Dara P Antia Memorial Lecture in Pune 23/3/2011 Padmavibhushan Professor P Rama Rao, delivered the prestigious Dr. Dara P Antia Memorial Lecture in Pune “India has to pay serious and urgent attention to the exploration, mining, mineral processing, extraction and scaling up production of critical metals and materials such as energy materials and rare-earths. IT industry has been swallowing most of the engineering graduates in India for the Page 28 of 40
Indian Institute of Metals Pune chapter www.iimpc.com past few years. And now, nano science research is upstaging R&D in mining, geology and engineering materials, which is an unfortunate development. Eco-informed materials development is the key to prosperity of a nation and there are plenty of exciting opportunities for the young professionals to make a mark in both unexplored fields in basic materials research as well as in meeting engineering challenges in materials development in order to satisfy the ever increasing needs of the society in a cost effective and sustainable manner” – this was the inspiring message of Professor P Rama Rao’s Dara Antia Memorial Lecture delivered in the jam packed auditorium of the College of Engineering, Pune on March 23rd, 2011. Professor Rama Rao, a distinguished metallurgist and an accomplished professional leader in education and research, selected the theme – “Glimpses of Materials History” for his thought- provoking lecture organized by the Indian Institute of Metals, Pune Chapter and Dr. Dara Antia Memorial Lecture Committee. Professor Rama Rao began his lecture with a brief description of several remarkably innovative processes and products developed by our ancestors in India namely, the bronze dancing girl of the Indus valley civilization (goes back to 2500 BC), discovery of zinc smelting in Zawar, Rajasthan which was at least 1800 years ahead of the rest of the world, wootz steel (from which Damascus swords were made), which was produced in India in thousands of tons and exported as a precious and a rare commodity, the non-corroding Delhi iron pillar, Nataraja statues made of panchdhatu (Cu, Zn, Sn, Au, Ag) by the lost wax process, bidriware (Cu-Zn alloy with silver inlays) and Aranmula metal mirror from Kerala which was the first intermetallic (Cu-30% Sn bronze) produced commercially by extremely slow cooling and precipitation – all these examples illustrating the engineering ingenuity and the creativity of people at that point in time. In his inspiring lecture, Professor Rama Rao covered a host of topics – about enhancing capabilities of engineering materials (for example, stiffening polymers, strengthening metals and toughening ceramics), about the materials as high technology enablers (examples include materials for the aviation turbine blades), unexplored fields in basic materials research (phase stability and equilibria, temperature-pressure environment for materials synthesis, potential at extremities of composition, chemical state, pressure, temperature and complex stress- strains and length scales) and urgent needs in the development of critical materials needed for sustainable growth of our country. He concluded his lecture with an appeal to the young students present in the auditorium to take up this exciting field of materials science and engineering which offers great opportunities for creative minds. Earlier Dr Baba Kalyani, the Chairman of the Kalyani Group of Companies and Bharat Forge, and the Chairman of the Dr Dara Antia Memorial Lecture Committee in his address, paid rich tributes to Dr Dara Antia as well as to the College of Engineering, Pune as an institution which has produced several outstanding professional leaders for the country and continues to attract the best students and continues to nurture the future leaders for India. Dr. Kalyani also highlighted the need to design and develop new processes and products - materials for our super critical and ultra supercritical boilers as an illustration of some of the challenges the metals industry is facing today. Dr Baba Kalyani while introducing the distinguished speaker remarked that Professor Rama Rao has very appropriately selected a topic related to Materials History, indeed a fine tribute to the legendary Dr Dara Antia who worked all his life for the advancement of education, research and industrial growth of metals in India.
