TRANSPORT WORKERS BUILDING POWER AT ITF 44TH CONGRESS IN SINGAPORE F or the first time in 122 years, the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) held its Congress in Southeast Asia. A record number of some 2,400 participants, representing over 600 unions from 140 countries descended in Suntec City, Singapore for the impacting 44th Congress which kicked off on 14 October 2018. The warm hospitality of the host unions – Singapore Port Workers' Union (SPWU), National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU), Port Officers' Union (POU), Singapore Maritime Officers' Union (SMOU) and Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS), wowed the ITF affiliates. SPWU was among the five unions, which made up the Singapore National Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and assisted the ITF to bring the Congress to a roaring success. The ITF’s decision-making event, gave a strong collective voice to the more than 19 million transport workers. During the Congress, watershed motions were passed and new leaders were elected to chart the course for transport workers for the next five years. The Congress hit home a strong message that transport workers are indeed building power. In his opening address as the Guest-of-Honour at the ITF Congress, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng gave the assurance that the Singapore Labour Movement would ensure that its workers are prepared for technological changes. “We want to help transform our workers into Worker 4.0 who are relevant, and can also be plugged into redesigned or new jobs that are created.” 2 SPWU Portworker

NEW COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT FOR 3 YEARS WITH PSA CORPORATION A Collective Agreement (CA) was signed between SPWU and PSA Corporation on 18 October 2018 at the PSA Auditorium. The CA with PSA Corporation, which will remain in force until September 2021, will see enhancement to salary ranges, improvements to allowances for shift work, inclusion of recognition for 5 years of long service, more assistance on family bereavement cases, adjustments to flexible benefits schemes, enhancements to medical benefits and a new Lifelong Learning Fund for members to take charge of their training. SPWU would like to thank PSA Management for their support. The CA was sealed in the presence of PSA Management – Mr Ong Kim Pong, PSA Regional CEO Southeast Asia, Mr Ng Kok Cheong, Head HR, Mr Steven Lee, VP HR, and SPWU key officials – Ms Jessie Yeo, Executive Secretary, Mr Danny Phua, President and Mr Arasu Duraisamy, General Secretary. Following the the CA signing, a simple cake-cutting ceremony took place to celebrate SPWU’s 72nd Anniversary. NEW CA WITH PSA MARINE SEALED S PWU and PSA Marine (PSAM) sealed a new CA at PSA Marine’s West Coast Base on 5 December 2018. Present from PSA Marine were Mr Er Wei Lim, Head Corporate Services, Mr Bernard Wong, Head Fleet Management, Ms Anna Fong, Senior Manager HR & Corp Comms, Mr Andrew Thang, Assistant Manager HR & Corp Comms, with SPWU key officials – Ms Jessie Yeo, Executive Secretary, Ms Khoo Woon Kung, Deputy Executive Secretary, Mr Arasu Duraisamy, General Secretary, Mr Danny Phua, President, Mr Alfred Tan, Senior IRO and Ms Stephanie Choo, IRO, as witnesses to the CA. These will remain in force until September 2021. SEVEN SPWU LEADERS GRADUATE WITH DIPLOMA IN EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS T hey did it! SPWU leaders - Kenny Ng, Ibrahim Peri, Evelyn Goh, Thangamani Sinniah, Low Chow Wah, Ken Chan and Mahfud Jurami, graduated with a Ong Teng Cheong Institute of Labour Studies (OTC-ILS) Diploma in Employment Relations (DER). SPWU flag flew high as the graduands and their family members, fellow union leaders and management partners came together to celebrate this education milestone with the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute (OTCi) during the graduation ceremony held at the Singapore University of Social Sciences’ Performing Arts Theatre, on 6 December 2018. 8 SPWU Portworker
SPWU REWARDS MEMBERS’ CHILDREN AT YOUNG SEEDLING & ACHIEVERS AWARD 2018 I t’s always heartwarming to witness union members’ children being rewarded for their hard work. That is what happened at the SPWU Young Seedling & Achievers Award 2018 presentation when 69 children of members were recognised for their outstanding academic performance and/or excellence in Fine Arts and Sports. Held at the PSA Building on 6 December 2018, SPWU joined the recipients’ parents in declaring: “You did us proud. Well done!” There to spur them on was Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee, Advisory Director, Temasek International Advisors Pte Ltd, who presented the awards amounting to $102,300. Among them, 36 students received the SPWU Young Seedling Award and 33 students received the SPWU Achievers Award. Also cheering these students on were union officials and management staff.
