What is OLLI at ISU?
Mission Statement
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a forum for adults of all academic and
economic backgrounds to learn about a wide variety of subjects they find interesting
and engaging.

The Purpose of OLLI at ISU
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Indiana State University (OLLI at ISU)
is a membership program open to all adults but geared towards individuals age
50 and older, regardless of academic background, and is a program of Indiana
State University. At its center are learning programs designed by its members and
tailored to suit their interests. These programs (lectures, courses, and special events)
are offered without concern for grades, credits, or prerequisites. Indeed, the only
requirement for membership in the Institute is a desire to learn.

The Institute emphasizes collaborative leadership and active member participation.
The primary responsibilities for programs are assumed by Institute members, all of
whom volunteer their time. However, it is only because of the substantial support
of the Bernard Osher Foundation and Indiana State University that the Institute can
offer these unique learning opportunities to residents of the Wabash Valley.

The United States experienced major waves of immigration during
the colonial era, the first part of the 19th century and from the 1880’s
to 1920. Many immigrants came to America seeking greater
economic opportunity, while some, such as the Pilgrims in the early
1600’s, arrived in search of religious freedom. Immigration has clearly played an important role in American history, so why is it
so misunderstood and controversial? Join us as we get a better understanding of some of the issues surrounding immigration as
well as a better understand of the history of immigration in the United States.

Zachariah Mathew will share his personal experience of his immigration process to the United States from student visa to
greencard.

Angela Adams will discuss the questions and issues surrounding undocumented immigrants from DACA to deportation.

Donald Maxwell will give us a brief overview of the history of immigration in the United States from first immigration laws
enacted to the shift from states’ passed immigration laws to the Supreme Court declaring regulation of immigration a federal
responsibility.

Christopher Elmore will explain immigration topics from visas, green cards, cost of immigration, the process of how to get into
the country and what it takes to stay. We will also clarify many terms used that are not understood like the green-card lottery.

Date: Mondays, June 11, 18 & 25, 2018

Cost: $15

Join us as we look at the issue of water stress from a conservation, political, and
environmental view. Learn what is being done and can be done to conserve water,
as well as the political issues being faced around the world because of water stress.
Lastly we will look at how this has become a problem from a scientific prospective.

Water Conservation with Nick McCreary
Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and activities to sustainably manage the natural resource of fresh water, to
protect the hydrosphere, and to meet the current and future human demand. Population, household size, growth and affluence all
affect how much water is used. Factors such as climate change have increased pressures on natural water resources especially in
manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. Many US cities have already implemented policies aimed at water conservation, with
much success. Learn what is being done and what you can do to help conserve water for the next generation.

The (International) Politics of Water with Mike Chambers
While many Americans are familiar with the political squabbles over water in the western U.S., there are similar dynamics at
work in other countries where water is a scarce resource. This session will examine conflicts over water in other countries as well
as between other countries, and will draw particularly on examples from Asia.

Water Crisis in U.S. West with Jeffery Stone
Much of the U.S. West’s water supply is under threat as rapidly-warming temperatures melt more snow-pack annually than
is created by precipitation. Each spring, melted snow and ice from the Rocky Mountains recharges up to 80 percent of the
Columbia, Missouri, and Colorado River Basins. Together, these basins form the primary water source for nearly 70 million
people in an area plagued by droughts—including Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. The new study, by the
U.S. Geological Survey, appears to confirm a key source of the droughts: Snow-pack has been disappearing over the past several
decades. This session will explore why snow-pack plays such a key role and why it has been changing over the last decade.
