Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Delivering a Greener Greater Manchester Greater Manchester Natural Capital Group Annual Conference Speaking today Anne Selby Anne Selby is CEO of the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and CEO, The Wildlife Trust Merseyside. As a competent and enthusiastic networker and for Lancashire, representative of the Wildlife Trusts, she has held various government Manchester and North appointments, including Board Member for the NW Development Agency, Lancashire Heritage Lottery Fund Regional Committee and the NW Forestry and Wildlife Advisory Committee. In Greater Manchester, Anne chairs the Natural Capital Group (Local Nature Partnership) which champions environmental matters and reports into the Combined Authority via the Green City Region Partnership. Chris Matthews Chris Matthews’ prime focus is to help United Utilities deliver its objectives Vice Chair, GM Natural in a sustainable way. His role includes shaping how the company reports its Capital Group and Head responsible business commitments and developing relationships with key of Sustainability, United stakeholders to further the company’s goals. He works with several groups Utilities to encourage responsible business behaviour and to explore opportunities for collaborative working. He is Vice Chair of the Natural Capital Group and a member of the North West Business Leadership Team’s Essential Resources Taskforce. Nationally, he is a member of Business in the Community’s Environment Leadership Team and Water Taskforce. Tony Juniper Tony Juniper, CBE is Chair of Natural England. Before taking up this role in Chair, Natural England April 2019, he was the Executive Director for Advocacy and Campaigns at WWF-UK, a Fellow with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and President of the Wildlife Trusts. Until January 2018 he was an independent sustainability and environment advisor, including as Special Advisor with The Prince of Wales' International Sustainability Unit. Tony speaks and writes widely on conservation and sustainability themes and is the author of many books, including the multi- award-winning bestseller ‘What Has Nature Ever Done For Us?’ published in 2013. Tony began his career as an ornithologist, working with Birdlife International. From 1990 he worked at Friends of the Earth, initially leading the tropical rainforests campaign, and from 2003–2008 was the organisation's Executive Director. From 2000–2008 he was Vice Chair of Friends of the Earth International.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Cllr Andrew Western A lifelong Trafford resident, Councillor Andrew Western is the Leader of Leader Trafford Council Trafford Council and has been a local councillor representing Sale Town and Green City Region Centre since 2011. Andrew’s professional background is in project Lead management, predominantly in civil engineering, specialising in supporting delivery of large-scale infrastructure programmes. He has also worked on IT transformation projects including at Manchester Airport Group. In addition to his work as Leader of Trafford Council and on Green City Region, Andrew sits on the North West Regional Leaders’ Board, serves on the Board of a local mental health charity and is the Vice President of a Trafford-based youth association. Andrew is also a non-executive director of Trafford Housing Trust and is a member of the LGA Improvement and Innovation Board. Professor Dieter Helm Professor Dieter Helm is an Official Fellow in Economics at New College, Chair, Natural Capital Oxford and Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Oxford. He is Committee Chair of the Natural Capital Committee. Dieter recently completed the Helm Review on The Cost of Energy for the British Government. Dieter’s books include: The Carbon Crunch - Revised and Updated Edition (2015), Natural Capital - Valuing The Planet (2015), and Burn Out: the Endgame for Fossil Fuels (2018), all published by Yale University Press. His book Green and Prosperous Land was published in 2019 by William Collins. Andrea Ledward is the Natural Environment Director at Defra with Andrea Ledward responsibility for delivery of the 25 Year Environment Plan and the Natural Environment Environment Bill. She has 18 years’ experience in the civil service, including Director, Defra eight years at DFID where she led the aid programme in Ethiopia, climate policy and represented the UK on the Green Climate Fund UK Board, and eight years in Dept for Communities and Local Government focussed on communities and social exclusion. She is a trained anthropologist who spent many years in remote parts of Africa learning about livelihoods and health issues, and studied at Oxford, Harvard and UCL. Adam Booth Adam Booth is the Urban Pioneer Programme Manager for the Urban Pioneer Project Environment Agency. A three-year, co-designed and collaboratively Manager, Environment delivered programme across a wide partnership. Set within Greater Agency Manchester, it has developed and implemented solutions to achieve the aspirations within the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan for national implementation. He is also the Lead for the Environment Agency’s Water, Land and Biodiversity Business Group.