more than the amount eligible for reimbursement to local presidents (or their designee). Please keep that in mind when making your reservation. Reimbursement will be made for the actual cost of the hotel – up to the $130 limit. 4

2022 CONFERENCE HAPPENINGS Bring Your ID when Registering On Site For the security and safety of our members and the organization, all conference participants will need to show a government issued photo ID to get your registration packet on-site. Please make a note to bring your picture ID with you when you pick up your registration packet at the conference. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Bring Your Own Bag Door Prizes If you bring your own conference bag to use during the 2022 Summer Conference, you will be entered into a drawing for some great prizes. Do not worry if you do not have a bag from a previous MEA conference, any bag will do. There will be a limited supply of bags available for those that forget their bag, or do not have one. Wait List for Full Sessions While session sizes are limited for various reasons, MEA also recognizes some fill quickly during the registration time frame. To make sure any seats that become “open” during a given session are filled on a first come first served basis, there will once again be a wait list created for all full sessions. If a seat in a current full session opens up, the first person on the wait list will be moved into that session and notified of the change. If you receive your confirmation email and there is a “Y” in the Wait List column, please be sure to select a session during that same session time that has available seats. This will ensure you get a session during that session time in case a seat does become available. If you have any questions about the wait list process, please contact the conference assistant at conferences@mea.org. Internet Access for Conference Participants Saginaw Valley State University has complimentary Wi-Fi available for all participants. More information will be provided in your registration packet. Exhibit Area Have questions about your MESSA insurance or what products/services MEA Financial Services offers? Wondering what’s happening with MEA’s website, PAC or the MEA Retired group? Check out the exhibits at the conference. The exhibit area will be in Curtiss Hall and will be open from 12–4 p.m., Tuesday, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Wednesday, and 8–10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Exhibitors will include, MEA Financial Services, MESSA, MyMEA.org, student loan forgiveness information, Proud PAC Activist, candidates running for MEA and NEA positions, and much more! 6

MEA SCECHS & ESP CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS DO YOU WANT/NEED SCECHS OR ESP CERTIFICATE CREDIT? For both types of credit, please note the procedures: 1. Session attendance forms will be provided in the registration packet for those who register for the certificate program credits. PLEASE INDICATE ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE SCECH OR ESP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM CREDITS. 2. Complete and submit attendance form at the conference Most of the procedures to document attendance in approved sessions remain the same, that is, until you get to the final step. Please note the following: 1. Give your form (SCECH or ESP) to the presenter or facilitator, if one is assigned, when you arrive at your SCECH or ESP Certificate approved session (that way he/she knows you are taking the course for credit). We suggest you arrive at your session a few minutes before the start of the session. 2. Attend the full session. 3. Pick up your signed form from the presenter/facilitator as proof you have attended that session for the entire allotted time. 4. Return your completed form to the registration area at the end of the conference or before leaving the conference. Due to Michigan Department of Education regulations, ALL SCECH AND ESP CERTIFICATE ATTENDANCE FORMS MUST BE TURNED IN BEFORE LEAVING THE CONFERENCE. The forms will no longer be accepted via U.S. Mail after the conference. We hope that by streamlining this process, more members will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to receive free SCECH and ESP Certificate credit. We look forward to seeing you at the conference! 13
