INTERVIEW YOUR FAMILY! As part of our 60th Anniversary celebrations we would like to engage the school community in an oral history project, gathering a set of interviews from former students and staff throughout the last 60 years of the school. Whilst this is not compulsory, we would love as many students as possible to interview parents, carers, siblings, and grandparents who used to attend the school in the last 60 years. When you interview your parent/carers, older sibling, grandparent etc, please can you either: • Type up the answers and email them to Johnathan.wayman@astrea-longsand.org • Record the answers on a phone and email the recording to Johnathan.wayman@astrea-longsands.org • Handwrite the answers and hand them in to Mr Wayman or to Admin / Reception and ask for them to be handed to Mr Wayman. • Any photos or Longsands items from the past would be greatly appreciated if you would be willing to donate them.

MATHS RETREAT Recently, we were lucky enough to be invited to participate in some extra-curricular maths lectures, led by mathematicians James Grimes and Katie Steckles, who coincidentally we also watched win ‘Only Connect’ on Tv the evening of the first lecture. This virtual maths retreat took place over the half term and we joined the lectures every afternoon. Logging on for the first time was a bit nerve wracking but everyone was really friendly and the tasks set were challenging but fun. We had a chance to chat to the other students and work together on some of the challenges – we recognised a couple of people from school too which was nice. We began the week’s lectures with some interactive games before moving on to explore topics such as graph theory, geometry and topology. One of our favourite parts was looking into properties and details of mobius strips, a torus and even Klein Bottles. We went on to take the simple game noughts and crosses and talk about how the game would be different if it were played on shapes such as these, instead of the regular 2d square. Here is a talk from James Grimes on Alan Turing and a demonstration of an original WWII Enigma Machine https://youtu.be/mcX7iO_XCFA During each session we were given a short break, and often divided up into smaller groups to chat about what we were doing. Katie and James were very engaging and they kept checking in with us all to make sure we were following ok, and to talk to us about our ideas. It didn’t feel like work at all and was a great opportunity to explore topics we don’t cover in the curriculum. Izzy and Amelia (10CLA and 10RSC)
Home Testing COVID-19 UPDATES Thank you all for your support with the lateral flow tests that you have been doing in school and now at home. We have now issued all of you, who have had three tests in school, with your test kit boxes for the holiday and your parent / carer will have received a copy of the letter you were given with your boxes. As a reminder, your test should be carried out each Monday and Thursday morning, prior to eating and drinking (or with a gap of at least 30 minutes since consuming food or drink). Results should be recorded using the NHS Test and Trace facility and also to the Academy by using the following link ASTREA COVID HOME TEST RECORDING. Further information about home testing can be found here Longsands Student Home Testing Information. If your lateral flow test is positive, please ensure you self-isolate and ask your parent / carer to book a PCR test. Words of the Week Monday Superfluous: If you have more of something than is necessary then it is considered to be superfluous to requirements. The essay contained a large amount of superfluous information. Tuesday Inane: This is an adjective that we use to describe something that is incredibly silly with no real meaning or importance. He was always making inane remarks. ENGLISH Wednesday Genial: This is another adjective that is used to describe someone who is very friendly and pleasant. The teacher had a genial manner about her. Thursday Fickle: This is an adjective used to describe someone who is likely to change their opinion or their feelings suddenly and without a good reason. We might sometimes describe football fans, as being a bit fickle. The supporter was slightly fickle in the way they supported their team. Friday Fastidious: This is an adjective used to describe someone who is giving too much attention to small details and wanting everything to be correct and perfect. Dad was very fastidious in the packing of his suitcase.
DIGITAL DIVIDE PROJECT Digital Divide Update Things are moving fast! Mrs Chilton has received delivery of the tools and equipment the students need from the Cambs Youth Panel and will be distributing them to our Year 10 and 12 students who are volunteering in this project with donated devices so that they can make a start over the Easter break. Here are just a handful of our 24 volunteers who have taken up the challenge to refurbish devices for disadvantaged students across the county. We are very proud of them all. The project is also able to support disadvantaged families from our own school community. This covers a wide remit including those experiencing financial hardship. If you feel the project could help you or your family please register on the Cambs Youth Panel website https://cambsyouthpanel.co.uk/computers-for-students
COMPUTING: CYBERFIRST The results are in! Our wonderful Year 8 Cyber First Girls team worked tirelessly in an intense semi-final on Friday 19th March. To have secured a place in the semi-final means that they were in the top 8% of 6,500 girls from across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and five English regions who took part in the first round of the competition virtually during lockdown in January this year. During the semi-final Longsands 0100 Girls team, were within the top five out of 20 teams throughout for the central region and were in 2nd place for a time, and at 3rd for several hours. They finished the event in 4th place and were very close to being selected as a wild card team for the grand final as one of the highest scoring teams from a mixed state school. We are incredibly proud of their achievement. The team discovered hidden talents and surpassed their own expectations. As participants they will be given the opportunity to attend some free Cyber First Girls development days later this year and we look forward to continuing to support the girls in future opportunities and will ask them to act as mentors for future entrants in the competition.

