From the AMSA 2020 President Dear Prospective Partner, Welcome and thank you for your interest in partnering with the Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA), the peak representative body for all of Australia’s 17,000 medical students. AMSA is an incredibly diverse and vibrant organisation that seeks to represent, inform and connect Australia’s medical students and future healthcare leaders. As an organisation, we have an incredible base of passionate student volunteers who run our entire organisation. AMSA’s membership base includes all 22 university medical student societies and a network reaching almost every single medical student in Australia. We hope that throughout this sponsorship prospectus, there will be opportunities for you to engage in our membership base. One of the most attractive avenues to engage our medical student membership base is through our 4 main flagship events. The largest is our National Convention, currently in its 61st year, which will be held in Melbourne in 2020. This year’s theme is ‘New Perspectives’, where we aim to expose our members to the diverse organisations that work in and around the medical sphere and to provide new perspectives to what medical careers and impact in society might look like. Our Global Health Conference, held at the Gold Coast in 2020, is a growing event which currently attracts over 800 students. It is a fantastic opportunity to engage socially conscious and globally minded medical students. Our annual National Leadership Development Seminar in Canberra is a truly empowering forum for our future health leaders, with a focus on cultivating advocacy and leadership qualities. Lastly, for sponsors who are interested in targeting the future cohort of rural training and practicing doctors, our Rural Health Summit attracts over 200 delegates. These events all provide unique opportunities to engage a national market of medical students. Alongside national events attracting students from around Australia, in 2020, we will be running several state and university engagement events, from cocktail nights to welcome first years in AMSA, to academic seminars/conferences focussing on the future of healthcare. These represent fantastic smaller bite-sized opportunities to engage in a more local market of students within a state or university. In addition, we have four core special interest groups - Global Health, Rural Health, the International Students’ Network and Medical Education; and a number of Projects that see high levels of member-engagement, including our annual blood drive Vampire Cup; our Mental Health Campaign; Gender Equity, which runs our female mentoring program; Queer Project; and AMSA Academy, providing our educational resources. These special interest groups and projects are at the heart of volunteer involvement and represent fantastic opportunities to obtain student grassroots engagement. We hope that these opportunities excite you as much as they excite us. Everything above, from national and local events, grassroots projects and regular publications can easily be tailored to your needs. We welcome discussions focussing on how your organisation can directly benefit from the extensive promotions network that reaches nearly every medical student in the country. AMSA’s volunteers produce events and programs of the highest professional standard, all while completing medical degrees. Our members represent the upcoming health professional workforce and leadership of Australia and would love to engage with you. It is only with your support that we have grown into the dynamic organisation we are today, so it is with great pleasure that I invite you to join with AMSA as a partner for 2020. Thank you once again for your interest, and we look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Daniel Zou President Australian Medical Students’ Association 2020 E: president@amsa.org.au 4
About Us The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) is the peak representative body for medical students in Australia. Each of the 22 medical schools in Australia elects a representative to sit on AMSA Council, which is the primary decision-making body of the Association. The key mandate of AMSA is to connect, inform and represent Australia’s 17,000 medical students. AMSA’s core operations are aimed at realising this mandate. These operations include: Advocacy – AMSA advocates for medical students through policy development, advocacy campaigns and representation to governments, universities and relevant medical and medico- political bodies. AMSA has a strong grass-roots approach to policy development whereby AMSA Subcommittees produce and review policy and other initiatives. Events, programs and projects – Medical students from across the country are able to connect with peers by participating in AMSA’s renowned educational, social and leadership events and programs. AMSA runs projects across several different areas including those designed to improve medical student health and wellbeing, to support disadvantaged groups and others for community participation. Global and Rural Health – Global health and rural health are important focus areas for AMSA and its members. AMSA provides specific opportunities for medical students to become actively involved in these areas while still studying, for example through AMSA’s popular AMSA Global Health special interest group (SIG). Publications – AMSA produces many publications which are distributed electronically and in physical copies. These publications are an important conduit through which AMSA connects and informs Australian medical students. 5