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Faith Bulleyment Faith Bulleyment has been working with charities and organisations across Business Director, the public sector for 18 years, helping them to reach new people, influence Creative Concern behaviours and thinking, and to realise their potential through great marketing and communications. Starting her career at Red Rose Forest (now City of Trees), Faith found a passion for communicating on environmental and social issues. Faith moved to issues-based communications agency Creative Concern in 2005, and since then has worked with a wide spectrum of organisations, from those committed to transforming our environment (the Forestry Commission, the Woodland Trust, Roundtable on Responsible Soy) to charities making a huge impact across a range of social issues - homelessness, health, education, to name just a few. Krista Patrick Krista Patrick has more than 20-years’ experience of working as an Natural Capital environmental planner in the public, private and community sectors, and Coordinator, GMCA joined the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as Natural Capital Coordinator in 2016. In this role, Krista provides strategic support on delivering a natural capital approach as part of the Natural Course EU LIFE Integrated Project, Greater Manchester Urban Pioneer Project and the Greater Manchester Natural Capital Group. Sarah Lindley Professor Sarah Lindley is Professor of Geography at the University of Professor of Geography, Manchester. She researches the influence of the urban environment on University of human health and wellbeing. Her research is collaborative and multi- Manchester disciplinary with a strong emphasis on geographical information science. Her specialisms include air pollution, environmental risk, urban climate, climate adaptation and the regulating ecosystem functions of urban green infrastructure. Although frequently working with partners in Greater Manchester, her wider research covers Europe, Africa and Asia. She has worked as a UK government expert, and was a lead author for the Inter- governmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Dr Konstantinos Dr Konstantinos Tzoulas is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Tzoulas Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research interests Senior Lecturer, include urban ecology, sustainable development, green infrastructure Manchester planning, and public health. Konstantinos’ current research evaluates the Metropolitan University social and economic benefits of peri-urban sphagnum farming. Recently he worked on evaluating the wellbeing benefits of urban parks for people with early stage dementia. He has also worked on co-developing a public action plan for enhancing the ecological and wellbeing benefits of public gardens.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Professor Penny Cook Professor Penny Cook is Professor of Public Health and leads a research Professor of Public group, Equity, Health and Wellbeing, at the University of Salford. Her Health, University of research focusses on working with communities to improve health using Salford an asset-based community development model. She is also interested in health behaviour and carries out research in sedentary behaviour, physical activity and the health benefits of greenspace. Current and recent research includes investigating the overlap of health and environmental indicators, identifying health benefits of urban parks, quantifying access to country parks, and evaluating the socioeconomic, psychosocial, and environmental factors that promote sedentary behaviour. Follow her on Twitter @profpennycook. Anna da Silva Anna da Silva has worked across the media, international development, Project Director, and the environment sector for the BBC, the UN and the RHS. She lived and Northern Roots worked in Africa and the Middle East for several years before shifting her focus to domestic projects. She specialises in developing new projects that change lives and places. Anna relocated to the North West in 2011 as part of the leadership team that moved the BBC to Salford. From 2016- 2019 she lead the team creating the RHS’ new Bridgewater Garden in Salford. She took on the leadership of Northern Roots in 2019. Richard Green Richard Green is the Head of RHS Garden Bridgewater. With a background Head of Site, RHS in leadership and the day-to-day running of large attractions and Bridgewater museums, he previously worked as Director of Operations at Chill Factore and, prior to that, in a variety of leadership roles at the Science Museum Group, where he worked for more than 10 years. The creation of RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford is one of the most significant events in the Society’s 215-year history. When it opens this summer, the garden will bring world-class horticulture within an hour’s journey of 8.2 million people in the region. Jenny Griggs Jenny Griggs has been a community engagement co-ordinator since Carbon Landscapes starting at Lancashire Wildlife Trust in 2001. She has a specialist interest in Community organic farming, having written a text book on the subject which is sold Engagement Officer, internationally, and has run a smallholding/mental health recovery project Lancashire Wildlife since 2003. She has worked part-time on the Carbon Landscape since Trust 2017 and has taken the lead on working with 64 groups developing over 30 different projects. Many of these projects involve engagement with young people.