Dear Theatregoer: Thank you for joining us for the 37th season of Plays by Young Writers, featuring professional productions of plays by writers ages 13 to 17. This year’s writers explore the need for introspection, finding new paths, and forging meaningful relationships. All themes that played out in real time as we produced under the looming presence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team exercised creativity in every aspect of this year’s hybrid version of the Festival. Originally hoping to present the Festival live and in- person, we adapted plans to accommodate changing health requirements. I was continually amazed and am eternally grateful to our production team and behind-the-scenes staff for their passion, flexibility, grace and kindness, as plans shifted and changed over the past several months. With the support of our gracious partners, actors performed in-person on the stages of Lamb’s Players Theatre and the Apolliad Theatre at Mesa College. Performances were filmed and edited to share with school groups and public audiences. While no audience was present during the filming, some of the playwrights were able to join us and engage in the rehearsal and staging process. The energy and connection of actors working face-to-face was refreshing and glorious after months of digital communication. The plays produced in the Festival were selected by a team of professionals from 276 submissions to our California Young Playwrights Contest. We thank the many professional theatre artists who bring their time, talents, and compassion to the play selection process. Our contest for young writers is open to any Californian under the age of 19, with a deadline of June 1, 2022. Our heartfelt gratitude to Sheila and Jeffrey Lipinsky Family Fund, Mandell Weiss Charitable Trust, and U.S. Bank Foundation for major sponsorship of the Festival. We thank all of the contributors to the Festival for sharing our belief in the power of theatre to spark creativity, promote dialogue, and deepen empathy. We hope these productions will touch your heart, spark conversation, and inspire you to turn your stories into plays. Sincerely, Cecelia Kouma Executive Producer
