2021 NATIONAL HELLENIC SOCIETY HERITAGE WEEKEND & CLASSIC PANELISTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH KEYNOTE SPEAKER DR. KATHERINE FLEMING is the Provost of New York University (NYU) and member of NYU’s faculty as the Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization. She served as Director of the Remarque Institute and as an associate member of the History Department of the École Normale Supérieure, Paris, and President of the Board of the University of Piraeus. She is a specialist on modern Greece, the Balkans and Mediterranean region and her recent book, Greece: A Jewish History has been critically acclaimed and awarded the National Jewish Book and Runciman Awards. She holds a doctorate in history from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. (Chicago) and B.A. (Barnard/Columbia) in comparative religion. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8TH 2021 PANEL GEORGE KALLIS is the composer of the score of the epic film, Cliffs of Freedom. His recent work is scoring the film, After We Fell soon to be released in theaters. George’s scoring credits include The Last Warrior: Root of Evil for Disney, Lev Yashin: The Dreamkeeper, Albion The Enchanted Stallion staring John Cleese, 93 Days starring Danny Glover. George has worked extensively for TV and commercial work credits and is the recipient of the prestigious Jerry Goldsmith Award and the International Film Music Critics Award. George was born in Cyprus and represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest. He studied film composition at Berklee College of Music and received his Master’s in Music composition at The Royal College of Music. VAN LING is a writer/director/producer and freelance visual effects supervisor, designer, editor, and artist whose film and television credits include The Abyss, Terminator 2, Twister, Starship Troopers, Doctor Dolittle, The Walking Dead, Titanic and THX trailers seen in theaters worldwide. Van animated graphic creations and effects for Walt Disney Imagineering, for theme park attractions such as Star Tours, Test Track and Disney Cruise Line’s Skyline Lounge. Van has produced a host of seminal DVDs and Blu-ray discs, creating in-depth special features (on titles ranging from Field of Dreams to Titanic) and often pioneering innovative menu systems with Easter Eggs for fans, including those for The Abyss Special Edition, Independence Day, the Hunger Games films, various incarnations of Terminator 2 and all the Star Wars films on DVD. Cliffs of Freedom marks Van’s screenplay and directorial debut. DR. MAUREEN SANTELLI serves as Associate Professor of American History and Western Civilization at the Northern Virginia Community College. Dr. Santelli's research in America's fascination with Greece's Revolutionary War is the subject of an exceptional book: The Greek Fire American-Ottoman Relations and Democratic Fervor in the Age of Revolutions. Dr. Santelli posits what began as a sentimental fascination with Greece's efforts to cast off Ottoman subjugation developed into a school of thought that facilitated the abolitionist movement in America and provided women with a platform to advocate for their education and assertion of equal rights. She received her B.A. in Classics from the University of Montana, and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in American History from George Mason University
2021 NATIONAL HELLENIC SOCIETY HERITAGE WEEKEND & CLASSIC PANELISTS DR. TOM PAPADEMETRIOU is the Constantine and Georgiean Georgiou Endowed Professor of Greek History, Director of the Dean C. and Zoë S. Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton University. Tom’s extensive research culminated in the critically acclaimed book, Render Unto the Sultan, published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Papademetriou has been awarded multiple research fellowships including from the Social Science Research Council, Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Research Center-Harvard University and was appointed the Whitehead Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Dr. Papademetriou serves as the President of the Modern Greek Studies Association, an academic organization dedicated to the promotion of Modern Greek Studies. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH KEYNOTE SPEAKER JOHN MCKESSON CAMP II is Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of Classics at Randolph-Macon College. He holds an A.B. in Classics from Harvard University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from Princeton University. Dr. Camp is regarded as the foremost expert on the topography of Athens and Attica. His long association with the American School's Athenian Agora excavations dates to 1966 when he joined the staff as an excavator. He continued as Agora Fellow in 1972, then as Assistant Director from 1973, and has served as Director since 1994. He was also the School's Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Classical Studies from 1985 to 1996. Dr. Camp has published and lectured widely, and has received many awards and honors for his work, including the Aristeia Award for Distinguished Alumni/ae of the American School. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH GREECE: REVIVAL & OUTLOOK WILLIAM ANTHOLIS serves as Director and CEO of the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. Bill is Emeritus Managing Director at The Brookings Institution where he helped manage the full range of policy studies, developed new initiatives, coordinated research across programs and strengthened the policy impact of Brookings’ research. Bill is the author of, Inside Out India and China: Local Politics Go Global which explores the role and impact of India & China’s provinces on the global stage. He has published extensively on domestic and foreign policy issues, international organizations, climate change, and trade. Bill served at the White House as Director of International Economic Affairs, and on the National Security Council and National Economic Council staff. He was Deputy Director of the White House Climate Change Policy Team. He served at the State Department, on the Policy Planning Staff and Economic Affairs Bureau staff and was a Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund. AMBASSADOR ALEXANDRA PAPADOPOULOU is the first female Ambassador of Greece to the US and was also the first woman to serve as Greece’s Permanent Representative to the European Union. She has a distinguished diplomatic career and served as Head of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Prime Minister, Director General for European Affairs/in charge of the Greek Presidency of the EU in 2014, Head of the Greek Liaison Office in Skopje and Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations. Ambassador Papadopoulou served as the leader of the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo. Ambassador Papadopoulou holds a Law Degree from the University of Athens and as a Fulbright Scholar earned her Master’s Degree in International Relations/International Law from the University of Pennsylvania.
2021 NATIONAL HELLENIC SOCIETY HERITAGE WEEKEND & CLASSIC PANELISTS JOHN SITILIDES is a Principal of Trilogy Advisors in Washington specializing in U.S. government relations, geopolitical risk, and international affairs. John is a consultant to a wide range of clients providing geopolitical risk reports, webcasts, and related services to institutional capital market and retail clients. His insight and analysis is sought out by corporate executives, investment managers and others. He serves as the Southern Europe Regional Coordinator at the Foreign Service Institute, the State Department's professional development and diplomacy academy for American foreign policy professionals and was Board Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center Southeast Europe Project following several years as Executive Director of the Western Policy Center, an international relations institute specializing in regional U.S., NATO, and EU interests in southeastern Europe. He has testified before Congress and is a frequent national security commentator on U.S. and international media on Bloomberg News, CNN, FOX News, and CNN International. He has been widely interviewed and cited in major media platforms. John worked as a communications and legislative aide for a U.S. Senate leader and holds a Master’s Degree in International and Public Affairs from Columbia University. CONGRESSWOMAN DINA TITUS grew up in Georgia, has lived in Las Vegas for over 40 years, and proudly represents Nevada’s First District in the United States House of Representatives. Dina received her PhD from Florida State University in 1977 and taught American government courses at UNLV from 1977-2000. She was Minority Leader of the Nevada State Senate from 1991 to 2008 when she was first elected to Congress. Dina serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Subcommittee on Europe, Energy and the Environment, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Homeland Security Committee. She is a member of the Hellenic Caucus and has stood in strong support of efforts to protect the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul and reunify Cyprus. She is also a founding member of the Greek-Israeli Caucus.