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Bryan Cosgrove Bryan Cosgrove brings more than 15 years’ experience in the environmental Resilience Coordinator, sector. Having qualified with a bachelor’s degree in conservation City of Trees management, Bryan went on to manage habitat protection projects in the Scottish Highlands. Returning to Manchester, he began working as an Environmental Protection Officer for the Environment Agency. He returned to The University of Manchester to complete a Master’s degree in environmental modelling before moving into local authority to help develop Manchester’s sustainability and climate change strategies. At City of Trees his current focus is on modelling provision and the need for ecosystem services in the urban environment, and development of green infrastructure plans. Dr Amanda Wright Dr Amanda Wright focusses on landscape scale initiatives, biodiversity and Senior Advisor in the protected sites. She currently leads the development and implementation Cheshire to Lancashire of district level licencing for great crested newts across this area, alongside Area Team at Natural leading on landscape-scale programmes and projects such as Great England Manchester Wetlands. She is the lead for the Defra Peat Pilot across Greater Manchester. She is also the lead for nature recovery across the area, developing a wetland nature recovery network model with partners, and is now working with partners to develop this further through Natural Course. Alongside this, she chairs the Carbon Landscape Partnership and the delivery of a wetland network for wildlife and people. Tom Smart Tom Smart completed a Master’s degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Advisor – Urban and at the University of Leeds, where he developed research interests both in Wetlands Team spatial modelling and GI techniques, and public engagement and Cheshire, Greater education. He conducted independent research on zoo visitor education at Manchester, Merseyside Chester Zoo, where he currently works in the Education Department. Tom and Lancashire Area has brought these skills to Natural England where he is currently leading on Team, Natural England the Greater Manchester Peat Pilot evidence gathering, and on wetland network modelling within Natural Course alongside City of Trees. Sion Platts-Kilburn Sion Platts-Kilburn joined United Utilities in 2015 and has worked in Strategy Development strategic roles for nearly three years. This has included working as Manager (Natural Customer Strategy Development Manager, supporting in the development Course), United Utilities of the company’s 2020-2025 business plan, but more recently in 2019 joined the Natural Course project collaborative team as the United Utilities representative. Craig Higson Craig Higson is the Environment Agency lead on the Natural Course Natural Course project, an EU partnership project to improve the water environment in the Collaborative Officer, North West. His background is in nature conservation. His first role with the Environment Agency Environment Agency was as a Biodiversity Officer, providing advice to internal and external stakeholders on nature conservation matters. Since then he has had a range of roles including leading teams in flood risk and environment planning, and as a programme manager.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Dave Bell Dave Bell is Natural England’s Partnership and Innovation Manager for the Partnership and Cheshire to Lancashire Area Team. He leads the Area Team’s work on Innovation Manager for Sustainable Development and Connecting People with Nature. A lot of his the Cheshire to time is spent in Greater Manchester embedding nature recovery and Lancashire Area Team, Natural Capital into policies and strategies as part of the Urban Pioneer Natural England and Natural Capital Group. He is focussed on increasing the role nature plays in decision making across all sectors and developing new partnerships, strategies and tools to deliver thriving nature for people and the planet. Petula Neilson Petula Neilson is the Urban, Wetlands and Water Team Leader in the Team Leader – Urban Natural England, Cheshire to Lancashire Area team. Her work is diverse, and Wetlands managing a multidisciplinary team covering sustainable development, Cheshire, Greater landscape scale initiatives including projects such as Great Manchester Manchester, Merseyside Wetlands, Carbon Landscape and the Defra Peat Pilot for Greater and Lancashire Area Manchester, protected sites, biodiversity and catchment-sensitive Team, farming. She is also Lead for Natural England in the Natural Course LIFE IP Natural England project, working with her team developing a nature recovery network model for Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Martin Moss Martin Moss is a Green Infrastructure Senior Advisor for Natural England Green Infrastructure working within the Connecting People with Nature team, working on the Senior Advisor for National Green Infrastructure Standards Project and related work on Urban Natural England Nature Recovery, and the links between environment and deprivation. Martin has worked for Natural England and its predecessor bodies since 1994 when he joined the Countryside Commission in the Yorkshire Region, working on a wide range of programmes including the original Country Stewardship Scheme, Rights of Way, National Trails, Heritage Coasts, Countryside Character and the Land Management Initiatives, Rural Transport, Rural Housing and Market Towns. Derek Richardson Derek Richardson is the Principal Ecologist at the Greater Manchester Principal Ecologist at Ecology Unit (GMEU). GMEU provides specialist ecological advice to and on the Greater Manchester behalf of local planning authorities across North West England. He has Ecology Unit been involved in work to develop Ecological Networks and Nature Improvement Areas for more than 20 years. Recently he has been helping to develop a coherent Ecological and Green Infrastructure Network for Greater Manchester as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, an emerging strategic plan which will drive sustainable development in the North West for the next 25 years. He is also involved in work to achieve a net gain in biodiversity across all future developments in Greater Manchester.
