Strategic Plan and Action Plan for Sustainable Hospitality in Whangamata Mission Statement To provide a personality and lifestyle-driven unique tourist experience with a ‘pure New Zealand nature’ focus. Bushland Park offers luxury accommodation and gourmet dining to guests who enjoy the personal touch. We strive to operate as environmentally sustainably as possible to show our appreciation for the beautiful natural surroundings that house Bushland Park and strive to communicate our message to all that are involved. Our Values High-class luxury standards throughout Top-quality healthy ingredients Respect and appreciation of nature Minimizing the impact on nature Ethical and fair treatment of ourselves and others Our Vision Bushland Park is recognized as the top luxury lodge and gourmet dining service provider in the Coromandel peninsular that serves a small and selective group of high-end clients who share its values to provide them with a unique and personalised tourist experience that leaves them feeling happier and more relaxed in themselves. Bushland Park aims to preserve the natural qualities and flora and fauna of the property and is served by a thriving and biodiverse organic produce garden and food forest for relaxation and healthy nutrition. Its practices will demonstrate to visitors the value of finding lifestyle-balance and sustainable practice in living and hospitality. The profits that are made allow the owners to work happily together to maintain freedom and independence as they add value to the land and achieve the goals of Bushland Park, as well as contribute to the local community. Our Strategic Goals When our business is in the ideal state it will have achieved these key goals: 30% occupancy on average per year, largely through the increase of domestic tourist numbers. Reduce energy use further and eventually meet the demand with a fully renewable supply Being part of a close local network of sustainable practice for all procurement and processing Have access to a self-sufficient kitchen garden and food forest Reduce waste to near zero
Our Challenges and Opportunities The main challenges we need to overcome to achieve our strategic goals are: Societal perceptions that luxury is at odds with sustainable living (i.e. excesses and high energy consumption = luxury; doing without = sustainable living). Bushland Park aims to demonstrate to guests that luxurious living and service can be done sustainably The current international economic situation reduces the number of international tourists Bushland Park’s remote geographical location results in large carbon footprints for guests and the transport of procured goods Being able to source sustainable raw materials and services The big opportunities for our business in working towards our goals are: There are relatively few luxury hospitality providers that are practicing strong sustainability and so there is a potential for Bushland Park to be ‘first’ in this space in the region A chance to influence the market with the highest ecological footprint to think about sustainability whilst they have the time and mental space to truly consider it Initiatives are easy to implement as Bushland Park is owner-operated As Bushland Park’s owners may wish to retire on the property, any initiatives that reduce the running costs or increase self-reliance could reap benefits long term for them Our Tactics In working towards achieving our strategic goals, we will prioritise and focus on the following initiatives: Marketing: Increase the sustainability focus in our marketing to persuade people that the destination is worth the travel to get there, and to attract more of the rising LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) market - especially in New Zealand. Design a Bushland Park Sustainability document to have on hand in each guest room as a conversation starter to educate the guests. Featuring in sustainable business awards (and especially winning) would generate extra publicity (an increase in reputation) and bookings for Bushland Park. Energy: Investigate renewable energy options (and costs) for Bushland Park’s location, and evaluate the past years energy use to gather learning for the next year. Energy is one of the largest factors of expenditure for Bushland Park; if this can be reduced further then there will be a reduced need or necessity for guests in the long term future. Procurement: Reassess suppliers in the 2012 winter season to prepare for more sustainable procurement/use in 2013, and continue to repeat this each year. Continue to make arrangements that result in bulk buying or reductions in extra travel required to get consumables. Continual improvement will keep Bushland Park’s sustainability journey fresh for the interest of guests. Community: Attempt to involve more of the local community in our vision by talking to them about opportunities to work together. The fact that the owners have been members of the community for 18 years will help give them credibility and influence with other members. Having well established reliance relationships with other members of the community will likely help the owners when retiring on Bushland Park. Food forest: Establish a bee-friendly food forest and grow the existing kitchen garden. Petra’s enthusiasm for gardening and Jennifer’s new contacts that know about food forest design can be used to make this a fruitful venture. Yield from these plants can either go towards lowering expenditure on food for the kitchen or be sold for another income stream for Bushland Park. Reduce waste: Continue to investigate ways to reduce waste by learning more on the subject (e.g. from books, the internet, other people, etc) to stimulate more creative ideas of dealing with the issue in New Zealand. The creativity displayed may excite guests to apply no-waste thinking in their own lives also.