Young Carers Longsands Academy is committed to providing help and support for its young carers. In the YOUNG CARERS summer term, Mr Mykoo will be running a weekly Young Carers Club after school on Wednesdays. At Longsands we are aware that some of our students may be caring for a family member at home and may require support to attend and enjoy school in the same way as other students to achieve their potential. Young carers are encouraged to seek help and support by attending a school based young carers group and by using our effective referral system to access expert advice from the school nurse, the local Young Carers Services, Carers Trust Cambridgeshire and Centre 33. For further support or information please speak to Mr Mykoo in school, email him via anthony.mykoo@astrea-longsands.org or scan the QR opposite for more details regarding Centre33.

Science Challenge – Observing the skies SCIENCE Deadline extended until after the Easter holidays – still time to enter!
Did you know… Give-Aways, Ransomware, Hacking and Spying were all big in the news this week, at the same time coincidently that the computer science department were teaching some of those very topics to Year 8. Big data seems to be at the forefront of some of the issues going on this week. Big data can be classified as “extremely large sets of data that may be analysed computationally to reveal COMPUTING patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions”. In simple terms that’s data collected about you, me, business, government etc. that shows what we are doing, why we are doing it and when we are doing it so trends and patterns can be found and used either for or against us depending on the agenda of those collecting the data. So it is Elon Musk interesting that this week several things have happened… Elon Musk and Tesla: Have been accused of using their Tesla cars to spy in China. Musk the chief executive of the US electric carmaker Tesla, says his firm would be "shut down" if its vehicles were used for spying on China. His comments came in response to reports that China's military had banned Tesla cars from its facilities. The military had raised security concerns about the data collected by cameras installed in the cars. China is Tesla's largest market after the US, accounting for about a quarter of the firm's global sales in 2020. It also emerged this week that a Russian man in the US has pleaded guilty to plotting to extort money from Tesla. Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov is accused of offering an employee $1m (£721,000) to place ransomware in the computer network of the company's battery plant in Nevada. He planned to use the ransomware to steal company secrets for extortion, prosecutors alleged. The 27-year-old pleaded guilty on Thursday in Reno, Nevada. Ransomware attacks companies or organisations by scrambling their internal computer networks, stealing information, or locking users out. The attackers then demand large sums of money in return for ending the hack. The FBI said the planned attack on Tesla was stopped before it could take place.
Did you know… Play Station 5 users hacked NHS executive Helen Bevan’s two Twitter accounts, with nearly 140,000 followers, and then used the information to promote fake PlayStation 5 sales. The hack happened the day before Ms Bevan was due to COMPUTING lead an online event for thousands of people, and she had encouraged her audience to use Twitter as their discussion tool. Despite paying £110 to a third party to get her accounts back Mrs Bevan a realised that she had been scammed again after her accounts failed to reappear and rather than risk losing any more money she ended up waiting for Twitter restore the accounts for her. When she finally got access to her accounts she found dozens of direct messages from people asking about PlayStation 5 orders. Bevan says she has no idea how many fake sales were generated by the scammers but the PS5s were being advertised at upwards of $450 (£320). "They were following Walmart, Dixons, PC World, Target," she said. "They would wait for them to tweet about PS5s and then reply, saying we've got PS5s in stock now, DM [direct message] me.“ There were also Fleets - temporary Twitter posts - featuring photos of PlayStation boxes. Ms Bevan later had to explain to all who messaged her, having paid for games consoles, that she was also a victim of the scam.
Did you know… Give-Away scams are also becoming big business. Criminals create Twitter accounts that look like those of celebrities such as Elon Musk or billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya, who offer items such as bitcoin and a chance in many cases of doubling your money. It all looks very real and very efficient on the surface, but the reality is that you’ll end up with nothing. Researchers say scammers are making record- breaking sums in 2021. Giveaway gangs have already made more than $18m (£13m) COMPUTING in the first three months of this year, compared with the $16m made in total for the whole of 2020. Data also suggests the number of victims this year is set to eclipse previous years. In 2020 around 10,500 people fell for the scams, but already this year researchers say they have tracked 5,600 who have sent money. The graphs below show the reality of give-away scams in number of victims and money lost.
Did you know… TOP TIPS to beat Hackers and Scammers 1. Create strong passwords COMPUTING 2. On Social Media - use all available security settings 3. Never click on suspicious links 4. Install anti-virus software 5. Avoid public Wi-Fi 6. BE AWARE: If something sounds too good to be true – it usually is. Remember… Attackers are looking for easy targets. They have amazing systems in place that allow them to take over your social media account or computer, lock you out and then charge you to gain access back again.

Remote learning Well done for all your efforts to continue learning remotely. Please do let us know if you need any help or support. Recordings REMOTE LEARNING All live lessons on Teams are being recorded. This is really useful if you would like to play back part of a lesson, or if you were unable to attend the live lesson at the time. There has been a slight change to how recordings are accessed on Teams. Recordings will still appear in the Posts section on the class Team, but it is no longer necessary to download the recording before watching it. Recordings will also be stored in a folder within the Team, which can be accessed by following these steps: 1. Go to the class Team for the subject 2. Click the Files tab at the top 3. Then click on the folder called Recordings 4. Select the recording you would like to watch. 10 Tips for Students for Remote Learning Assignments We are pleased to share with you our 10 Tips for Students for Remote Learning. Some of your teachers might use the Assignments function on Teams to ask you to submit work. Mrs Chilton has kindly put together a short video to show you how to do this: Link to video: https://youtu.be/dnSHWqA3feE Instructions for remote lessons will continue to be set on Doddle.