Join the conversation #GMGreenCity Sam Evans Sam Evans is Head of Natural Environment at GMCA, leading the Head of Natural Combined Authority’s work to improve the city region’s environment Environment, Greater through developing strategy and policy, delivering key projects and working Manchester Combined with a range of partners. Sam joined GMCA in October 2018, leading the Authority development of the Mayor’s Five-Year Environment Plan, launched at the Green Summit in March. He is on secondment from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, where most recently he was Head of Strategic Coordination. Before that, Sam held various roles in the civil service, including working on local growth and devolution policy with the Liverpool City Region and designing and implementing the government’s policy on tackling bovine TB. Matt Ellis Seconded into the GMCA from the Environment Agency, Matt Ellis has Climate Resilience been utilising his experience around strategic spatial planning issues to Officer, GMCA understand and increase GM’s resilience to a rapidly changing climate. Of particular interest to Matt is the role of the natural environment in providing vital climate (ecosystem) services. Matt delivered GM’s component of the www.resin-cities.eu project, sits on the Natural Capital Group, chairs the Core Cities climate resilience and adaptation working group, and sits on Defra’s Local Adaptation Advisory Panel. Amanda Skeldon Amanda Skeldon heads up Business in the Community’s (BITC) Water Campaign Manager Resilient Cities work. She has managed development and delivery of the Stakeholder and Water Resilient Cities, SuDS programme in Greater Manchester since its Communications inception in 2016. Prior to this role Amanda was Regional Head of Technical Lead – Communications at BITC and has led a range of communications and The IGNITION Project: stakeholder engagement campaigns on a range of responsible business Greater Manchester issues. She has worked in communications and campaign management within the not-for-profit sector for more than 20 years in organisations including the Royal National College for the Blind, Comic Relief and Womankind Worldwide as well as establishing a Corporate Social Responsibility consultancy function within Fast Track (now Chime), a global sports marketing and events agency. Jamie Mansfield Jamie Mansfield co-founded Environmental Finance in 2016, where he Co-Founder and advises on structuring and implementing innovative investment models for Director, Environmental the natural and built environment. He has led EF’s advisory work on Finance developing the Natural Capital Investment Plan for Greater Manchester, Defra’s Natural Environment Investment Fund and RSPB’s Conservation Investment programme. He also co-designed and manages a £50 million- impact investment fund that enables community ownership of solar farms. Jamie has extensive experience across M&A, project financing and debt underwriting of renewable energy and natural asset projects, and has structured more than £150m of long-term investments with institutional investors.

With a BA Hons in Youth and Community Work, an MSC in The Wildlife Trust for Environmental Management, and more than 20 years professional Lancashire, Manchester experience working across the third sector engaging people with their & North Merseyside environment, Rhoda is passionate about the impact of connection to nature. Now in its fifth year Myplace is LWT’s innovative eco-therapy programme, offering an NHS-supported referral pathway that delivers small person-centred groups, connecting people to nature for their own wellbeing and recovery, while also supporting nature’s recovery. Sophie Glinka Sophie Glinka is Chief Officer of The Bureau, a community wellbeing Social Prescribing Lead charity, which is an established provider of a VCSE-led social prescribing – Person and scheme. She is also Social Prescribing Lead in the Person Centred and Community Centred Community Approaches team within the Greater Manchester Health and Approaches Social Care Partnership. More recently she has taken the role of Regional Greater Manchester Learning Coordinator for Social Prescribing Link Workers for NHSE. She has Health & Social Care a passion for social prescribing and community wellbeing and is dedicated Partnership to scaling and developing social prescribing. Dr Michelle Howarth Dr Michelle Howarth has a specialist interest in social prescribing and the Senior Lecturer in use of nature-based, person-centred approaches to promote health and Nursing at the wellbeing. Michelle is passionate about promoting personalised care to University of Salford support people with long-term conditions and leads the National Social and Deputy Director for Prescribing Network Special Interest Group for Nursing through which she PGR is actively campaigning to raise awareness of social prescribing among nurses through research, curriculum development and placement opportunities.