Measuring Success We will measure our success towards achieving our strategic goals using the following criteria and key performance indicators: Accommodation occupancy rates, expenditure and profit per month All of Bushland Park’s marketing mentions sustainability Have a Bushland Park Sustainability document on hand in each room Apply for a sustainable business award by the end of 2013 Do a cost-benefit analysis on at least three renewable energy options Re-evaluate suppliers and energy use Find at least one more community member to cooperate with (e.g. beekeeper) Have a food forest design ready and make the first preparatory arrangements Reduce kerbside rubbish by 10% in 2013 versus 2012 Our Sustainability Baseline What do Bushland Park’s business processes currently rely on? Raw materials: Guests Food and drink Kitchenware and tableware Bathroom consumables and toiletries Furniture, bedding, electronic and office equipment Building materials for maintenance and renovations Vehicles, machines and appliances Energy (e.g. petrol, gas, electricity) Services: Casual staff (e.g. occasional extra cleaning/gardening) Trades staff (e.g. plumbers, electricians, builders, massage therapists) Telecommunications (e.g. telephone, internet) Accreditation (e.g. Association representatives) Banking (e.g. Loans) What are Bushland Park’s operational activities? Fossil fuel emissions of operators transport Only one vehicle. Monitored fuel use. Fossil fuel emissions of guest transport None Fossil fuel emissions of raw materials (i.e. product and Nearly all raw materials are bought service) transport locally. Attempt to work with suppliers to limit km’s travelled (e.g. meet laundry service in town so they don’t make an extra 12km trip to the Wentworth Valley). Emissions from fossil fuels used for energy for Limiting lawn mower and BBQ use. operating machinery (e.g. the lawn mower, the BBQ) Emissions from fossil fuels used for energy for buildings Monitoring use. Turn-off policy in place (i.e. electricity from the power retailer; e.g. lighting, for lighting, freezers over winter (at the heating, etc.) wall, not standby), etc. Using energy efficiently or from varying sources. E.g. sometimes using the wood burner instead of gas, using water bottles instead of electric blankets. Replacing all used light bulbs with more energy efficient halogen or led bulbs. Switched from hot-water cylinder to on-demand water heating. Switched spa pool to slipper-foot bathtub. New renovations receive full insulation and double-glazing. Would consider swapping to a provider with more renewable energy, but options are limited due to the remote location and Genesis has been very good service during crises. Waste from IT equipment that contains heavy metals Upgrading IT equipment only when (e.g. PC, laptops, iPad and cellphones) necessary due to breakdown. Giving to e- waste recycling when possible Waste from oil based plastics (e.g. packaging) Use textile bags for all shopping trips. Reuse packaging (especially food containers) or recycling when possible. Swapped from single serve breakfast spreads to dished bulk batches. Waste from other oil based products (e.g. furniture, Choosing raw materials that are made décor, consumables) sustainably or of natural materials. Use of other metals as raw materials or components Choosing rechargeable rather than that are not completely reused or recycled (e.g. disposable batteries, not purchasing batteries, tin foil, etc) aluminium-canned beverages. Use of toxic products and chemicals for cleaning (e.g. Limiting use, use of environmentally shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, surface and friendly cleaning products, plans for glass cleaners, etc) investment in a steam-cleaning machine Waste from synthetic materials like glossy printed Reuse and recycling if possible (this paper, plastics, textiles, etc. includes separating guests rubbish for recycling), buying in bulk to reduce packaging, giving used clothing and shoes to the Op Shop and used magazines to the local Laundromat. Monitoring kerbside waste amount over time. Use of paints (e.g. the inside and outside of buildings, Limiting use. the fence) Organic waste build-up (e.g. excess food and human Composting. Septic tank system. waste) Banning pesticide use on the property.
How do Bushland Park’s operations damage What progress is currently made to natural systems? limit the effects of this? Using resources that are over-harvested (e.g. seafood Limiting the number of seafood dishes in cooking) offered, taking advice from Forest & Bird’s Best Fish guide. Using resources that are grown in a way that causes Attempting to source raw materials that damage to eco-systems (e.g. paper, palm oil and other are environmentally or sustainability ingredients in products consumed) certified, IT limiting use of paper. Using single-use disposable materials that then go to Limiting use landfill Bringing in resources (e.g. food) that create waste via Sourcing or growing own organic packaging produce, buying in bulk, reusing, recycling and avoiding waste. Transport of goods and people powered by fossil fuels Similar to above. Participation in the generates emissions that are disrupting Earth’s Kauri 2000 program (i.e. native tree climate. planting) Water use turning spring water into grey water Limiting use with the installation of low- flow restrictors in all showers, toilets and sinks. Pest-control has to be practiced to support native Banning poison use on the property. Only species survival. rat/mouse traps used for rodents and live-cage trapping and/or shotgun use for possums. Considering ‘goodnature possum trap’ acquisition. Plans under discussion for the establishment of a permaculture principled food forest with bee friendly plants.
