GA South Hall County Ladies Homestead Gathering South Hall August Recap 2018 National Ladies Homestead Gathering Fri, Aug 3, 2018 at 6:13 PM Reply-To: SouthHallGA Administrator To: GA South Hall NLHG Admin Hello Ladies, This month's Gathering topic was how to make your own cleaners. It was so easy and fun. Willa Beth, Debbie and Julia each showed us a different cleaning product and we had the opportunity to make and take each cleaning item home with us. Willa Beth has been making her own cleaning products for 6 years now. She has saved money and kept trash out of the landfill. She started on her DIY cleaning product journey via the book Salt, Lemons, Vinegar, and Baking Soda by Shea Zukowski. There is a variety of cleaning products that can be made at home using very simple ingredients. These cleaning products include glass cleaner, shower cleaner, microfiber cleaner, granite cleaner (1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 part water, and a drop of Dawn), cast iron skillet cleaner (salt and olive oil), dirty pan soak (peroxide and baking soda) and many, many, many more! Willa Beth plans to make toilet bombs using borax and other ingredients. We also learned that white vinegar odor can be improved by adding citrus peels to the vinegar and le ng sit, covered, for at least 10 days. Debbie made laundry detergent using 1 cup washing soda, 1 bar Dr. Bronner’s bar soap (grated), and 1 cup borax. This recipe is very inexpensive and takes only 1 Tablespoon per load. Julia made remineralizing tooth powder which filled the room with a strong peppermint smell. The tooth powder contained baking soda, bentonite clay, calcium carbonate (limestone powder), Himalayan salt, and essen al oils of clove, myrrh, peppermint, and an an bacterial blend. Everyone at the mee ng went home with all‐purpose surface cleaner, laundry detergent, and tooth powder. Women's Health Factoid: As I drove home last night a er our Gathering, I was thinking why is it a er every Gathering I feel so pumped up regardless of the topic or of how I felt before the Gathering. Following every Gathering, I come home on cloud nine. So, I did a li le research. There are mul ple studies out there that show women benefit health wise from actual contact with friends and specifically other women. Here was a li le snippet I pulled from an ar cle "... women, on the other hand, are gene cally hard‐wired for friendship in large part due to the Oxytocin released into their bloodstream, combined with the female reproduc ve hormones. When life becomes challenging, women seek out friendships with other women as a means of regula ng stress levels. A common female stress response is to “tend and befriend.” That is, when women become stressed, their inclina on is to nurture those around them and reach out to others." So, if at the end of a long day you are deba ng whether you want to at a end one of our Gatherings, come for the free shot of Oxytocin. LOL!!! Karen's Garden Minute All the rain has slowed down the matura on of summer gardens. Karen is using this unusual summer harvest lull to reassess what she planted this year, what worked, and what did not. Karen is recording her garden’s progress on a gardening calendar for reference next year. Atta Girls Jill W has figs and elderberries coming in despite having a rough year with these plants last year. Karen is having success with her mason bee houses. Amanda got two chickens!
