KILKENNY CATWALK THE EVENT OF 2021 The Kilkenny Catwalk 2021 is a fantastic arts trail of 21 wonderful Kilkenny Cat sculptures which have been decorated by some of our most talented artists, mainly local, for public display in and around Kilkenny City in the second half of 2021. This arts project is a partnership project between Kilkenny Civic Trust and Kilkenny County Council which can be engaged with outdoors, whilst adhering to physical distancing requirements, regardless of restrictions. The Cat Walk art trail will be fun, bright and engaging and will bring a smile to people’s faces and support the Keep Well Campaign. People are invited to get outdoors, follow the trail and enjoy it. It has been designed to bring businesses, arts and local communities together. It provides creative work for mainly local artists, and gives local businesses the knock on benefits of visitors being attracted, once permitted, to Kilkenny to view the new creative and colourful trail. It will be also supported by a comprehensive marketing programme designed to attract significant local, regional and national coverage to the benefit of all parties involved. Bringing Business, Arts and Local Communities in Kilkenny together to support our local tourism and hospitality sector, and create an amazing public arts trail, while raising much needed funds for the Kilkenny Civic Trust and the St Marys Almshouse refurbishment project. 1
KILKENNY CIVIC TRUST Kilkenny Civic Trust is a not-for-profit charity set up in 1989 to acquire and protect Butler House & Garden a historic Georgian property which dates back to 1786. The Trust also acquired the adjacent Castle Yard, the original stable yard of Kilkenny Castle. The Castle Yard with its crescent-shaped buildings, circular windows and copper-domed tower is now home to several thriving craft and design businesses where it is possible to still watch skilled craftspeople at work. It is also home to the National Design and Craft Council of Ireland and the National Design and Craft Gallery. The Castle Yard and Butler House Garden provide a beautiful backdrop to many of Kilkenny’s festivals including the internationally recognised Kilkenny Arts Festival. In recent years, the Christmas Gardens at Butler House have become a must see attraction for all. The Trust recently broadened its remit to deepen its strategic involvement in tourism in the Trust’s own properties and also to help develop Kilkenny as a world class tourism destination. In early 2017 the Trust became the licensed operators of an award-winning visitor attraction; the ‘Medieval Mile Museum’. The Museum has already become a flagship attraction on Ireland’s Medieval Mile within Ireland’s Ancient East. The Museum, in the heart of Medieval Kilkenny, was formerly the 13th century St Mary’s Church. It is the finest example of a medieval church in Ireland. A key visitor attraction upon Ireland’s Medieval Mile it brings to life Kilkenny’s rich history as Ireland’s premier medieval city and tells “800 years of Kilkenny History under one roof”. If we all give a little, the project will have huge benefits for us all 2
THE KILKENNY CATWALK 2021 ART TRAIL WILL RAISE MONEY WHICH WILL BE REINVESTED BY THE KILKENNY CIVIC TRUST IN VITAL CONSERVATION WORK. THE ST MARY’S ALMSHOUSES REFURBISHMENT PROJECT Kilkenny City had many Almshouses to care for the poor - the oldest dating back to 1582 is the Shee Almshouse a Tudor building on Mary’s Lane. St Mary’s Almshouses were built in the early 19th century in Kilkenny City for the relief of distressed widows. The buildings are shown on an ordnance survey map circa 1839 and still retain much of their characteristic features. By preserving and restoring the St Mary’s Almshouses, Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Civic Trust seek to maintain and nurture the environment and cultural heritage of the City as part of its identity. Sensitive restoration will give a new lease of life to these historic buildings, create a valuable economic and tourism resource for Kilkenny City and a wonderful legacy for future generations to enjoy. The aim of this project is to bring the building back into use, to give it a new purpose whilst telling the story of Almshouses in Kilkenny City. A fun project with a lasting legacy 3
