TRANSPORT WORKERS BUILDING
POWER AT ITF 44TH CONGRESS IN
SINGAPORE
F or the first time in 122 years, the
   International Transport Workers
Federation (ITF) held its Congress in
Southeast Asia. A record number of
some 2,400 participants, representing
over 600 unions from 140 countries
descended in Suntec City, Singapore
for the impacting 44th Congress
which kicked off on 14 October 2018.

The warm hospitality of the host
unions – Singapore Port Workers'
Union (SPWU), National Transport
Workers’ Union (NTWU), Port
Officers' Union (POU), Singapore
Maritime Officers' Union (SMOU) and
Singapore Organisation of Seamen
(SOS), wowed the ITF affiliates.
SPWU was among the five unions,
which made up the Singapore National
Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and assisted the ITF to
bring the Congress to a roaring success.

The ITF’s decision-making event, gave a strong collective
voice to the more than 19 million transport workers. During
the Congress, watershed motions were passed and new
leaders were elected to chart the course for transport
workers for the next five years. The Congress hit home a
strong message that transport workers are indeed building
power.

In his opening address as the Guest-of-Honour at the ITF
Congress, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng gave
the assurance that the Singapore Labour Movement would
ensure that its workers are prepared for technological
changes. “We want to help transform our workers into
Worker 4.0 who are relevant, and can also be plugged into
redesigned or new jobs that are created.”
