STRING ALONG WINTER 2018 VOL. 31, N0. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Although you won’t get this ‘til after the holiday, we want to wish all of you a safe, happy, and festive time of year. Ok, wishing for a little rest also! In the franticness of the season for musicians and teachers, we forget that so many different beliefs call for a time to congregate at this time of year for celebration of family, peace, and life. I know that I speak for our Board members in hoping that the season found all of those for each of you. As we rush to holiday concerts, fix broken strings for our students at the last minute going on stage, find missing music that had slipped behind your desk, rush in the traffic to yet another event, please take a minute to reflect on the positive effects that you have had on your students this year. You remain a stable rock in the middle of homelessness for many, political turmoil, fires that have affected so many of us, a changing tide about workplace pressures and behavior, and so much more. Music is what calms and centers us and our students. The discipline of rehearsal, the joy of a beautiful phrase played well together, the smiles on the parents’ and audience’s faces, all bring a focused, positive core to your students and yes, to you as a teacher-classroom or private studio. Breathe and enjoy the uplifting effect of your life and teaching on the community you serve. The new ASTA website, is really starting to provide resources for those of you wind/brass players who are lucky enough to teach strings as well. Joining us now will continue to increase your knowledge and awareness of all things string-related. Please feel free to reach out to me to chat about including ASTA in your professional memberships here at the end of 2017. The tax break and insurance advantages are only a few of the reasons to join with us in seeking excellence in string teaching. I hope that many of you are considering joining us in Atlanta for the ASTA National Conference! It is a wonderful event that always leaves us stimulated, challenged and informed about new events, teaching techniques and our colleagues across the nation. Wishing you a FANTASTIC ASTA 2018. This means January 18 is the first deadline and we expect many more will participate before the final deadline of February 22. If the schedule fills up for the date you select, we’ll offer later dates and locations for you. What happens in an ASTACAP evaluation? Each student (any age) performs the required scales for the level selected, an etude, as well as one solo (beginning levels), two solos (middle levels) or three solos (level 8-10). Memorized solos with piano accompaniment are recommended. The beginner level evaluation is 10 minutes (costs $35), and as each higher level is taken the time expands to 30 minutes for Level 10 (costs $65). The teacher selects any etude or solo repertoire as long as the level of difficulty corresponds to the works listed in the Handbook. The student performs in a private setting for an eminent, highly- recognized teacher-performer on the same instrument, receives a certificate and written comments mailed to the teacher.
