F E B R U A RY 2022 TA N G I E R “ H O T S A N D S ” Hey, Hey It’s Circus Day Where did it all begin? The date was March 14, 1931, and Tangier Potentate Dan Johnson had an announcement. The headlines in the Omaha World Herald read, “Shrine Plans a Circus in the City Auditorium.” During the week of April 27-May 2, the citizens of Omaha and the surrounding areas would be entertained and amazed by a three-ring circus complete with all the spectacles of the tent circus of by gone days. 30 acts would comprise the program with many of the best and most prominent circus stars from across the country. Among them were Chief Clown, Larry Kohler, who was a featured act with many of the “Big Top” shows of the day. The Rosella Sisters would excite and amaze as they performed daring stunts above the crowd as they hung by their teeth. A troupe of the most accomplished tumblers and leapers from across America and Europe would perform the “tournament of leaps,” an act having been removed from programs during the preceding 22 years due to its daring and danger. As the week concluded and the circus pulled up stakes on May 2, 1931, nearly 35 thousand children and adults had attended the first Tangier Shrine Circus. Tangier Shrine was excited and pleased to announce that the circus had been “the most successful enterprise ever sponsored by Tangier temple.” So successful was the endeavor, it was decided the circus would become an annual affair. On March 5, 1932, Potentate John Poucher announced that John G. Robinson owner of the John G. Robinson circus would produce the second annual Shrine circus at the City Auditorium. General admission and reserve seats would be .50 cents. The Annual Shrine Circus was off and running. Potentates Dan Johnson and John Poucher couldn’t have known it at the time, but they were creating a tradition and legacy that would sustain Tangier Shrine for decades to come. Nearly 91 years later, we continue to excite and amaze the citizens of Omaha and surrounding areas with our Shrine Circus spectacular.
