SUMMER 2023
              1
A Letter from the Internships co-chairs
Greetings,

On behalf of the APPLES Service-Learning program and the Carolina Center for Public Service, we extend
our deepest gratitude to you for your shared interest in public service and commitment to community
engagement, especially amidst this pandemic.

This packet details all of the available APPLES internship positions for Summer 2023. The organizations
cover a spectrum of professional development opportunities offered to UNC-CH students, including
communications, marketing, event planning, fundraising, program development and teaching. Each
APPLES internship position offers students one-of-a-kind, developmental experiences in areas of
education, public policy, journalism, public relations, advertising, business, psychology, sociology and
many more.

All of the internship opportunities are designed for students to gain professional experience. APPLES
interns agree to complete up to 320 hours of work, receive a $4,000 stipend, and enroll in a one-credit
hour service-learning course in the Spring semester through UNC’s School of Social Work and Carolina
Courses Online.

As former interns, we can personally attest to the power of the APPLES internship program. Through
sustained partnerships, APPLES and its community organizations provide mutually beneficial relationships
that enhance both student learning and community partner success. While students receive a stipend and
course credit, their contributions assist with projects that uphold the mission and values of the community
partners. Together, this dynamic relationship creates a unique and impactful internship experience.

We encourage you to use this packet as a resource — a survey of all of your options. Information about
each internship site and the respective position description is detailed in this packet. Should you have
additional questions, be sure to reference the APPLES website or contact APPLES.

Applications are due Friday, January 27, 2023.

Thank you for your interest in APPLES Service-Learning Internships and your commitment to public service
and the community. We wish you the best of luck. Stay well.

Sincerely,

Community Empowerment Fund
Durham, North Carolina
Intern positions: Summer Intern (2)

Transportation needed: No car needed; intern opportunity can be done completely remote

Website: https://communityempowermentfund.org/

Organization description: The Community Empowerment Fund is working to end the racial wealth gap
by supporting over 3,000 Members, annually, in reaching their employment, housing, and finance goals.
Our approach combines person-centered support with advocacy and financial services that pursue
equity. CEF’s work is grounded in recognition of the detrimental impacts of systemic racism on Black and
Brown members of our communities and we value the leadership of people with lived experiences with
homelessness and poverty.

Internship details Over the summer, interns are expected to hold around 10-15 hours of
"Member/Advocate Meetings." This is our main method for service delivery at CEF. Members come in
and work with 2 Co-Advocates in a 1-hour long meeting to work towards the Member's goals, usually
around housing and financial security. The remaining hours are filled with project work, team meetings,
and full group meetings. Interns are assigned to one of our Leadership Teams based on their interests
and our needs for that summer. They can be placed on our Housing, Resources, Member-Advocate
Coordination (MAC), Member-Intake/Orientation, Advocacy, and Training Teams. Since both APPLES
interns would be full-time interns, they will definitely be placed on the MAC Team. In this space we
discuss Member situations and case conference around solutions. This team relays back this
information, along with other important updates for Advocates, back to the part-time interns. They will
also be placed on 1-2 other teams and complete project work around this. Some projects these teams
are working on is our Sustainably Housed Project, our Homebuyers Pilot Program, our Fair Chance
Business Certification Program, and more. Interns always have more than enough to do and while we
have things that need to get done and our own priorities, we really try to provide the intern with
opportunities to learn around their specific interests in the social work/affordable housing/economic
justice sphere.

                                                                                                     22
