Letter from our Team Rector One of the big plusses about coming out of lockdown is that we can meet up again! Fantastic. But what if you have restricted mobility or are housebound? Not really much change, save for more visitors. This is where the benefice wide (meaning all eight of our parishes) Prayer Sheet steps in. This initiative simply invites those who are tied to the indoors to take part in the prayer life of the church; to pray for our communities, our schools, church life both general and particular, plus prayers for ourselves. It will be delivered either online or a paper copy and will be written each month by Lay Minister Annie, Rev’d Andrew or myself. I pioneered this idea when I was at Vicar School and on placement in a sprawling post-war housing estate in Sunderland. I then took it to my first two posts after ordination, both in rural areas. In one village, it was credited with reinvigorating the church – which was very humbling. Prayer works then. What we need is to know who would like to take part and also, who would be willing to distribute two of three paper prayer sheets each month. With safeguarding in mind, distributors would need a DBS which we would organise. And for clarity, anybody can have the prayer sheet if they wish. On a related note, if you or someone you know would like to chat to Annie, Rev’d Andrew or myself, please get in touch. Our contact details are in the magazines. Both Andrew and myself are new here and with lockdown, have been unable to be visible as we would have liked. With every blessing, Rev’d Howard Robson.
Parish Council News The meeting of Soulbury Parish Council was held on Monday, 17 May 2021 at 7.30 p.m in the Parish Hall. There were 4 members of the public present. No apologies received. It was announced that Wendy Taylor is now assistant to the Parish Clerk and as such will be covering the admin of the Council. Minutes of the meeting held on 15th March 2021 were approved. Matters arising: It has since been determined that the unsafe tree is located in Ivy Lane and not Bragenham Lane as first advised. Cllr Stevens established that the work required is substantial and would require road closures. As there are overhead cables involved as well it was felt it was not a parish council job. Cllr Stevens has since raised a ticket on Fix my Street - number 40164149. Following the recent elections all previous councillors remain on the Council and Cllr Wright was unanimously re-elected as Chairman and Cllr Cross re-elected as Vice-Chairman. Various bills were paid. Planning: 21/01968: Land at Stockgrove - erection of steel framed barn (6 x 3.5m) for forestry purposes. No objection. 21/01384: Sandy Hill farm, Leighton Road, Soulbury - application for Lawful Development Certificate for an existing use; erection of a building for use as a dwellinghouse for a continuous period of 4+ years. This application is another in the trend of converting barns without planning permission and then obtaining it retrospectively. The Parish Council has deep concern about this trend and therefore objects to this application. 21/01587: Land to the west of Soulbury Road, Soulbury - new gated access and agricultural access track (retrospective). Highways has made some stipulations; setting the gates back 11 metres, improving visibiltity. Providing the changes are made the Parish Council has no objection. 21/01545: The Boot PH, 51 High Road, Soulbury - variation of condition 11 for changes that will relate to the reconfiguration of the public house car park, change of surface to stone chippings, fencing to larch lap. Cllr Wright is concerned about traffic movements and the pavement so will contact Highways. 21/00467: Manor Farm House, Leighton Road, Soulbury - retention of rooflights and clock tower (retrospective). No objection as long as it does not encourage residential use of the building. Childrens’ Playground: The lease has now been signed by Cllr Wright and has been returned to Buckinghamshire Council. We can now start looking for funding for more play equipment. However, it was agreed that s106 monies will be used. Frances Meichtry has received a quote from Kompan for £42,551.98 inc VAT. This includes a cableway, spire net, freestanding mini goal x 2, basket ball goal, pine picnic table, monkey bars plus associated ground works and surfaces. Those present gave a huge vote of thanks to Mrs Meichtry for all her effort and persistence with this project. Bigger bin in the playground is required as rubbish is overflowing from the one we have. WT was asked to put an article in the parish news about what is happening to this area so is aware of the work going on to the benefit of the parish. Grass Cutting: Very good. Looks the best it ever has. County Councillors: No County Councillors were present. A request was made that we do need to meet the new councillors. WT offered to contact Cllr Phil Gomm who is one of the newly elected team for the Gt Brickhill ward.