AMSA International Opportunities AMSA has a robust international portfolio, which it continues to expand each year. It connects AMSA members with a range of international opportunities including international exchanges, leadership roles, trainings, high level meetings such as the World Health Assembly and international policy development. These opportunities are largely facilitated interacts through with the membership status with the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). IFMSA is a not-for-profit organisation and is recognized as one of the oldest and largest student run organizations in the world. Each year, it holds two annual General Assemblies in March and August to connect and engage medical students leaders from around the world to exchange ideas and experiences, to upskill IFMSA members in leadership and key global health issues, to hold elections, and to vote on internal and external Federation policies. AMSA sends a delegation of 16 selected members to each meeting, selected based on a broad range of criteria aimed at curating a diverse, engaged and professional group of AMSA members who can effectively and positively represent Australia in an international setting, as well as bring skills and knowledge learned back to Australia for the benefit of AMSA. As a leading example of a well-established and effective medical student organisation, AMSA is a respected delegation within the IFMSA, with significant impact and expertise especially in the area of policy development. Based on post-event evaluations, students who attend IFMSA General Assemblies gain skills in leadership, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, advocacy and public speaking, all of which are invaluable attributes for the next generation of health leaders. Additionally to General Assemblies, AMSA students have the opportunity to engage in the following international opportunities: • Pre-General Assembly Training: small group in-depth training on a specific health-related topic (such as HIV/AIDS, human rights advocacy) or other skill (such as organisational leadership); • Asia Pacific Regional Meeting: the annual meeting of the IFMSA’s Asia-Pacific Region, to connect with other medical students in the region and discuss issues relevant to health in our neighbouring countries; • World Health Assembly, UN Commissions and other High Level Meetings: Teams of AMSA members commonly attend these meetings either as an AMSA delegate or within the IFMSA’s delegations to these relevent meetings. On occasion, AMSA members may work to prepare delegations in training camps in the leadup to these meetings, such as the IFMSA’s PreWHA; • International exchanges: the IFMSA offers students the opportunity to engage in international exchanges, which gives students a hands- on, immersive experience in the healthcare system of another country; 27

Vampire Cup Vampire Cup is AMSA’s annual national blood donation drive - the bloodiest and most competitive of university showdowns on the AMSA calendar. For eight weeks, each year the race to donate takes place across Aus and NZ. Teaming up with the Red Cross Blood Service, the number of whole blood, plasma and platelet donations are tallied per university to decide which few will gain glory and bragging rights for the coming year. In 2020, Vampire Cup will also host its bone marrow drive - educating and encouraging potential donors to be involved from in this other crucial Red Cross Blood Service program. Mental Health Campaign Student wellbeing and mental health is a key national priority for AMSA in 2020. The recent media spotlight on the mental health of doctors and medical students has reinforced the ongoing need to de-stigmatise, support and prevent mental illness for all our students. AMSA’s Mental Health Campaign aims to address and improve the wellbeing of Aus- tralia’s medical students through action at an individual ‘grass roots’ level as well as enacting change within Medical Schools and participating in external advocacy. The Mental Health Campaign encompasses the Academy of the Mind (a module within AMSA MedEd), Blue Week, the AMSA Mental Health website and Facebook page with over 5,000 likes, the National Mentoring Network, and the Get-A-GP Program. Other Projects AMSA Queer Project Queer identifying people face ongoing barriers to healthcare due to a lack of awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues amongst clinicians, societal stigma and structural discrimination. In light of this, the AMSA Queer project was recently conceived to educate medical students on LGBTIQ+ issues and create a supportive network for Queer medical students across Australia, including platforms through which they can be involved in educating their peers. Gender Equity At AMSA, we recognise that medicine is not immune to gender inequity, despite the 50/50 split you'll see in your university cohorts. Along the lines of the #ilooklikeasurgeon campaign, our Gender Equity project is here to break down gender stereotypes, increase the visibility of female leaders, and to tap into the wisdom and pragmatism of those women who've gone before us. Code Green AMSA recognises the scientific consensus at IPCC and among medical bodies that anthropogenic climate change poses immense threats to human health and well-being worldwide. As recognised leaders in the community, health professionals must be advocates for the prevention of climate change and its impacts on health, and work to protect their patients from its devastating consequences. Code Green is AMSA’s climate change initiative, which is locally represented at all medical schools, with 1,200 medical students following on Facebook. Sexual and Reproductive Health AMSA Sexual and Reproductive Health is an AMSA Global Health initiative concerned with a wide range of sexual and reproductive health issues, including menstrual hygiene, contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS, gynaecological and obstetric care, and sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Our mission is to be the primary platform for Australian-based medical students interested in a human-rights based approach to addressing sexual and reproductive health issues both locally and globally. 33
Other Projects Crossing Borders AMSA Crossing Borders is a national project of the AMSA Global Health Committee who aim to engage, educate and promote advocacy for the health and human rights of refugee, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants. AMSA Crossing Borders joins an international community of health professionals aiming to remove the stigma, incite conversation and improve the health of refugee and asylum seekers both within and outside our borders. Healthy Communities AMSA Healthy Communities hopes to inform, engage and inspire change across the country towards the prevention of NCDs. It aims to educate and engage Australian medical students and the wider community about the relationship between obesogenic environments and NCDs. Healthy Communities runs national initiatives such as the #MoveMindfully Campaign and Annual Park Run that encourage exercise and movement in daily lives. Activ8 Campaign Activ8 Campaign was established by the AMSA Mental Health in 2018 to complement our other initiatives, as a campaign solely focused on preventative mental health and wellbeing. In order to raise awareness around self-care and engage medical students, the campaign is constructed around eight pillars that support health and wellbeing. This year Activ8 will be run under Healthy Communities. 34