Parish Hall: A Smart meter will be obtained for the hall. We need to have a water meter so Ian Woolhead will obtain a price to installing one. In the meanwhile what meters we have will be read. SMG: The crew room now has water and power so there is now no need to use the parish hall for refreshments for the Community Payback teams. The SMG is looking really good and the area around the pond is ready for planting up. Richard Caplan has done an excellent job. We do, now, need to fundraise for SMG. SMG is the sole beneficiary of this year’s Soulfest (10 July), however Cllr Stevens said we now need to put on some events, such as a sale of goods, to bolster funds. Cllr Stevens asked for ideas. Public Participation: Work to continue for getting the fountain into SPC ownership (a possessory title). As this has been going on for some time Cllr Wright felt that we should start over again. There will be traffic lights outside the Boot field deveopment (now called Poppy Lane) for Anglian Water works for 2 weeks. There will be 3 LED street lights in Poppy Lane. We will only be responsible if the road is adopted. There has been no further information on the standard of the build of Poppy Lane residences but the detached houses have been sold as has one of the terraced houses. Dean Farm Lane condition: Cllr Day has walked the route. The bridle path is in the middle. The problems are as the edges of the lane. There are huge gullies created by the farm equipment using the lane. The work to remedy is enormous and was felt to be out of the remit of the parish council. AOB: Cllr Stevens asked that the next edition of the Parish News be printed with a questionnaire inserted so we can obtain people’s opinions on the future of the publication in terms of its presentation. It was agreed that the Parish Council will pay for the print run. If the general consensus is to continue with printing WT will start charging for advertising again. It was also agreed that there will not be a charge for the parish magazine to readers. Speed Indicating Device outside 5 Leighton Road the pole has been refurbed by Cllr Cross. Cllr Day and Wright will relocate in Stewkley Road this week. WT suggested that the annual meeting should include reports from the groups in the parish such as the cricket club, the Parochial Church Council, WI,etc to promote inclusivity of all. It was agreed to look into to this for next year’s annual meeting.141 by Chelmscote Cottages to gain access to the canal. There is a caravan and houseboat. A gate has been erected. They will need permission from Highways to get across their land. Cllr Stevens knows the person who sold the land, will get the details so the matter can be further addressed. The Parish Council meeting will take place on 21st June 2021 at 7:30 pm in the parish hall.
Marquee for hire Have you considered using the Soulbury Millennium Green for events and functions? There are many facilities on the SMG to make your event a success which includes a 12m x 6m white marquee. To hire this marquee the cost is £150 per event. So please consider the SMG for parties, children parties, birthdays, barbecues, wedding blessings, etc. Contact Alan Stevens or Wendy Taylor to discuss. For the hire of marquees for functions at other locations, please call Alan Stevens to discuss the cost and logistics. Ever hopeful that we will be able to socialise again, this facility can be considered for any future planning. Advertising Rates To advertise in this magazine the rates are as follows: Full page (portrait) £200 £30 Half page (landscape) £100 £20 Quarter page (portrait) £50 £10 Small ads (landscape) £33 £5 Advertisements will appear in b/w in the booklet format, full colour in the ePub format and on the new parish website. Please note: copy date is 21st of each month. Due to the inprecedented situation we find ourselves in I will extend the advertising period for all advertising by the number of months lockdown continues. The advertising essentially pays for printing the hard copy and as I will not be printing for the forseeable future I cannot bring it upon myself to charge you all until I start the printed version again. Amazon Fresh Amazon has announced they will deliver food when ordered on-line. You need an Amazon prime account. They are delivering to Soulbury. Go to your normal Amazon home screen, locate SmileAmazon, and click the Amazon Fresh button.

The pond is in great shape as we now have firm edges and defined outline of the pond, planting has started and by the summer it should be well established. All the footpaths have benefitted from a good layer of wood chippings and are much more accessible now. We have built a shelter which will enable our community payback lads access to some shelter and facilities for a brew. In fact, it was they who built it. Grass mowing is now in full swing and repairs are being carried out on the play areas. Let us not forget that, subject to Covid, we shall be holding Soulfest on the 10th July this year and will be charging a £5 admission fee, except for children under 12 who will be admitted free.

Due to the building of houses, developers have to pay s106 monies to the communities in which they are built. Soulbury has been no exception and we have a ‘bank’ of s106 monies to spend. It has to be spent on projects which improve the amenities within the parish. To this end the Parish Council has been asking for ideas. Parents in the village asked that we upgrade the play equipment. They, under the leadership of Frances Meichtry, were authorised to get quotes for what they wanted. This has taken some time and a lot of hard work for Frances and her team not least of which was to strike a balance to get equipment that covered as wide an age range as they could in the space. Final plan has been approved so watch this space - it will be upgraded this summer. If you have any ideas for the use of such funds, please contact the Parish Council.
Guess Who? Did you guess the name of last week’s victim? Perhaps you may like to try again as this villager has lived in Soulbury for almost 40 years. Their first real job was as a cabinet maker but on retirement was a motor mechanic. In between times they became the youngest Sub-postmaster in the country, a position held for 19 years. One favourite piece of music is Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Biographies are favourite reading material. A place to visit would be Dubai to see the islands, not to shop! They would miss the community spirit if they had to leave Soulbury but maybe articles like this would help villagers get to know one another better. A bank manager gave this person their best advice – “Get into debt and stay there, using other people’s money.” As for advice to the younger generation that would be to respect their elders, work hard and stick at it. In answer to ‘what had they wished to have known sooner’ - answer, that they had known they were attractive to women! They have had a lifelong love of horses and on leaving school had a job at 35 shillings a week looking after them, years later owning and riding them. They met their partner at a riding school. This individual was once asked to say grace before a meal at a very auspicious gathering. They stood up, said the single word ‘grace’ and sat down again. Who else would do that? If you think you know who it is please give the editor a ring. Last month’s ‘Guess Who?’ was Vic Wright. Were you right?
Please be mindful! And, whilst writing about rubbish, a family in the houses running down the hill from The Boot have had to call out Anglian Water twice because sewage has been flooding into their garden because the pipes were blocked. Why were they blocked? Wipes. Yes - wipes being put down the toilet. Just don’t! Just don’t do it. It is common knowledge these things cause problems and just because it isn’t your problem having flushed the loo doesn’t mean it isn’t somebody else’s.
